# HPE's CEO says zero exposure to the AI financing web; his stock, his inventory and his insiders say otherwise

> HPE's chief executive told Fortune his company has no stake in the circular AI financing web, days after a 7.1% one-day drop. The filings show a boom that is real, a valuation that is stretched, and an insider base that only sells.

[Hewlett Packard Enterprise](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/hewlett-packard-enterprise) chief executive Antonio Neri picked a bad week to say his company stands outside the AI money machine. "We have [zero exposure to that financing architecture](https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/executive-leadership-and-management/hpe-s-ceo-says-he-has-zero-exposure-to-ai-s-financing-web/ar-AA2gFyeq) that people are concerned about," Neri told Fortune's Diane Brady in Miami on November 3, 2026, referring to the circular equity, funding and supply deals linking chipmakers, hyperscalers, AI labs and cloud providers [5].

The market had already voted the day before: HPE fell 7.1% on November 2 to close at $51.19, part of a server-builder selloff that also took [Super Micro](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/super-micro) down 6.53% and Dell down 7.34% [2][3]. Neri's claim is now the test investors hold through HPE's [fiscal fourth-quarter earnings, confirmed for November 23](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/hpe-present-live-audio-webcast-124500856.html) [4].

## The CEO says HPE sells the shovels, not the debt

Neri's argument has a real core. HPE, the enterprise IT company spun off from [HP](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/hp) in 2015, sells servers and networking hardware to customers rather than lending them money to buy it, and he says it chose early "where not to go" in the cycle [5]. The growth in its filings is not fiction: [quarterly revenue ran from $7.6 billion in the spring of 2025 to $12.2 billion in the quarter ended July 31, 2026](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001645590), with gross margin climbing from about 30% to 41% over the same stretch [6].

## The tape and the sellers disagree

But "zero exposure" answers a question the market is not asking. The worry on the tape is not that HPE funds AI labs directly; it is what HPE paid to sit on the paying side of a memory shortage. [Our October 31 report](https://theinference.com/article/hewlett-packard-enterprise-fell-6-42-after-intel-s-memory-warning-with-11-8-billion-of-inventory) put HPE's inventory at $11.8 billion after [Intel](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/intel)'s memory warning, a sum that turns into writedowns, not revenue, if demand or component prices turn [7].

Meanwhile the stock's run has outrun its numbers: HPE trades at [26.7 times trailing earnings against a five-year median of 13.9x](https://www.gurufocus.com/news/9163487/a-look-at-hewlett-packard-enterprise-co-hpe-after-71-decline-gf-value-2882-vs-price-5119), and GuruFocus's fundamentals-based GF Value pegs fair value at $28.82, 77.6% below Tuesday's close [2]. Insiders sold $73.1 million of stock over the past twelve months with no buying reported [2].

## What to watch on November 23

Neri could yet be vindicated in the useful sense: HPE may genuinely carry none of the circular vendor-financing risk that haunts [Super Micro's neocloud order book](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/super-micros-ai-boom-faces-160947744.html), where KeyBanc wants proof expansion can be funded internally without dilution or borrowing [3]. The company itself, through its earnings call scheduled for 5:00 p.m [4]. ET on November 23, will show whether AI server orders convert to cash or pile up as receivables and inventory [4].

Note plainly what the record does not show: no source establishes that HPE takes equity stakes, vendor financing or supply prepayments from AI customers, so Neri's "zero exposure" is an unverified characterization of his own book, not a filed fact. The receipts that are filed, inventory and insider selling, both point the other way. When the landlord says the building is fine, count the fire exits.

## Takeaway

Antonio Neri's zero-exposure claim is testable on November 23: the filings show real growth, but a stretched valuation, $11.8 billion of inventory and $73.1 million of insider selling point the other way.
