# Google DeepMind's Genie 4 ships unpriced, and the last launch cost Unity 24% in a day

> DeepMind's new world model fixes the gaps Unity's CEO cited in January, yet ships as an unpriced research preview, so the milestone that would actually reprice the game engine trade is still ahead.

[Google DeepMind](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/google-deepmind) [announced Genie 4 on October 27](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/27/googles-genie-4-world-model-adds-audio-more-realistic-worlds-and-real-time-steering/), a world model that generates playable 3D environments frame by frame in real time, now with native music, ambient sound and dialogue, plus characters that can be steered mid-scene by typing a prompt [3][4]. It ships first as a research preview to trusted testers, with access to follow for Google AI Ultra subscribers through Project Genie and for developers through the Gemini API [3][4].

There is no public date and no developer price. That unpriced gap is the story for gaming investors: the January-sized trigger for [Unity](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001810806)'s shares has not arrived yet [3][4].

## The last launch cost Unity a quarter of its value in a day

When the consumer version of Genie 3, [Google](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/alphabet) DeepMind's previous world model released in August 2025 at 720p and 24 frames per second, reached AI Ultra subscribers through Project Genie on January 29, 2026, investors sold first and asked later [2][4]. [Unity, the game engine company, fell](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/unity) as much as 24% in one session [2]. [Roblox](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/roblox) dropped between 12.8% and 13%, [Take-Two Interactive](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/take-two-interactive) lost between 8% and 10.5%, CD Projekt fell 8.9% and Nintendo 4.79% [2].

*Chart: **Project Genie's January launch cut Unity hardest, as much as 24% in one session** Range chart of the one-day percentage declines of five gaming stocks after the January 2026 Project Genie launch, showing each reported range from its low to its high endpoint, Unity's range largest at 22.5 to 24 percent*

Unity's CEO Matthew Bromberg pushed back within days: the frames are probabilistic, so nobody, player or developer, knows what happens next, which makes the output unsuitable on its own for games needing consistent, repeatable experiences. mBank analyst Piotr Poniatowski called the sell-off unjustified, and Unity, Roblox and Take-Two each clawed back at least 3% of the loss by the following Monday [2].

## Genie 4 aims at exactly the gaps the skeptics named

Genie 4 holds a consistent scene for up to two minutes, double Genie 3's one-minute cap, with better physics for aerodynamics and collisions and more natural characters [3][4]. Gemini 3.8 Flash, a fast Google AI model, acts as the director, breaking down goals and checking each generated frame to keep the world on track [3][4]. It is still rationed: [consumer access sits behind AI Ultra plans starting at $100 a month](https://startupfortune.com/google-deepmind-unveils-genie-4-the-world-model-that-once-tanked-gaming-stocks/), and details still drift as simulations run [2][4].

*Chart: **Unity revenue has grown for six straight quarters to $546M** Column chart of Unity quarterly revenue from Q3 2024 to Q2 2026, rising from $446.5M to $546.5M*

Unity, for context, is not a company bleeding out: [revenue grew 23.9% year over year in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, to $546.5M](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001810806), and the operating margin turned less negative at -5.9% [5].

## The trigger to watch is a date and a price

The January verdict stands for now. World models remain premium, compute-hungry demos, not shippable game engines. What would change that verdict is a dated Genie 4 public release and a per-use API price, and neither exists [3][4]. Size the trade on those milestones, not on demo days.

## Takeaway

Genie 4 closes the consistency gaps Unity's CEO cited in January, but with no release date and no API price, the trigger that cut Unity 24% in a day is still ahead.
