# Musk rules SpaceX out of buying AI cloud firms as CoreWeave's debt hits $51.6 billion

> The sector's best-financed buyer says buying a neocloud is "pointless," and its biggest name now owes $51.6 billion against $2.6 billion of quarterly revenue. CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN slid again overnight.

## Sunday night, the one deep-pocketed buyer walked

[Elon Musk](https://theinference.org/markets/people/elon-musk) spent Sunday, October 25 on X closing the door on the neoclouds' richest possible rescuer [2][4]. "[SpaceX](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/spacex) is not buying any neoclouds. Pointless," he wrote, hours after confirming the rocket and satellite company had [closed $40 billion of debt to buy Nvidia GPUs](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/musk-says-spacex-raised-40-015149993.html) arriving in the first and second quarters of 2027 [2][4].

He predicted "guppy-level death and consolidation" for the sector's 200-plus players, saying debt markets have "almost entirely shut off access to money" for any company without substantial revenue independent of AI data centers [1]. [CoreWeave](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/coreweave) (CRWV) and [Nebius](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nebius) (NBIS) each fell 2.3% overnight, [IREN](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/iren) 2%, extending a two-week slide [1].

## Growth the credit market refuses to underwrite

A neocloud rents out AI computing bought mostly with borrowed money, which is exactly the model Musk says lenders have stopped funding. CoreWeave, the largest, booked about $2.5 billion of second-quarter revenue, up 112% year over year, and still lost more than a third of its value in October [3].

Its unsecured bonds yield about 15%, and the cost of insuring its debt against default passed 1,140 basis points intraday on October 15 [3][7]. [By the filings' own count](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001769628), the debt stack has outrun the revenue that services it for six straight quarters [5].

*Chart: **CoreWeave's debt has grown almost fivefold in six quarters, to $51.6 billion** Line chart of CoreWeave quarterly revenue and total debt from Q4 2024 to Q2 2026; debt climbs from $10.6B to $51.6B while revenue rises from $0.7B to $2.6B.*

## The bill lands while rivals bridge

Bernstein [cut its CoreWeave target to $51 from $74 on October 23](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/bernstein-cuts-coreweave-target-51-143321629.html) and estimates the company must raise $85 billion to fund its committed backlog, with $9 billion already covered [7].

Nebius took a [$3.5 billion, 364-day Citi loan on October 22](https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/economy/nebius-borrows-3-5-billion-as-investors-question-neocloud-debt/ar-AA2fRU2a) at a floating benchmark rate plus 2.75 percentage points; its chief executive Arkady Volozh conceded that asset-backed and debt financing had "temporarily dried up," while insisting Nebius can still fund "this gigawatt" [6][8].

[Chamath Palihapitiya](https://theinference.org/markets/people/chamath-palihapitiya) added the 2027 risk: capacity "bought and paid for but effectively underearning" [1]. That continues the split this page charted when [AI debt priced at 15% for CoreWeave and 6.25% for Iron Mountain](https://theinference.org/article/ai-debt-now-has-two-prices-15-for-coreweave-6-25-for-iron-mountain) [1].

## The floor, and the fight over it

The other side is real. [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) owns about 9% of CoreWeave, has committed up to $6.3 billion of capacity backstops, and its chief executive [Jensen Huang](https://theinference.org/markets/people/jensen-huang) said on October 15 that CoreWeave's "cost of capital is actually decreasing" [3]. CoreWeave's Mike Intrator wrote to staff that the backlog "more than supports all of our debt obligations," and JPMorgan ($125) and [Wells Fargo](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/wells-fargo) ($160) still rate the stock a buy [7]. Bernstein itself says Nvidia would step into a true downturn, which "raises the floor" [7].

*Chart: **Wall Street is split on CoreWeave: targets run from $51 to $160** Bar chart of CoreWeave share price targets: Bernstein $51, JPMorgan $125, Wells Fargo $160.*

*Price targets for CoreWeave shares. Bernstein cut its target to $51 from $74 on October 23 and rates the stock Underperform; JPMorgan and Wells Fargo rate it a buy. Source: Bernstein note, October 23, 2026. [7]*

What to watch is the price of the next refinancing, not the next Musk post: CoreWeave's $85 billion need is unfinanced, and Nebius's bridge expires in October 2027 [6][7]. When the cheapest borrower in AI compute rules himself out as a buyer, the floor under these stocks is a chipmaker's promise.

## Takeaway

With the sector's cheapest borrower ruling himself out as a buyer and debt markets shut to most neoclouds, CoreWeave's $85 billion funding gap now rests on Nvidia's promise to catch a true downturn.
