# Netflix cut 1,000 jobs, then took $300 million off its 2026 ad forecast; new markets open March 2027

> Netflix printed a 34.6% operating margin tonight, then cut its 2026 advertising forecast by about $300 million and guided fourth-quarter revenue below consensus. The growth case is now a software-shipping case, with a March 2027 deadline attached.

[Netflix](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/netflix) just posted its widest operating margin in the five quarters its letter reports, then told investors its growth engine slipped again [1]. Retention was healthy in every region, with churn better than forecast globally and in the US [1]. The same document cut roughly $300 million from the 2026 advertising forecast and [guided fourth-quarter revenue below Wall Street's estimate](https://markets.financialcontent.com/stocks/article/stockstory-2026-10-20-netflix-nasdaqnflx-posts-q3-2026-sales-in-line-with-estimates-but-quarterly-revenue-guidance-slightly-misses-expectations) [1][2]. What an investor holds after tonight is a 34.6%-margin business whose growth now depends on shipping software by March 2027.

## The beat is real, and the miss is in the guide

The quarter itself was fine: revenue grew 12%, in line with the company's forecast [1]. Diluted EPS of $0.87 beat estimates [2]. The miss is the guide, with fourth-quarter revenue coming in 0.5% below consensus [2]. The stock traded down 4.3% to $65.79 immediately after reporting [2]. On the evening call, co-CEO Ted Sarandos [said there is "no need for a fundamental shift in the strategy," only better execution](https://www.thestreet.com/investing/earnings/netflix-nflx-q3-2026-earnings-call-stock-forecast-updates) [3]. Growth has now slowed every quarter since late 2025, and the guide extends the slide [1].

## The bottleneck moved from reach to shipping

Netflix's diagnosis of the advertising shortfall is unusually specific: a "slightly slower than expected rollout of some ad product capabilities" [1]. Those capabilities live in the Netflix Ads Suite, the ad stack Netflix is building in-house: programmatic buying through connected-TV marketplaces, measurement of reach and frequency inside advertisers' own systems, and an ad tier whose next wave of country launches begins in March 2027 [1]. Advertising at this scale is a machine-learning business. The audience of nearly one billion people is already there; what is late is the ad software [1].

## The cuts landed on the teams that ship

The response came earlier this month: [about 1,000 jobs eliminated, the largest round in Netflix's history](https://theinference.org/article/netflix-cut-1-000-jobs-then-said-each-dubbed-language-takes-50-to-60-people-results-come-tuesday), with product, technology, legal and HR teams hit hardest [4]. The letter books that decision as about 120 basis points of fourth-quarter margin, while saying the cuts let Netflix "aggressively invest in high impact areas" [1]. The guide that missed is the one that leans on the software that shipped late. What Netflix is asserting is that a smaller team, given better tools, ships faster.

## The high-impact money is going to AI

The letter does not name those areas, but this year's spending does. Netflix [paid $587 million in cash](https://variety.com/2026/film/news/netflix-paid-587-million-ben-affleck-ai-interpositive-1236815111/) for InterPositive, the AI filmmaking startup founded by actor Ben Affleck, whose tools build a model from a production's own footage to speed up post-production work like relighting and mixing [5]. Sarandos said on the July call that roughly 300 Netflix titles have used generative AI this year [5].

On the labor side, Netflix [typically fields 50 to 60 specialists to dub a title into a single language](https://biz.heraldcorp.com/article/10904043), and Catherine Letarte, its senior director of global content localization, says AI there is "only a tool that supports specialists" [6]. Netflix says AI assists these specialists; the cost line will test that claim.

## March 2027 will settle it

AI in the ad stack, in production and in localization is exactly where this margin should go, and Netflix is right to push it. The open question is pace, and [the letter supplies its own deadline: the first new ad markets open in March 2027](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1065280/000106528026000290/0001065280-26-000290-index.htm) [1]. If the stack ships on schedule, tonight was a pause in the growth story. If it slips again, the cuts delivered margin, and the growth they were meant to fund did not arrive.

## Takeaway

The quarter was fine but the guide was not: growth has slowed four straight quarters, the 2026 ad forecast is $300 million lighter, and after 1,000 job cuts booked as margin, the recovery now hangs on the in-house ad stack shipping by March 2027.
