# KeyBanc says Apple cut wafer starts worth up to 20 million iPhones before Cirrus Logic's November 4 print

> KeyBanc's Asia trip found Apple cutting wafer starts equal to 15 million to 20 million iPhones, and Cirrus Logic's capacity fix dates to 2029. The stock sits near its 52-week low at 13.2 times earnings against a nine-analyst target of $150.71, and the November 4 report is the first count.

## The pitch arrived in someone else's press release

[GlobalFoundries](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/globalfoundries), a foundry that makes chips other companies design, [said on October 14, 2026](https://gf.com/news-and-events/news/globalfoundries-selected-to-operate-two-new-semiconductor-fabs-in-new-york-under-landmark-us-japan-initiative/), it will operate two new chip fabrication plants in Malta, New York under a U.S.-Japan initiative worth up to $21 billion. [1] Its release quoted [John Forsyth](https://theinference.org/markets/people/john-forsyth), chief executive of [Cirrus Logic](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/cirrus-logic), an Austin, Texas maker of audio and mixed-signal chips, saying the capacity gives Cirrus "access to important domestic manufacturing capability for next-generation mixed-signal products"; the first plant is expected to come online in 2029. [1][5]

The next morning KeyBanc analyst John Vinh [cut Cirrus to Sector Weight](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/keybanc-downgrades-cirrus-logic-asia-115840916.html), roughly a hold, from Overweight, his buy rating, writing that about 80% of revenue rides on [Apple](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/apple). [2]

Apple, he wrote, has cut wafer starts at [TSMC](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/tsmc), the Taiwan foundry building its processors, by an amount equal to 15 million to 20 million iPhones, so "CRUS growth prospects appear limited over the next 6-12 months." [2] A move into PC chips has likely been pushed out by elevated memory prices; the same trip raised his estimates on [Micron](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/micron), [Texas Instruments](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/texas-instruments) and [Analog Devices](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/analog-devices). [2]

The strength he found was in memory and analog chips; the squeeze is in smartphones. [2]

## Scale abandoned, capability bought

On October 1, chipmaker [onsemi](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/onsemi) rewrote its takeover of [Synaptics](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/synaptics), an edge-computing chip designer, into $123 a share in cash, about $5.7 billion, after an unsolicited rival proposal forced new terms. [3] [An 8-K, an SEC current-report filing](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/772406/000077240626000047/crus-20261013.htm), confirmed Cirrus was that bidder, "Party A," and is "not currently pursuing a transaction." [4]

On October 6 it [bought INVENTVM](https://audioxpress.com/news/cirrus-logic-acquires-inventvm-adding-wearable-audio-mems-speaker-and-piezo-technologies), a Pavia, Italy designer of mixed-signal audio and power-management chips founded in 2021, for an undisclosed price. [5][6] Cirrus says the deal will not materially move revenue; what it adds is engineering depth in wearable audio and MEMS speakers. [5]

## The sellout defense

The other camp has Apple's launch. The iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable, [sold out pre-orders in minutes on October 16](https://macdailynews.com/2026/10/16/iphone-duo-pre-orders-command-up-to-5000-on-ebay-as-apple-shipping-slips-into-2027/) at a $1,999 base price; shipping slipped to January 25, 2027, or later, [eBay](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/ebay) resales peaked near $5,000, and Cirrus rose with other Apple suppliers. [7][8] It has beaten 38 of its last 42 earnings estimates and runs a 21% net margin. [9][10]

## The target and the model point in different directions

[Nine analysts keep a $150.71 consensus target](https://www.ad-hoc-news.de/boerse/news/nebenwerte/nine-analysts-set-usd-150-71-target-for-cirrus-logic-stock/70331653), about 40% above a stock near its $105.10 low, at 13.2 times earnings. [10][11] [KeyCorp](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/keycorp), KeyBanc's parent, publishes the model behind the call: its J. Vinh, the same analyst, sees fiscal 2028 earnings of $6.47 a share, below fiscal 2027's $7.09, and carries $2.11 for the quarter reported on November 4 against the street's $2.47. [10][9]

*Chart: **The street's target sits about 40% above a stock on its floor** Bar chart comparing the CRUS 52-week low, its October 16 close, the nine-analyst consensus target and the 52-week high.*

*CRUS share price in USD. Close of October 16, 2026, per FXEmpire; target is the nine-analyst consensus of mid-October; 52-week range per MarketBeat. [9][10][11]*

Resale premiums near $5,000 reflect tight initial supply as much as demand for Apple's first foldable. [7] The target asks for a re-rating the estimates underneath it do not carry.

## Nov 4 counts the wafers

The November 4 report [carries a revenue consensus of $558.37 million](https://www.fxempire.com/stocks/crus/earnings), just under the $560.96 million of a year earlier. [9][12] If the wafer cuts are real, revenue stalls at that line; if the Duo's momentum carries, it clears.

*Chart: **Nov 4's consensus sits just below the year-ago September quarter** Column chart of Cirrus Logic quarterly revenue from the September 2024 quarter through the June 2026 quarter, plus the consensus estimate for the September 2026 quarter.*

*Cirrus Logic quarterly revenue, USD millions, by calendar quarter, from its SEC filings; the final bar is the nine-analyst consensus for the September 2026 quarter reported on November 4, 2026. [9][12]*

KeyBanc's estimate for the December quarter is $2.19 a share. [10] Eighty percent of the revenue answers to one customer's wafer starts, and the first count is two weeks out. [2]

## Takeaway

Cirrus Logic's November 4 report is the first count of Apple's wafer-start cuts, and the Street's $150.71 target hangs on the foldable's momentum outrunning them.
