# LG Energy Solution's storage bet: 50 GWh of supply waits on 2 GWh of announced demand

> The Korean battery maker's marquee European demand news is a non-binding MOU worth about 4% of the 50 GWh North American capacity it is building, while lithium contracts and a 140 GWh backlog show where the real commitments sit. Q3 earnings on November 3 test whether the announced orders convert.

[LG Energy Solution](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/lg-energy-solution) [signed a memorandum of understanding](https://www.marketscreener.com/news/lg-energy-solution-and-energix-sign-mou-to-expand-ess-business-in-europe-and-north-america-ce785cdcd08df622) with Israeli renewable developer Energix on October 27 to supply about 2 GWh of grid-scale batteries in Europe and the US over 24 months, 1.5 GWh in Europe and 0.5 GWh in North America, with talks to lift the total to 4.5 GWh [1]. Korean media framed it as the company tackling the AI-driven power crunch [3].

The release itself is more careful: [the agreement is expressly non-binding](https://www.mk.co.kr/en/business/12186808), and volumes are to be finalized through further discussions [1][3]. The first project under it, a roughly 320 MWh storage site at Jonava in Lithuania, targets commercial operation only in 2027 [1][4].

## Supply is contracted; this demand is a handshake

The tension is in the arithmetic. The 2 GWh MOU, the month's headline demand news, equals about 4% of the [more than 50 GWh of North American LFP storage capacity](https://www.rocketpunch.com/en/discover/78744) LGES plans to have running by year-end across five plants, from Lansing and Holland in Michigan to the NextStar plant in Ontario [2][5]. Against the [roughly 140 GWh ESS order backlog](https://biz.chosun.com/en/en-industry/2026/10/27/W5YZ5MUGYNAOHHJKJEJXBDCFOM/) it carried at the end of last year, the Energix MOU is a rounding error [5].

*Chart: **The Energix MOU is small next to the capacity and backlog it must fill** Bars comparing the 2 GWh Energix MOU, the 4.5 GWh expansion scenario, LGES's 50-plus GWh North American ESS capacity and its roughly 140 GWh order backlog*

The demand side is not all paper. LGES booked more than 3 trillion won of new ESS orders in the first half of 2026 against a 90 GWh annual order target, signed a September supply deal with Canadian integrator e-Zinc, and earlier this year landed contracts with [Tesla](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/tesla), [DTE Energy](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/dte-energy) (6 GWh, tied to [Oracle](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/oracle)'s AI data center project) and a Google and Cypress Creek solar-plus-storage project [5]. It is also one of three companies worldwide named an [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) BESS "DSX Ready" partner, the qualification program for products that build AI factories [5].

To feed it all, LGES locked in 240,000 tons of lithium concentrate from Canada's Elevra over four years and 80,000 tons of lithium carbonate from US-based Smackover over ten years from 2029 [2].

## Conversion is the whole trade

Bulls still outnumber doubters: 31 analysts average a BUY with a 500,603 won target, 33% above the 375,000 won tape, even with the stock down 13.19% this year [1]. But [Q2's numbers](https://www.ad-hoc-news.de/boerse/news/corporate-news/lg-energy-solution-stock-expands-its-ess-order-target-to-90-gwh/70254237) show why conversion matters: 7.56 trillion won of revenue, up 35.8%, produced just 1.5% operating margin [6].

The counterpoint is real: ESS demand is genuinely surging on AI data center load, and LGES holds the manufacturing footprint and partnerships to capture it. The open question is timing. Energix targets a portfolio above 8 GW, but [its Lithuania site powers up in 2027](https://www.koreaherald.com/article/10916296) [1][4]. Watch the Q3 earnings release on November 3 [1]: if the announced MOUs start converting into binding backlog, the 50 GWh build pays; if not, shareholders carry idle capacity until they do.

(Context from our earlier coverage: [a October 19 piece covered the Ohio storage ramp](https://theinference.org/article/lg-energy-solution-is-now-kospi-s-no-5-company-its-ohio-storage-ramp-rests-on-small-toolmakers) and its small-toolmaker suppliers; this piece covers only what is new since, the Energix demand announcement set against the capacity and supply commitments.)

## Takeaway

The Energix MOU is a non-binding 2 GWh promise against 50 GWh of North American capacity and a 140 GWh backlog; November 3 earnings show whether announced ESS orders are converting.
