# Intel's $2 Billion ASIC Boom Is Product Money, Not Foundry Money

> Intel hired Marvell's sales chief to sell custom chips, and an analyst roadmap now names Amazon, Google and Nvidia as potential customers of its factories. Intel's own filing says outsiders paid those factories just $293 million last quarter.

## The wishlist is a projection, not an order book

Dean Jarnac arrives from [Marvell](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/marvell), a chip designer that runs no factories of its own [8], after senior sales roles at [Broadcom](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/broadcom) and [AMD](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amd) [1]. [Intel](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/intel) announced him on August 7, 2026, as executive vice president and chief sales officer, reporting directly to chief executive Lip-Bu Tan, with ASICs named in his remit [1]; he is the second outsider handed Intel's sales organization in five years [2], a bet on custom silicon [3].

His first month brought a wishlist: [a roadmap attributed to analyst Jeff Pu, published October 9](https://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-s-foundry-ambitions-could-get-a-massive-boost-from-Nvidia-Google-and-Amazon.1420202.0.html), names [Amazon](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amazon), Google, [Qualcomm](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/qualcomm), [Microsoft](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/microsoft) and [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) as potential users of Intel's packaging and fabs between 2027 and 2029, with Amazon's Trainium 3 possibly first, in the first half of 2027 [4]. It is an analyst projection, not an official customer list [4].

## The announcements name no node and no volume date

Intel shares have more than tripled in a year on the turnaround [5], and headlines read the Pu list as foundry revenue arriving [4]. The announcements underneath are narrower.

The April 9 Google deal covers joint development of ASIC-based IPUs, infrastructure chips, not AI accelerators [6]. The July 21 [Fortinet](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/fortinet) deal spans design, packaging and manufacturing of a security processor [6]. Neither states a process node or a volume-production date [6]. The only node on record came from an Intel representative: the SP6, [the first named foundry customer of the Tan era](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/21/intel-foundry-lands-fortinet-as-first-customer-for-security-chips.html), runs on Intel 4, older technology than 18A and 14A [7].

## A design win is not a wafer order

Marvell's latest quarterly report explains the gap between those two books. [TSMC](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/tsmc) is Marvell's sole source foundry for advanced-node wafers, and its chips are typically designed for one process at one factory, making a later move difficult [8]. The custom-chip model runs on engineering payments made by milestone, and margins sink if customers underpay or volumes fall short [8]. Intel can put its own factories in the same pitch. Nothing obliges a customer to take them.

## The ASIC boom books as product revenue

Zinsner told the July 23 earnings call the ASIC business is approaching $2 billion in annualized revenue, headed for $4 billion with no deadline [6]. That is product money. Intel's own filing books ASIC demand in Data Center and AI product revenue, up $304 million to $951 million in the quarter, primarily on purpose-built silicon [9].

What outsiders paid the factories, [the foundry's external line](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/50863/000005086326000157/intc-20260627.htm), was $293 million of $5,765 million in segment revenue, up from $22 million a year earlier, mostly because [Altera, deconsolidated in September 2025, became an outside customer](https://theinference.org/article/intel-s-foundry-growth-runs-through-altera-a-customer-it-sold-and-still-partly-owns) [9]. The filing says substantially all foundry business supports internal manufacturing; the segment lost $2.1 billion [9].

*Chart: **Intel's factories still sell almost entirely to Intel** Bar chart of three Intel revenue figures for Q2 2026: about $5.5 billion of foundry intersegment revenue sold to Intel itself, an estimated $500 million quarterly equivalent of the custom ASIC run-rate, and $293 million of foundry revenue from outside customers.*

*Q2 2026, in millions of US dollars. The internal and external bars are stated figures from Intel's Form 10-Q filed July 24, 2026: intersegment revenue and external-customer revenue. The ASIC bar is the quarterly equivalent of CFO David Zinsner's approaching-$2-billion annualized run-rate as reported by CRN, an estimate rather than a reported figure. [9][6]*

## Conviction is not a customer list

The bull case has substance. Zinsner told a September investor conference that external engagements had significantly increased and shifted from technical data to capacity talks, and [said Intel has conviction it will land 14A customers](https://financefeeds.com/intel-foundry-1-million-high-na-wafers-customer-question/), without naming one [5]. Output on 18A ran about 25 percent above target last quarter [10]. But the same filing still has potential significant customers evaluating 14A, and credits the foundry's revenue growth to internal wafer volumes [9].

## Only three disclosures would settle the split

Watch for a named node with a volume date on a leading-edge deal, an external revenue print that is not Altera, or a roadmap name inside an Intel filing. Until one lands, the custom-chip boom is a products-segment story wearing foundry clothes.

## Takeaway

Intel's approaching-$2-billion ASIC business books as Data Center and AI product revenue, not foundry revenue; outsiders paid Intel's factories just $293 million last quarter, and most of that was Altera, a company Intel itself sold.
