# IREN borrowed $363 million against its GPUs as default insurance on Oracle and SpaceX hit records

> Public debt markets are hitting their absorption limit for AI infrastructure, and the same morning IREN showed the workaround: private equipment financing secured by machines already earning.

The credit market that funds AI infrastructure is filling up, and the neoclouds are rerouting around it. Bloomberg reports [double-digit yields on at least 18 junk-rated data-center financings](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-10-28/wall-street-s-ai-debt-machine-is-starting-to-choke-on-supply), record default insurance on [Oracle](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/oracle), [SpaceX](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/spacex), [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) and [Meta](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/meta), and insurers and European banks at their exposure caps [1]. The workarounds are private and asset-backed: [IREN](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/iren), [whose buildout we covered on October 3](https://theinference.org/article/sold-out-through-2026-iren-can-name-14-billion-of-a-30-billion-build), [closed a $363 million equipment financing](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/iren-wingspire-equipment-finance-complete-131700873.html) the same morning [2].

## The whole risk stack is repricing at once

The yields show where the pressure sits. JPMorgan and [Goldman](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/goldman-sachs) had to sweeten [Volta's $5 billion loan, which finances Nvidia GPUs and a Norway data center Anthropic has contracted, past an 11% yield](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/jpmorgan-dangles-11-yield-volta-200522405.html) [3].

Top-rated data-center bonds went from below 5% at the start of 2026 to about 7%, with issuance above 8% described as hard, and investment-grade tech bonds now average about 6% [1]. Hedge costs moved with them: default protection on Oracle, SpaceX, Nvidia and Meta hit records at levels typical of junk-rated borrowers, and Oracle set the tone with a force-majeure notice seeking to defer payments on a delayed New Mexico data center [1].

*Chart: **Data-center debt yields have moved up the whole risk stack** Bars comparing the yield on Volta's $5 billion leveraged loan, the average investment-grade tech bond yield, and top-rated data-center bond yields at the start of 2026 and today.*

*Yields in percent, start of 2026 versus October 28, 2026. Top-rated data-center bonds and investment-grade technology index average per Bloomberg; Volta loan priced above 11% after JPMorgan and Goldman sweetened terms (Bloomberg via Yahoo Finance). [1][3]*

## The buyer of the debt is the bottleneck

The price is the symptom. Investors learned from the Oracle notice that tenant contracts can carry off-ramps, including the right to walk after delays of 180 days or more, and they now demand to be paid for that option [1]. A European bank's technology lending desk says transferring risk off its books takes five months, which stalls new lending, and Citadel Securities warns of a growing disconnect between what Silicon Valley expects to raise and what financiers can deliver [1].

*Chart: **The private deal that slipped through is small** Bars showing IREN's $363 million equipment financing next to Volta's $5 billion syndicated loan and roughly $22 billion of data-center ABS and CMBS issuance this year.*

*US dollars, billions. IREN equipment financing (Business Wire); Volta syndicated loan and year-to-date data-center ABS and CMBS issuance (Bloomberg, Morgan Stanley). [1][2]*

## Where the money still moves

IREN's deal shows the route. Instead of a syndicated bond, it refinanced already-deployed, revenue-generating GPU servers with Wingspire, a [Blue Owl](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/blue-owl) equipment-finance arm, and six lenders led by Eldridge and Silver Point, secured by the equipment and backed by multi-year customer contracts [2]. Liquidity comes from gear already earning, not faith in a buildout. Expect more neoclouds to follow. The watch item: which hyperscaler guarantee prices worst as they do [1][2].

## Takeaway

Junk AI debt now prices past 11%, top data-center bond yields have gone from under 5% to about 7% this year, and default insurance on Oracle, SpaceX, Nvidia and Meta sits at records. IREN's $363 million loan against GPUs already earning shows the private, asset-backed route more neoclouds are expected to take.
