# Lilly sues six sellers over a $200-a-month black market in shots billed as its obesity drug

> Med spas and online sellers are moving retatrutide at about $200 a month while it is still in phase 3, against an estimated $1,000 to $1,500 approved list price. Lilly has sued six US sellers to clear the market before its first-quarter 2027 filing.

## Six lawsuits over a drug that is not for sale

Med spas and online sellers are moving shots billed as retatrutide at roughly $200 a month, pitched as a weight-loss "hack" [1]. The molecule is still in phase 3, and no regulator anywhere has approved it for human use, [Lilly](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/eli-lilly) says [2]. Selling it is illegal, so on August 12, 2026 [Lilly sued six US businesses, among them Aesthetic Envy Cosmetic Centers, Striker Pharmacy and Texas Peptides](https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/6025205-lilly-targets-illegal-weight-loss-drugs/), in California and Texas courts [2].

The FDA has said retatrutide cannot lawfully be compounded or sold [5]. Lilly's chief medical officer, David Hyman, calls the street product "entirely unverified, unapproved and not worth the risk" [2].

## What Lilly is defending

The molecule is worth the lawsuits. In [the TRIUMPH-1 phase 3 extension](https://investor.lilly.com/news-releases/news-release-details/lillys-triple-agonist-retatrutide-delivered-powerful-weight-loss), patients with severe obesity lost up to 30.3% of body weight over 104 weeks on the highest dose [3]. Lilly will [file for approval in the first quarter of 2027](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/23/eli-lilly-will-file-for-approval-of-retatrutide-obesity-drug-in-2027.html), later than first planned, citing manufacturing and quality data [4]. Analysts see nearly $4 billion in 2030 sales [1].

## 14,000 listings, 200 referrals, 90,000 vials

Lilly says it has [reported more than 14,000 websites, ads and listings in over 100 countries](https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/lilly-files-six-lawsuits-to-crack-down-on-black-market-retatrutide-weight-loss-shots/ar-AA29VhHF), and referred more than 200 people and entities to the FDA and the Justice Department [5]. The FDA has warned sellers that "research use only" labels do not hide marketing aimed at humans [6]. Customs intercepted 690 shipments holding 31,000 units of illicit GLP-1s in fiscal 2025, and nearly 90,000 vials in July alone [1]. The DOJ has indicted a counterfeit Ozempic ring supplied from China [7].

## The switch nobody can price

*Chart: **The gap Lilly must close: $200 street vials against a $1,000-plus launch price** Black-market retatrutide at about $200 a month versus an estimated $1,000 to $1,500 monthly list price.*

*Monthly prices. Street price as reported for illicit retatrutide sellers; list price range estimated by Jayne Hornung, chief clinical officer, MMIT. [1]*

Street buyers are anchored near $200 a month, against [a list price MMIT chief clinical officer Jayne Hornung estimates at $1,000 to $1,500](https://finance.yahoo.com/healthcare/articles/lilly-fighting-black-market-obesity-134359186.html) [1]. A fifth of GLP-1 users are outside the FDA's fence, and 12 percent cannot say which side they are on, Gallup finds [1]. The 2030 estimates only clear if those patients resurface at list price, five to seven times what they pay today.

## The tape shows no damage yet

[RBC expects Lilly to raise full-year revenue guidance](https://finance.yahoo.com/healthcare/articles/eli-lilly-likely-raise-revenue-131803259.html) at the Q3 report on diabetes and weight-loss momentum [8], and quarterly revenue has doubled since late 2024 [9].

*Chart: **Lilly's quarterly revenue has doubled since late 2024 on GLP-1 demand** Line chart of Eli Lilly quarterly revenue from Q3 2024 to Q2 2026, rising from $11.4B to $23.0B.*

*Quarterly revenue, US$ billions, as reported in Lilly's SEC filings; Q3 2026 not yet reported. [9][8]*

The market for compounded GLP-1s narrowed once shortages ended [1], which is the bull case for enforcement. That fight was over copies of an approved drug; this one formed before approval existed. Watch the Q3 print, the first-quarter 2027 filing, and the number nobody has yet: how many $200-a-month patients reappear at list price.

## Takeaway

Lilly's six lawsuits against $200-a-month street retatrutide are a pre-launch price war: the fight is to re-anchor buyers at a $1,000-plus list price before the first-quarter 2027 filing, and the test is how many of those patients resurface as paying ones.
