# HubSpot cuts nearly 660 jobs, 7% of staff, as Barclays dates its AI payoff to late 2027

> HubSpot is cutting nearly 660 jobs, 7% of its staff, to reorganize around AI, and its chief executive says the move is neither AI efficiency nor cost-cutting. Six days later, Barclays dated HubSpot's AI payoff to late 2027 and cut the stock to its neutral rating.

## 660 people out and a 28-word goodbye

[HubSpot](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/hubspot) (NYSE: HUBS), the Cambridge, Massachusetts sales-and-marketing software company, told staff on October 6 that nearly 660 of them, about 7% of its workforce, were leaving, [under a plan the board approved on October 1](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1404655/000119312526414965/d183135d8k.htm) [1]. The shares closed at $220.61 on October 5, down about 45% this year, and the September-quarter report, the first scheduled look at the business since the cut, is weeks away [2]. HubSpot cut the same 7% share, about 500 jobs, in January 2023 [3].

Founder and chief technology officer Dharmesh Shah marked the day with a 28-word LinkedIn post: "My personal thanks to all of the people that HubSpot parted ways with today. You helped make HubSpot the company it is. Best wishes with the next chapter." [4] Readers called it cold and impersonal; [he apologized for it on October 12](https://www.bizjournals.com/boston/news/2026/10/12/hubspot-cto-linkedin-post.html) [5].

## The CEO's denial meets the bank's calendar

Chief executive [Yamini Rangan's staff memo](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1404655/000119312526414965/d183135dex991.htm), attached to the company's SEC filing, says HubSpot has "shifted our strategy from building software that helps customers grow to delivering outcomes for them with AI," and insists the cut is "not driven by AI-related efficiencies" nor "simply a cost-cutting exercise" [6]. Departing staff get 20 weeks of base pay plus a week per year of service, up to 30 weeks [6].

The bill runs $65–75 million, mostly booked in the fourth quarter, with the cash out by June 30, 2027, and excluded from the non-GAAP results that carry HubSpot's guidance [1]. Six days after the memo, Barclays analyst Raimo Lenschow [cut the stock to Equal-Weight](https://www.tradingview.com/news/seekingalpha:8c2a0c4d3094b:0-hubspot-and-monday-com-downgraded-by-barclays-on-ai-concerns/), the bank's neutral rating, from Overweight, its buy rating, and called HubSpot's AI benefit "more like a 2H27 story," meaning the second half of 2027 [7].

## Five-month sales cycles, twenty percent growth

His checks put HubSpot deal cycles at about five months, against four to six weeks previously [7]. He expects net new annual recurring revenue to run below constant-currency revenue growth this year, and net revenue retention, the year-over-year spend of existing customers, to stay roughly flat [7]. The same note cut rival software maker [monday.com](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/monday-com), where AI is already 17% of net-new recurring revenue but roughly 1% of the total [7]. Shares slipped 2.51% on October 12, the downgrade day [8]. The reported top line, though, has not cracked: revenue grew 19.8% in the June quarter, and growth has held between roughly 16% and 26% for twelve quarters [9].

*Chart: **Revenue growth has held between roughly 16 and 26 percent for 12 straight quarters** Column chart of HubSpot's year-over-year revenue growth for each quarter from Q3 2023 to Q2 2026, ranging from 15.7 to 25.6 percent.*

*Year-over-year revenue growth per quarter, GAAP revenue, from HubSpot's SEC filings. [9]*

## The numbers that decide it

HubSpot reaffirmed third-quarter guidance of $924–925 million in revenue and $3.25–3.27 in earnings per share, on the non-GAAP basis that excludes the restructuring charges, and still backs the margin targets from its September 17 analyst day [1][10]. Barclays stays constructive on the long-term AI opportunity; the debate "is now about timing rather than direction" [7]. The September-quarter report, weeks away, is the next scheduled reading, and the lines to watch are the two Lenschow named: net-new recurring revenue and net revenue retention. The 660 paid in October. The evidence is due within weeks. The AI revenue, on the bank's calendar, arrives in 2027.

## Takeaway

HubSpot's 660-person cut and its chief executive's denial of cost-cutting now sit against Barclays' call that the AI payoff is a late-2027 story, with twelve quarters of roughly 16-26% revenue growth as the evidence still to be tested by the September-quarter report.
