# Microsoft detailed its Maia 300 chip but won't name its builder; Global Unichip is up 288% on the presumption

> Microsoft published the Maia 300's specifications at the Open Compute summit and promised multi-gigawatt Azure deployments, without naming the design house that shepherds the chip through TSMC. Investors have spent the year paying Global Unichip, the trade's presumed shepherd, as though Microsoft had confirmed it.

[Microsoft](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/microsoft) came to the Open Compute summit this week with [a finished specification for Maia 300](https://news.microsoft.com/maia-2026/), its third-generation homegrown accelerator for AI inference, and a pledge from Scott Guthrie, who runs the company's Cloud and AI group, that Azure Maia deployments will reach multi-gigawatt scale from 2027 [1][2][3]. The missing line is the name of the chip's shepherd, the design house that carries Microsoft's architecture through [TSMC](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/tsmc), the contract manufacturer that will fabricate it. The trade presumes the job is [Global Unichip](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/global-unichip-corp)'s, and GUC's shareholders have spent the year paying as though Microsoft had said so [3].

## The chip is a cost play on inference

The driver is Microsoft's own bill. The company expects to [spend more than $175 billion on capital projects](https://thetechportal.com/2026/10/12/microsoft-to-deploy-over-a-million-maia-300-ai-chips-to-cut-nvidia-reliance/) this calendar year, much of it on [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) GPUs, and Maia 300 is the exit: Microsoft claims roughly 40 percent more tokens per megawatt than what it calls leading GPU systems, its own figure, not independently tested [4][1]. The design backs the claim, with compute chiplets and HBM4 memory stacks sharing a single package on TSMC's 2-nanometer process, arranged so racks of chips act as one machine for agentic workloads that call many models in sequence [3][1]. The predecessor already answers Copilot queries, and the new silicon stays in-house, for Microsoft's own services rather than customer rentals [3][4].

## Microsoft left the builder's name off the spec sheet

The Next Platform [reports Global Unichip shepherded the first Maia](https://www.nextplatform.com/compute/2026/10/13/microsofts-clea-maia-300-inference-xpu-is-a-bandwidth-beast/5302874) and that the industry presumes it holds the second and third, while [Marvell](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/marvell) and [Broadcom](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/broadcom), the two dominant custom-chip co-designers, have reportedly chased the work; Microsoft has said nothing [3]. One investing service this week [called Marvell the designer of Microsoft's Maia processors](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/14/as-big-tech-designs-its-own-ai-chips-the-companies/) [5]. GUC's own record fits the presumption without confirming it: TSMC owns 35 percent of the company [6]. Its president describes hyperscaler programs he will not name, and the company has [reserved capacity in advanced packaging](https://www.techtimes.com/articles/323112/20260805/ai-chip-design-era-ends-tsmc-affiliate-guc-posts-record-revenue-turnkey-surpasses-80.htm), the sold-out step that turns chiplets into shippable accelerators [6]. At the same summit it showed a live co-packaged-optics compute tray with server maker Wiwynn and [Ayar Labs](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/ayar-labs), an optics startup backed by Nvidia and [AMD](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amd), with no hyperscaler named [7].

## Taipei has already priced the missing name

GUC closed in Taipei on Wednesday [up 288 percent for the year](https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/3443.TW/) [8]. The average one-year analyst target on the same quote page sits below where the stock now trades [8].

Both commitments are real and the payee is blank. Coverage puts Microsoft's ambition at more than a million Maia sockets, and a gigawatt of Maia 300 is roughly 575,000 devices [3][4]. Between this week's spec sheet and a gigawatt of shipped racks sits years of implementation and packaging work, and the company Microsoft names will have earned that volume. GUC reports earnings on October 29 [8]; a named hyperscaler program, or another silent quarter, will tell shareholders whether they own a contract or a rumor.

## Takeaway

Microsoft detailed the Maia 300 at OCP but never named its design house; Global Unichip, the presumed shepherd, is up 288% and already trades above the average analyst target, so its October 29 earnings are the test of whether shareholders own a contract or a rumor.
