# Mach Industries unveils Pike, its 1,000-mile missile, as the Army pays Lockheed $1.2 billion

> Mach Industries' Precision Strike Missile Increment 4 entry is Pike, a manufacturability-first munition set against Lockheed's ramjet. The fly-off starts in fiscal 2027, and until then the Army keeps paying the incumbent.

[Mach Industries](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/mach-industries) is the first of [the Army's five missile contenders](https://theinference.org/article/the-army-s-five-way-missile-fly-off-pits-13-billion-castelion-against-lockheed-and-rtx-for-a-1-000-km-round) to show its hand, and so far the only one to detail its design [5]. [Its entry for the Precision Strike Missile Increment 4 program, confirmed on October 8, 2026](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/mach-industries-selected-by-us-army-for-prsm-increment-4-prototype-development-302902293.html), is Pike: a munition that launches on a rocket and then cruises on a jet, built to be manufactured in numbers rather than to set performance records [1][2]. The choice is the first test of a company whose valuation doubled in three months on exactly that promise [3].

## The first disclosed design is a manufacturing argument

Pike's stated design objectives are manufacturability and iteration, with jet engines, solid rocket motors, energetics and airframes made in-house, and operations that never depend on a runway [1]. The Army [requires every contestant's missile to fire from HIMARS, its truck-mounted rocket launcher, and hit moving ships and relocatable land targets beyond 1,000 kilometers](https://www.army.mil/article/295791/five_defense_companies_selected_to_develop_precision_strike_missile_increment_4_prototypes) [4]. Pike's published range of 1,000 miles clears that bar [1].

The other four have shown less. [Lockheed Martin](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/lockheed-martin), the incumbent producer [8], [ground-tested its booster-to-ramjet handoff with defense contractor L3Harris in June](https://www.militaryaerospace.com/home/article/55410959/mach-industries-selected-for-army-prsm-increment-4-missile-prototyping) [5]. [Anduril](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/anduril), the defense-tech company valued at $61 billion in May [3], and [Castelion](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/castelion), the defense startup whose [Blackbeard hypersonic missile entered Navy production this month on an "affordable mass" pitch](https://www.defensenews.com/news/your-navy/2026/09/17/us-navy-awards-defense-startup-200-million-for-blackbeard-hypersonic-missile/) [10], have not detailed their entries. On what has been disclosed, this is cheap mass against ramjet performance.

## Cheap missiles turn launcher fleets into deep magazines

The Army already fields the HIMARS launchers; what it lacks is a deep stockpile of rounds that reach past 1,000 kilometers [4]. A strike missile cheap enough to buy by the thousand turns each truck into an asset that can hunt fleets.

Mach's bet is that this contest is decided in the factory. Its Forge network of decentralized factories is pitched to [build systems and components "by the millions"](https://machindustries.com/) [6], and it bought rocket-motor startup Exquadrum and expanded its Huntington Beach floor before any of this arrived [3]. The design exists; the promised production line does not yet, and closing that gap is the work the Army just hired the field to race through.

## The clock is the bottleneck, and the incumbent gets paid either way

The timeline runs to 2030 before the Army picks. Fiscal 2027 brings prototype flight tests and a down-select, a first cut of the five-company field, with a final fly-off for mature designs in fiscal 2028 [4][8]. Final selection is expected in fiscal 2030, and service entry, at best, in the mid-2030s [7].

The Army is hedging both ends. A week before signing the prototype deals it [handed Lockheed a $1.2 billion award for initial production of Increment 2](https://theinference.org/article/the-army-paid-lockheed-1-2-billion-then-put-its-next-missile-up-for-bid), the next version of a missile already fired in combat [8]. Vietnamese trade press, citing U.S. media, also counts [a March order quietly modified to about $539 million, absent from the Pentagon's contract summaries](https://congthuong.vn/tin-cong-nghiep-quoc-phong-ngay-19-10-my-chi-hon-500-trieu-usd-mua-ten-lua-dan-dao-477592.html) [9].

*Chart: **Almost nine in ten recent missile dollars went to the incumbent** Column chart of three recent US missile awards: Lockheed Martin at $1.2 billion in September 2026 and about $539 million in March 2026, against Castelion at $200 million in September 2026.*

*US missile awards named in this story, in billions of dollars: Lockheed's $1.2 billion Increment 2 initial production award, a March order modified to about $539 million, and Castelion's $200 million Navy award for Blackbeard. The March figure is per Vietnamese trade press citing US media; the Castelion award is Navy, not Army. [8][9][10]*

## Watch the flights, not the raises

The listed exposure is direct: Lockheed and RTX are contestants [4], [L3Harris](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/l3harris) supplies the ramjet [5], and the production award keeps the incumbent's cash flowing while the challengers prove out [8]. Mach, Anduril and Castelion are venture-backed private companies [3][10], so most investors hold this contest through the listed names.

The manufacturing-first bet is the right one for a missile the Army will need in the thousands. The builder who closes the gap between a cheap design and a full production line deserves the franchise.

From here, watch the fiscal 2027 fly-off, where Pike has to fly, and the Pentagon's contract announcements until then, where quiet refills like March's surface.

## Takeaway

Mach's Pike is the first disclosed design in the Army's PrSM Increment 4 contest, but the fly-off only starts in fiscal 2027, and Lockheed's $1.2 billion Increment 2 award keeps the incumbent paid until the fiscal 2030 pick.
