# HubSpot says AI answers took 80% of its blog traffic; November 4 prices the replacement

> CMO Kipp Bodnar says the blog peaked above 20 million organic visits a month and lost about 80% of it to AI answers while revenue kept climbing. The November 4 report has to show the credits meter can replace the free traffic engine.

## The blog that built HubSpot is gone

Kipp Bodnar, [HubSpot](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/hubspot)'s chief marketing officer, has put a number on what AI answers did to the company that coined inbound marketing. The HubSpot blog peaked above 20 million organic visits a month, he [told Search Engine Journal](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/hubspot-lost-80-of-its-traffic-cmo-kipp-bodnar-explains-why-revenue-kept-growing/594004/), and has lost about 80% of that traffic as buyers ask ChatGPT or Claude instead of searching [1].

When Google switched on AI Overviews, its machine-written answer boxes, HubSpot lost nearly 5 million visits in one 30-day stretch [1]. The 2009 playbook from co-founders [Brian Halligan](https://theinference.org/markets/people/brian-halligan) and [Dharmesh Shah](https://theinference.org/markets/people/dharmesh-shah) was literally subtitled "Get Found Using [Google](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/alphabet)" [1].

## Revenue held anyway

Traffic collapsed; the money kept coming. Revenue grew nearly 20% in 2025, Bodnar said, and [reached $911.7 million in the second quarter of 2026](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/hubspot-hubs-q2-2026-earnings-003002854.html), up 20% as reported [1][5]. About 90% of HubSpot's content leads now come from channels that barely existed in its mix five years ago, a newsletter it bought plus podcasts and video [1].

Visitors arriving from AI answers convert at roughly three times the rate of traditional search, and qualified AI leads grew 1,850% from Q1 2025 to Q1 2026, off a base Bodnar admits is small and attribution he calls imperfect [1].

*Chart: **Revenue rose every quarter for three years while the blog lost 80% of its traffic** Column chart of HubSpot quarterly revenue from Q3 2023 to Q2 2026, rising from about $557.6 million to $911.7 million.*

*HubSpot quarterly revenue in USD millions as reported in SEC filings, Q3 2023 through Q2 2026; the traffic-loss figure is the CMO's October 2026 statement. [8]*

## November 4 prices the replacement

[The November 4 report](https://www.stocktitan.net/news/HUBS/), after the close, is where the replacement gets valued [2][7]. Net revenue retention, the share of existing-customer revenue that sticks and grows, ran at 102% in Q2 and is guided roughly flat for 2026 [5].

[Bank of America](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/bank-of-america), [rating the shares underperform](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/hubspot-faces-narrower-growth-beat-172000994.html), says retention must reach 103% to avoid another guidance cut, and expects constant-currency growth to beat its guide by just 1.4 points against a usual two or more [2].

Its channel checks put initial contract values under platform plus credits, which charges for access and metered AI use and is now rolling out to new EMEA customers, at 10 to 30% lower [2]. [Free-tier email sends were cut 85% days before the print](https://www.theinference.com/article/hubspot-cut-free-email-sends-85-and-moved-starter-onto-credits-12-days-before-earnings), The Inference reported on October 29 [9].

## Holders left before the answer

The org chart sits awkwardly beside the story. HubSpot cut about 660 jobs, 7% of its workforce, on October 6; Chief Executive [Yamini Rangan](https://theinference.org/markets/people/yamini-rangan)'s [memo called it reorganization](https://www.fastcompany.com/91619102/hubspot-layoffs-today-jobs-slashed-stock-struggles-why), "not driven by AI-related efficiencies" [1][6]. [Halligan sold 8,500 shares for $2.04 million](https://www.marketbeat.com/instant-alerts/filing-motley-fool-asset-management-llc-sells-7456-shares-of-hubspot-inc-hubs-2026-10-30/) on October 20, insiders sold $6.2 million over 90 days, and Motley Fool's fund arm cut its stake 79.2% [3]. The stock closed October 29 at $239.57, down 3.78% on the day and up 23% on the month, against a Hold consensus and a $272.13 average target [4][2][3].

Wednesday turns on two lines: retention against the 103% bar, and the first contracts signed under credits [5][7]. HubSpot already sells the shift back, with an AEO product that grades how brands appear in AI answers [5] and a September [OpenAI](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/openai) deal putting ChatGPT ads inside its CRM [7]. The blog was the free front door; the credits meter is the turnstile.

## Takeaway

HubSpot's blog lost about 80% of a peak above 20 million monthly visits to AI answers, yet revenue still grew 20%; the November 4 report has to show retention above the 103% bar and early credits contracts to prove the meter can replace the free front door.
