# GE Vernova won the first US small-reactor permit and fell 3.4%: batteries are undercutting its gas backlog

> GE Vernova won America's first small-reactor construction permit on Tuesday and the stock fell anyway. The same week, Wood Mackenzie put numbers on why: batteries now undercut the gas peakers that fill the turbine backlog GEV sells at scarcity prices.

[GE Vernova](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/ge-vernova) [won the first small-reactor construction permit in US history](https://www.foreignpolicyjournal.com/2026/10/07/ge-vernova-nyse-gev-beats-nuscale-nyse-smr-to-construction-permit-as-tvas-bwrx-300-reactor-gets-federal-approval/) on October 7, and [the stock fell 3.42% to $994 the same day](https://www.tradingview.com/news/gurufocus:c19f97291094b:0-ge-vernova-stocks-sink-3-4-despite-first-u-s-small-reactor-permit/) [1]. The NRC cleared TVA's BWRX-300 at Clinch River in 14 months, four months ahead of schedule, while rival NuScale sits near $8, down about 86% from its $57.42 peak, with a UBS sell rating and no firm customer commitments [2]. Regulatory risk is not the market's worry. It is the price of GEV's other product: gas turbines.

## The crossover the backlog cannot outrun

Wood Mackenzie [published an analysis on October 8](https://finance.yahoo.com/energy/articles/4-hour-storage-cheaper-gas-140437011.html) finding four-hour battery storage 65% to 75% cheaper than new open-cycle gas peakers in the US for a 2026 commercial operation date, depending on carbon pricing [3]. Gas turbine prices are projected to hit $600/kW by the end of 2027, a 195% rise since 2019, and [GE Vernova](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001996810), Siemens Energy and Mitsubishi Power hold backlogs of 35 GW to 116 GW [3]. WoodMac calls North American gas generation "a supply deficit cycle through the late 2030s," driven by data-center load growth [3].

Read those two facts together and the tension is clear. The shortage that lets turbine makers charge scarcity prices is caused by demand that batteries, which keep getting cheaper, can increasingly serve instead. WoodMac's Ahmed Jameel Abdullah calls the shift "decisive and widening" [3]. Solar is already the lowest-cost new-build technology in 43 of 48 modeled markets, and four-hour storage is forecast to fall 33% to $80/MWh in the Middle East and Africa by 2035, displacing gas peaking on cost across every gas market there [3].

## What the backlog is worth at the top

[The backlog is real money](https://theinference.org/article/who-stands-on-the-other-side-of-ge-vernova-s-176-billion-backlog), but it is booked. GEV's revenue has climbed steadily, from $8.2B in Q2 2024 to $11.1B in Q2 2026, with growth accelerating to nearly 22% year over year in the latest quarter [4]. The question is whether the marginal megawatt after the queue clears gets priced at $600/kW or matched against a battery at a 65% discount. If utilities keep locking in turbines while storage costs keep falling, today's pricing looks like a peak, and the equity is paying for backlog written at the top of the cycle [3].

The SMR permit is a genuine option on the nuclear leg. But the near-term value sits in gas turbines sold into a demand wave that storage is learning to undercut. That is the repricing the market started on October 7.

*Chart: **GEV revenue has grown through 2026 as the turbine backlog fills** Column chart of GEV quarterly revenue from Q1 2024 to Q2 2026, rising from 7.3 to 11.1 billion dollars*

*GE Vernova quarterly revenue, US$ billions, from its SEC filings, retrieved October 9, 2026. [4]*

## What could not be verified

The editor's brief cited a DTE plan committing 2.2 GW of new gas into a 474 GW queue. No filing or coverage of that figure could be reached this run, so it is not used here. The structural question stands without it: buyers now have a priced alternative, and the scarcity premium has a clock on it.

## Takeaway

The market's doubt about GE Vernova is not regulatory risk but peak-cycle pricing: the same data-center demand that fills its gas turbine backlog is the demand batteries are now cheaper than peakers to serve.
