# Humaans, with $20 million raised, launches US payroll against ADP and its own partners

> The London workforce-software firm starts running US payroll itself this autumn, with first customers live within weeks. A startup with $20M in lifetime funding is entering a market where four incumbent payroll processors book $32B a year.

Since its founding in 2020, [Humaans](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/humaans) did everything around payroll except run it. [7] The London company kept the record of who was hired, promoted, moved state or given a raise, and left the payments to outside engines. [On August 23 it said it will keep the money movement too](https://humaans.io/blog/humaans-is-coming-to-us-payroll): Humaans Payroll for the United States begins rolling out to its first customers this autumn, now underway, with the first go-lives due within weeks. [1][2]

The scope is concrete: all 50 states plus Washington DC, W-2 employees and 1099 contractors, the two US worker tax classes, and pay cycles from weekly to annual, with tax calculations, payments and filings built in. [2] A promotion or a relocation flows from the workforce record straight into the pay run, carrying its approvals and effective dates. [2] "Everything required to pay someone correctly is the consequence of events the system of record already owns," said chief executive and co-founder Giovanni Luperti. [1][2]

## A $20M company against $32B of payroll processors

Humaans has raised $20M in total, from backers including Y Combinator, the startup accelerator, Lachy Groom, Exor, Moonfire and Frontline Ventures. [7][2] The market it has just entered works at a different scale: [ADP](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/automatic-data-processing), the largest US payroll processor, [closed fiscal 2026 on June 30 with $21.9B of revenue](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0000008670), up 6.7%, and [Paychex](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0000723531) took $6.5B in the year to May 31, up 16.9%. [8][9]

*Chart: **ADP books Humaans' $20M lifetime funding about every eight hours** Bar chart of latest fiscal-year revenue: ADP $21.9B, Paychex $6.5B, Paycom $2.1B, Paylocity $1.8B, against which Humaans has raised $20M in total funding*

*Latest full fiscal-year revenue of four US payroll processors: ADP and Paylocity to June 30, 2026, Paychex to May 31, 2026, Paycom to December 31, 2025, per SEC filings. Humaans' $20M is total funding raised, per its company site. [7][8][9][10][11]*

## The partner list is the target list

[Humaans' own integration directory](https://humaans.io/integrations) still lists Remote, Oyster, Multiplier and Papaya Global under payroll, alongside smaller names like Symmetrical and PayCaptain. [6] The announcement says customers outside the US will keep paying through that ecosystem of local and global payroll providers. [2]

Inside the US, those partners become competitors. The bet separating this from another payroll launch is AI: payroll gives Athena, Humaans' agentic AI platform, an execution layer where its agents act on the financial consequences of workforce changes instead of logging them. [2][4] [A October 1 update](https://humaans.io/blog/computed-compensation-20x-ai-companion-engagement-insights-via-mcp-and-much-more) shipped formula-based Computed Compensation and an AI Companion the company calls 20 times more powerful; the platform menu already lists a Preliminary payroll module. [5][3] No independent coverage has appeared; StreetInsider flags that its staff did not create [the release it ran](https://www.streetinsider.com/Press+Releases/Humaans+Expands+Into+US+Payroll+As+It+Accelerates+US+Growth/26963138.html). [2]

## The moat is decades of tax filings

The countercase is the incumbents' health. ADP and Paychex both grew through the fiscal years they just closed, and multi-state tax compliance is a moat built one filing season at a time. [8][9] Humaans brings no US payroll track record, and its case rests on [self-reported site metrics](https://humaans.io/): 75% less admin work, 80% of employee questions answered instantly. [2][3][4]

*Chart: **Every incumbent has grown revenue each year since fiscal 2021** Line chart of annual revenue for ADP, Paychex, Paycom and Paylocity from fiscal 2021 to fiscal 2026, all four rising every year: ADP from $15.0B to $21.9B, Paychex from $4.1B to $6.5B, Paycom from $1.1B to $2.1B and Paylocity from $0.6B to $1.8B.*

*Annual revenue in billions of US dollars, by fiscal year as labelled: ADP and Paylocity end June 30, Paychex May 31, Paycom December 31, so its fiscal 2026 had not closed at publication. Source: the companies' SEC filings, retrieved 12 October 2026. [8][9][10][11]*

Watch three things this quarter: the first customer go-lives due within weeks [2], whether the payroll category survives on Humaans' own integrations page [6], and whether Athena's agents close a pay run untouched. [4] Either the filings clear on a first customer's first payday, or payroll joins the list of software categories that looked easier from London.

## Takeaway

A $20M London HRIS startup is running US payroll itself from this autumn, turning its own integration partners into competitors and betting its AI agents can execute a pay run, against incumbents led by ADP at $21.9B of revenue that have grown every year.
