# Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase had to lift Volta's $5 billion AI loan yield past 11% to sell it

> The banks had to lift an unrated $5 billion AI loan's yield to roughly 11.2 to 11.75 percent and add protections before buyers would take it, while Goldman's own credit provision tripled the same quarter.

[JPMorgan Chase](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/jpmorgan-chase) and [Goldman Sachs](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/goldman-sachs) relaunched a $5 billion leveraged loan for Volta Infrastructure Holdings, a neocloud founded this year by two ex-Brookfield executives, because investors would not bite at the first number [1]. On October 15 the loan [sold at 6.5 percentage points over the benchmark rate and 95 cents on the dollar](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/options/articles/jpmorgan-goldman-boost-yield-volta-232556640.html), pushing yields past 11%, among the highest ever paid to finance the AI buildout [1].

The exact range comes out at roughly 11.21% to 11.75% [4]. The money funds a Norwegian data center run with Bitcoin miner Bitdeer and about 36,000 [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) chips [1][4].

## The coupon is now the story

The financing splits into a $1.3 billion first-lien term loan the banks underwrote outright, and a $3.7 billion chip loan sold on a best-efforts basis, banker language for "we will try" [4]. The banks committed their balance sheet to the smaller, senior slice and nothing but effort to the larger one, which says where they think the risk sits.

The loan is unrated, which keeps collateralized loan obligation managers, the biggest buyers of leveraged paper, out of the bid [1]. Lenders also demanded a two-year non-call and a rate step-down pegged to [Anthropic](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/anthropic), the customer whose six-year compute agreement is the revenue stream the whole structure leans on [1][4]. Volta has no rating of its own, and the step-down only triggers if Anthropic itself earns an investment-grade rating, so the 11% coupon prices both the borrower and its dependence on one customer [4].

## The arranger's own books show the strain

Goldman's [Form 8-K of October 13](https://www.algovestiq.com/news/earnings/gs-goldman-sachs-q3-fy2026-earnings), three days before the repricing, is the other side of the trade [3]. Loans grew 6% in the quarter to $276 billion, while the provision for credit losses jumped to $368 million from $102 million in the second quarter on wholesale-loan impairments [3]. The fee lines keep printing: record equities financing revenue of $3.37 billion, equity underwriting up 43% to $666 million, debt underwriting at $904 million [3].

*Chart: **Goldman's credit provision more than tripled in one quarter** Column chart of Goldman Sachs quarterly provision for credit losses: $339 million in Q3 2025, $102 million in Q2 2026, $368 million in Q3 2026.*

*Goldman Sachs provision for credit losses, quarterly, US$ millions, per Form 8-K filings; Q3 2025 of $339M a year earlier, Q2 2026 of $102M, Q3 2026 of $368M [3]*

## Every 25 basis points is real money

The coupon floats off SOFR, the benchmark rate much of US lending prices off [4]. Goldman's chief economist Jan Hatzius [expects one more Fed hike in December](https://www.thestreet.com/investing/goldman-sachs-fed-rate-hike-outlook); [Morgan Stanley](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/morgan-stanley)'s economists see two, December and March [6]. Each quarter-point adds roughly $12.5 million a year to a $5 billion floating loan [6]. The cost of the AI buildout is now partly a monetary-policy variable.

## The market is already pricing the downside

[CoreWeave](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/coreweave), the listed neocloud next door, saw [junk-bond yields top 15% this week](https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/coreweave-shares-tumble-as-bond-yields-near-15-on-concern-about-ai-borrowing-binge/ar-AA2efaJF), with credit risk at an all-time high, and its shares fell 15.5% in a session [1][5]. [Oracle](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/oracle) and other debt-heavy tech names caught the same sell-off [5].

The bullish counterpoint is real: CoreWeave's management says its backlog "more than supports all of our debt obligations", and Anthropic's revenue is climbing fast enough to service a six-year contract [5]. But Volta's debt has no credit rating of its own and its cash flows hinge on a single customer, and 11.21% to 11.75% is what lenders charge when the paperwork cannot answer for either [4].

## What decides it

Watch whether the $3.7 billion best-efforts chip loan fully sells at the new terms; that is the cleanest read on real appetite for unrated AI debt [4]. The underwritten $1.3 billion first-lien piece clears regardless [4]. The fee is paid whether the credit works; the loan book and the provision line are where it does not. Own the fee pools, not the credit. More on the credit side in our earlier piece on [insurers buying Meta-tied CoreWeave debt](https://theinference.org/article/insurers-bought-740-million-of-meta-tied-coreweave-debt-as-credit-markets-price-a-60-default) [a].

## Takeaway

When an unrated AI borrower's paper needs double-digit yields, protection against a single customer and a best-efforts tranche, the credit is telling the truth the fee lines skip.
