# JPMorgan invests US$ 5 billion in defense startups, and one of them, Castelion, challenges Lockheed's missile

> JPMorgan invested US$ 5 billion of equity in defense and manufacturing startups in the first year of its security and resilience initiative, and one of the disclosed stakes, Castelion, is in the dispute among five companies to build the next long-range missile of the US Army. The number this bet can move is the premium of incumbency (incumbency premium) of the missile makers.

JPMorgan, the largest bank in the United States, allocated US$ 5 billion of its own equity to defense and manufacturing startups in the first year of its security and resilience initiative, half of the ten-year goal, and co-president Doug Petno says the bank may surpass it. [1] The initiative also financed and intermediated US$ 230 billion in transactions; the equity is the part that touches the prices of others. [1]

One of the stakes was chosen by Todd Combs, former [Berkshire Hathaway](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/berkshire-hathaway) portfolio manager who now leads the bank's startup investment arm. It is [Castelion](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/castelion), a missile maker founded at the end of 2022 by former [SpaceX](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/spacex) engineers. [1] In September, [the Army placed Castelion among the five companies that will build prototypes of the fourth increment of its Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) program](https://www.army.mil/article-amp/295791/five_defense_companies_selected_to_develop_precision_strike_missile_increment_4_prototypes), next to [Lockheed Martin](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/lockheed-martin), which produces the missile in service today. [2][3]

## The bank's equity buys factory capacity

Hadrian, the other disclosed holding, builds automated factories for aerospace and defense parts — and a line in California operates ten robots per employee. [1] Castelion raised [a US$ 1 billion round in August, co-led by JPMorgan](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/20/castelion-hits-13b-valuation-to-mass-produce-hypersonic-missiles/). [4] The round valued the company at US$ 13 billion. [4] Since then, the US Navy has moved Blackbeard, its low-cost hypersonic missile, from the prototype stage to [a production order of up to US$ 200 million](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/castelion-moves-blackbeard-production-u-231800325.html). [5]

What the equity buys is factory capacity — the link that decides this competition. Blackbeard was, in the company's words, "projetado desde a origem para produção em ritmo industrial e custo unitário comercial", and cheap production on a large scale is what makes a startup a credible bidder against an established prime contractor. [5] It is an equity bet — and a break with the past for a bank that spun off its private equity arm more than a decade ago. [1]

## Lockheed's franchise opens at both ends

Duas coisas a acompanhar: o fly-off do ano fiscal de 2027 e a dupla posição do banco.

## Takeaway

JPMorgan invested US$ 5 billion of equity in defense and manufacturing startups in the first year of its security and resilience initiative, and its disclosed stake in Castelion places a startup in the dispute among five companies for the next long-range missile of the US Army. The number still in play is the premium of incumbency at Lockheed Martin and RTX.
