# Netflix cannot buy Warner Bros. Now its $20 billion content engine has to invent the savings

> The White House shut Netflix's path to Warner Bros., and the ad engine guiding $300 million short is meant to pay for what it must now build. Three levers remain, AI production, November's ad tools, and 30 theatrical releases, and only one of them has ever produced a measured dollar.

John Malone, a major Warner Bros. Discovery stakeholder, said on October 21 that Trump administration officials [told Netflix it had "no chance" of regulatory approval for the studio deal](https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/john-malone-trump-officials-told-netflix-no-chance-of-wbd-merger/ar-AA2fKVwa), and that this was "really the spike" that ended the bid [1]. [Netflix](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/netflix) stock sits at its lowest level in more than two years, down about 48% from its 2025 peak [2].

The acquisition route is closed, so growth now has to be manufactured inside the company: AI inside production, a rebuilt ad machine, and a theatrical muscle it never fully built. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos told investors the machine works and needs "home runs", and the content it spent $20 billion on last year has to earn more of them per dollar [3].

## The 40% is one director's estimate, not Netflix's disclosure

At Busan, Netflix's APAC production chief Sung Q Lee said [AI now runs through previs, production design, editing and VFX on roughly 300 titles](https://www.turkiyetoday.com/culture/netflix-exec-says-ai-is-in-300-titles-but-emotion-needs-humans-3230067) [4]. The number doing the rounds, a 40% production-cost cut, comes from director Kang Yun-sung, who is using China's Kling AI on one action film [4]. His previous AI-assisted feature grossed about $100,000 [4].

Netflix has put no dollar figure on its own AI savings, so the claim to watch is not the quote, it is the line: when content amortization stops rising with spend, the savings are real. The next quarterly report is the first document that can show it.

## The ad engine is $300 million short and still unmeasured

After the October 20 cut from roughly $3 billion to about $2.7 billion, which we covered in ["Netflix cut 1,000 jobs, then took $300 million off its 2026 ad forecast"](https://theinference.org/article/netflix-cut-1-000-jobs-then-took-300-million-off-its-2026-ad-forecast-new-markets-open-march-2027) [2], the question is what closes the gap. One of the integrations Netflix blamed for the shortfall lands in November, when [Trade Desk buyers can aim Netflix inventory with their own and third-party data](https://ppc.land/trade-desk-buyers-gain-4-million-data-segments-for-netflix-ads-in-november/) [5].

The buyers' real demand, in-DSP measurement, is still "coming soon" with no date [5]. Until it ships, Netflix is asking agencies to scale spend on inventory they cannot yet audit in place.

[Yahoo Finance](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/article/netflix-stock-sinks-after-announcing-q3-earnings-q4-revenue-forecast-falls-short-of-estimates-204545261.html) frames the quarter's problem as attention scarcity, with viewing shifting toward short-form video and [YouTube](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/alphabet) [2]. [Revenue growth has now fallen for two straight quarters](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001065280) [6].

*Chart: **Netflix's revenue growth has fallen for two straight quarters** Line chart of Netflix quarterly revenue growth year over year from Q3 2024 through Q2 2026, peaking at 17.6 percent in Q4 2025 and falling for two straight quarters to 13.4 percent in Q2 2026.*

## Home runs, borrowed where possible

The people who supplied the hits, the Duffer brothers of "Stranger Things", signed a four-year exclusive with [Skydance](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/skydance), now owner of the very studio Netflix wanted [3]. So the plan is [30 theatrical releases in 2027, a 49-day window for "Narnia"](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/21/netflix-theatrical-strategy.html), and Disney's Ice Age films plugged on the earnings call [3].

If the next quarter shows AI savings in content amortization and a measurement date for the ad stack, a 48% drawdown is the entry [3]. If both slip, $20 billion a year is buying fewer viewers [3].

## Takeaway

With the Warner Bros. bid dead, Netflix's savings have to come from inside: watch the next quarterly report for content amortization flattening under AI, and a measurement date for the ad stack that is $300 million short.
