# Google built the top-ranked AI model and the market still erased $500 billion in a day

> DeepMind's Gemini 4 Carbon took the No. 1 benchmark score by a single point, but only a handful of cybersecurity defenders can use it and a rival's users are waiting on tokens. The same week, Alphabet's cash flow went negative again and the dip went unfilled.

## One point ahead, one day too early

[Google DeepMind](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/google-deepmind) released [Gemini 4 Carbon](https://theinference.org/article/deepmind-says-coordination-beats-benchmarks-while-alphabet-posts-negative-9-07-billion-free-cash-flow) on October 28, the same day [Alphabet](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/alphabet) printed third-quarter results, and the independent evaluator Artificial Analysis [scored it 59 on its Intelligence Index v5.0](https://cryptobriefing.com/google-gemini-4-carbon-tops-ai-index/): one point ahead of [Anthropic](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/anthropic)'s Claude Opus 5.5 at 58, two ahead of [OpenAI](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/openai)'s GPT-6 Astra at 57, and nine ahead of Google's own previous flagship, Gemini 4 Argon [1][2].

The applause lasted one trading day. On October 29 Alphabet's stock [had its worst day in its history as a public company](https://www.morningstar.com/markets/markets-brief-alphabet-stocks-worst-day-history-signs-strain-across-ai-trade), falling more than 12% and erasing about $500 billion of market value [3].

## The model almost nobody can use

Capability is not the lab's constraint any more; serving it is. Google is granting initial access only to selected cybersecurity defenders [through its Fairwind Program](https://venturebeat.com/technology/google-unveils-gemini-4-carbon-retaking-the-worlds-no-1-spot-on-updated-harder-benchmarks-but-access-is-limited), and Artificial Analysis marks Carbon as lacking a publicly available API [1][2].

[Perplexity](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/perplexity) chief executive Aravind Srinivas [called Carbon the strongest model he has seen for long-form research and answer quality](https://chenqiyuan.cn/article/intel-3922585ef342822ae76fb9d6), a new state of the art on the WANDR benchmark, and said it reaches his Pro and Max users only once Perplexity has enough token capacity [4]. FUNDA's tracker reaches the same verdict: [Carbon leads the updated index "by a narrow margin" and "access remains limited"](https://fundaai.substack.com/p/weeklyanthropic-s-1-csp-capex-and) [5].

The announcement still drew a crowd. [A r/singularity thread on the release](https://old.reddit.com/r/singularity/comments/1xhtwjm/gemini_4_carbon/) collected 1,580 upvotes [6].

## The same AI sits on both sides of the ledger

Inside Google Cloud, AI prints money: [revenue grew about 103% to $30.7 billion, past the $28.7 billion analysts expected](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/28/alphabet-googl-earnings-q3-2026.html) [7]. Inside Search, AI eats the bill: revenue grew 12% to $63.35 billion and missed [7].

Chief business officer [Philipp Schindler](https://theinference.org/markets/people/philipp-schindler) told analysts the surge in AI Mode queries "had an impact because of the lower monetization we're seeing in AI Mode" [3]. Capital spending more than doubled year over year to $51.36 billion, free cash flow came in at negative $9.07 billion, a second straight negative quarter and a first for the company, and long-term debt now stands at $125.1 billion against $21.6 billion a year ago [7][3][8].

*Chart: **Capex quadrupled in nine quarters as free cash flow flipped negative** Line chart of Alphabet's quarterly capital expenditure rising from $13.2 billion in Q2 2024 to $51.4 billion in Q3 2026 while free cash flow turns negative, reaching negative $9.1 billion in Q3 2026.*

## The dip nobody bought

The usual buyer of an AI selloff sat this one out. [Goldman Sachs](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/goldman-sachs) analysts find US retail trading volumes down 20% since the summer and 45% since late 2025, as households hit the brakes [3]. So the post-earnings dip went unfilled. Alphabet closed at $279.84 on October 30 and traded near $283.51 pre-market on November 2 [9].

## The number that settles it in January

Finance chief [Anat Ashkenazi](https://theinference.org/markets/people/anat-ashkenazi) told analysts capex will "increase significantly in 2027", with details promised on the fourth-quarter call [7], and [Jefferies](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/jefferies) expects free cash flow to stay negative through 2028 [3]. The negative cash quarter itself was already on the record [in these pages on October 30](https://theinference.org/article/deepmind-says-coordination-beats-benchmarks-while-alphabet-posts-negative-9-07-billion-free-cash-flow); what is new since is the benchmark lead, the token rationing and the empty bid [7][3].

The wider tape adds pressure this week, [with 2,465 companies reporting and Apple on a rare Monday slot](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/q3-earnings-back-track-being-125609250.html) [10]. Watch January: the 2027 capex guide decides whether the best model on the leaderboard can pay its own bills [10].

## Takeaway

Google now holds the top benchmark spot with Gemini 4 Carbon, but the model ships with no public API and token rationing, while Alphabet's Q3 printed doubled capex of $51.36B and negative free cash flow of $9.07B. The January 2027 capex guide settles whether the best model can pay its own bills.
