# Lockheed Martin answers Mach Industries' 1,000-mile missile with a ramjet and a $300 million production line

> The Army's five-way fly-off for a 1,000 km HIMARS missile now pits the largest US weapons maker's ramjet and new factory line against a startup valued at $3.7 billion that has not disclosed a production order.

[Lockheed Martin](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/lockheed-martin) put its card down on October 26 for the Army's Precision Strike Missile Increment 4: a ramjet engine built with [L3Harris](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/l3harris) that the company says roughly doubles the current missile's range, past 1,000 kilometres, fired from a HIMARS launcher at moving warships and relocatable ground targets [1]. Lockheed also says it has spent more than $300 million with partners on the propulsion behind that range and is running a $300 million automated production line for airframe and engine parts, [claims carried so far by one outlet](https://www.armyrecognition.com/news/army-news/2026/u-s-army-himars-could-strike-moving-warships-at-1-000-km-with-lockheed-martin-ramjet-prsm-missile) [1][2].

## The Army is shopping twice

[Five names hold prototype agreements](https://theinference.org/article/the-army-s-five-way-missile-fly-off-pits-13-billion-castelion-against-lockheed-and-rtx-for-a-1-000-km-round). On September 29 the Army [awarded Other Transaction Authority deals](https://www.militaryaerospace.com/home/article/55410959/mach-industries-selected-for-army-prsm-increment-4-missile-prototyping) to Lockheed, [Anduril](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/anduril), [Castelion](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/castelion), RTX and [Mach Industries](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/mach-industries), with a competitive fly-off and down-select planned for fiscal 2027 [9]. Separately, on October 14 it posted [a sources-sought notice](https://www.armyrecognition.com/news/army-news/2026/u-s-army-seeks-new-himars-prsm-increment-1-missile-producers-to-expand-long-range-strike-stocks) asking who else can manufacture the existing Increment 1 missile, responses due October 30 [3].

Lockheed holds that line under a March 2025 agreement worth up to $4.9 billion, starting with 400 missiles [3]. Lt. Gen. Frank Lozano, the Army's acquisition executive for fires, said going down to one vendor creates "[a choke point and a manufacturing constraint](https://www.defensedaily.com/lozano-wants-to-have-multiple-solutions-in-production-for-armys-new-munitions-programs/army/)," and he wants multiple solutions in production [4].

*Chart: **The program runs from $300 million of Lockheed's own propulsion spend to a $4.9 billion contract ceiling** Column chart of four dollar figures around the PrSM program: $0.3 billion of Lockheed propulsion spend, $0.3 billion production line, $1.2 billion October Army award and $4.9 billion Increment 1 contract ceiling.*

*Dollar figures around the PrSM program, each in its own right: Lockheed says it has spent more than $300 million with partners on the Increment 4 propulsion and runs a $300 million automated line for airframe and engine parts; the $1.2 billion is the Army payment for the current Increment 1 missile reported October 19; the $4.9 billion is the ceiling of Lockheed's March 2025 Increment 1 agreement. ## Mach raised $900 million on prototypes, not orders

Mach Industries, a Huntington Beach startup founded by 22-year-old Ethan Thornton, [raised a $600 million Series C extension](https://www.techceodaily.com/startups/defense-tech-funding-mach-industries-valuation) on September 10 at a $3.7 billion valuation, double its June figure, bringing the round to $900 million [5]. Its Increment 4 entry is Pike, a missile that launches on a rocket and then flies on a jet engine, [up to 1,000 miles by the company's account](https://www.defensedaily.com/mach-confirms-prsm-inc-4-offering-based-on-pike-long-range-strike-platform/army/) [6][7].

Thornton's pitch: long-range weapons "[built in numbers and fielded fast](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/mach-industries-selected-by-us-army-for-prsm-increment-4-prototype-development-302902293.html)" [6]. What is not disclosed anywhere: a production order. Tech CEO Daily's verdict on Mach, Anduril and [Shield AI](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/shield-ai) is that all three need production orders to grow into their valuations [5].

*Chart: **Mach's valuation doubled twice in 15 months, on prototypes rather than production orders** Bar chart of Mach Industries' post-money valuation across three funding rounds: $0.47 billion in June 2025, $1.8 billion in June 2026 and $3.7 billion in September 2026.*

*Post-money valuation at three rounds: $470 million in June 2025, $1.8 billion in June 2026, $3.7 billion in September 2026, per TechCrunch reporting carried by Tech CEO Daily. No production order disclosed as of November 1, 2026. [5]*

## The Army will keep near-misses alive

Prototype selection is not production. Flight tests in 2027 and 2028 decide Increment 4 [1], and Lozano said the Army is willing to "help sustain" contenders that merely get close into early and even full-rate production [4]. [Mach's](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/mach-industries) countermove is personnel: Zach Kirkman, [General Motors](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/general-motors)' deputy chief financial officer, [became Mach's CFO on October 21](https://www.ocbj.com/uncategorized/mach-industries-names-zach-kirkman-cfo/) to lead capital markets and finance as the company scales production [8].

A startup raised to $3.7 billion now has a CFO hired for its next phase before its first disclosed order book.

## The 2027 down-select is the tell

The fiscal 2027 fly-off decides the 1,000 km slot, and [the Increment 1 second-source decision](https://theinference.org/article/the-army-invites-second-builders-for-lockheed-martin-s-4-9-billion-missile-contract-replies-due-october-30) decides who else builds today's missile [3][9]. The single metric to watch: whether the Army's next munitions award names Mach for production, or whether the $900 million round closes still buying prototypes [3][9].

The Inference [reported on October 19 that Mach unveiled Pike](https://theinference.org/article/mach-industries-unveils-pike-its-1-000-mile-missile-as-the-army-pays-lockheed-1-2-billion) while the Army paid Lockheed $1.2 billion for the current missile; since then the contest has turned industrial on both sides.

## Takeaway

Lockheed's ramjet PrSM Increment 4 bid, backed by more than $300 million of propulsion spend and a $300 million automated line, meets Mach Industries' Pike in a fiscal 2027 fly-off that will test whether the $3.7 billion startup can turn prototypes into production orders.
