# Netflix put its grosses on the scoreboard, and the floor printed at $17 a screen

> Netflix put its own grosses on a public scoreboard in October and is closing in on a studio lot, while viewing hours fall and the ad guide is cut; this week the scoreboard printed its floor, a $40 million Sony film at $17 a screen.

## The $17 screen

The worst number in Hollywood on Friday belonged to [Sony](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/sony). Klara and the Sun, a film by the director Taika Waititi said to have cost $40 million, [grossed $17 per theater across 880 venues](https://www.showbiz411.com/2026/11/06/box-office-sony-leaves-klara-makes-17-bucks-per-theater-after-costing-40-mil-cat-in-the-hat-opens-to-1-mil-in-previews-theranos-draws-blood), a little under $1.3 million in two weeks [1]. That is what a non-franchise film fetches on the open market, and it is the floor that [Netflix](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/netflix)'s new theatrical slate will now be measured against.

## Why the streamer wants a scoreboard it cannot massage

The scoreboard itself is two months old. [Variety reported on September 8](https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/movies/articles/netflix-report-box-office-numbers-180614716.html) that Netflix will publish box office grosses for six upcoming films, a first for a company that has kept its theatrical numbers private for a decade [2]. On October 18 it did so for the first time, with La Bola Negra [6].

The company whose co-CEO Ted Sarandos once called theatrical windows an "outdated concept" [2] is also moving to buy Radford Studio Center, a $400 million-plus, 55-acre Studio City lot with 22 soundstages, where Seinfeld and Gunsmoke were shot. [A source close to events told Deadline the deal is progressing on the agreed timetable](https://deadline.com/2026/11/netflix-radford-studio-purchase-latest-1237216149/) [3].

## The complication: the audience is drifting while the bills grow

The mechanism behind the pivot is subtraction. The investment bank [Jefferies](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/jefferies) estimates monthly viewing per member [fell to 49 hours in the first half of 2026 from 66 hours in the first half of 2023](https://www.theverge.com/streaming/1014826/netflix-earnings-q3-2026-viewing-time) [4]. Netflix cut its 2026 advertising forecast to about $2.7 billion from about $3 billion on slower product rollouts [5].

It also [trimmed its free cash flow guide to about $12 billion from $12.5 billion](https://www.storyboard18.com/amp/media-and-entertainment/netflix-cuts-2026-ad-revenue-forecast-to-2-7-bn-q3-revenue-rises-to-12-9-billion-india-viewing-hours-jump-24-112991.htm) because a real estate transaction closes in the fourth quarter [5], widely read as the Radford purchase. All while the buyback took 63.9 million shares for $4.8 billion, its largest ever [5]. Shareholders are funding the lot with cash that used to retire stock.

## The receipts: one hit, one dud, one guide

The core business still prints: third-quarter revenue of $12.87 billion, up 11.8 percent, operating income of $4.46 billion, a 34.6 percent margin [5]. The theatrical bet has two live data points. Netflix's first reported gross ever, [La Bola Negra, took $277,500 from four theaters](https://variety.com/2026/film/news/la-bola-negra-box-office-netflix-reports-grosses-1236915765/), a $69,375 per-screen average, over a 45-day exclusive window, the standard post-pandemic length [6].

*Chart: **The core still prints: ten straight quarters of double-digit revenue growth** Line chart of Netflix quarterly revenue rising from $9.6 billion in Q2 2024 to $12.9 billion in Q3 2026, with operating margin holding in the mid-20s to mid-30s percent*

Klara's $17 is what the same scoreboard pays when the audience does not show [1]. Inference covered the audience shift in September, when [YouTube took a record 14.2 percent of US TV time and Netflix slid to 7.8 percent](https://www.theinference.com/article/youtube-took-a-record-14-2-of-us-tv-time-in-july-netflix-slid-to-7-8-and-drew-two-downgrades-in-three-sessions) [10]. The new facts since are the published grosses, the Radford timetable and this floor.

*Chart: **The theatrical scoreboard: a record per-screen average against a $17 floor** Bar chart of per-theater averages: Parasite 2019 opening $131,072; La Bola Negra (Netflix) $69,375; Klara and the Sun (Sony) $17*

*Per-theater average at release: Parasite's 2019 three-screen opening and La Bola Negra's first weekend on four screens, Netflix's first reported gross (Variety); Klara and the Sun's Friday count across 880 venues, a $40 million Sony release (Showbiz411). US dollars. [6][1]*

## The counterpoint: exhibitors and the Street still want this in

Cinema owners would welcome a Netflix that markets like a studio [2], and the model pays when the film connects: Sony's Pictures segment [swung from ¥13.9 billion to ¥92.6 billion in operating income](https://www.techtimes.com/articles/330208/20261106/sony-q2-2026-ai-memory-shortage-stalls-rivals-cameras-while-boosting-sonys-margins.htm), up 568 percent, mostly on Spider-Man: Brand New Day [7]. The asset manager Guggenheim [keeps a buy on Netflix](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/06/biggest-friday-wall-street-analyst-calls-like-nvidia.html), pointing to 2027 catalysts: a first-quarter NFL game, the Women's World Cup, a content cycle under Peter Rice and expanded third-party deals [8].

Inference argued on October 5 that [Netflix trading auteur budgets for Disney's licensed library](https://www.theinference.com/article/netflix-swaps-650-million-of-auteurs-for-disney-s-leftovers) was the right bet [9]. Sport and a retooled slate, not ticket stubs, may be what actually carries the margin.

## What to watch

Fincher's Cliff Booth reports around Thanksgiving; Narnia and Charlie go wide in 2027 [2][6]. The first honest reading lands with the fourth-quarter print, when the Radford closing, the trimmed cash flow guide and the first full six-film grosses all land on one page. Whether the Radford deal actually closes is open: the seller's landlord, Hudson Pacific, had its CEO say on November 5 that Netflix "had not closed the transaction" and might close "later in the year, or not" [3].

The company spent a decade keeping its numbers private, and now it reports them next to rivals' grosses, where a $17-a-screen weekend is on the table [1][2].

## Takeaway

Netflix's new box office scoreboard printed its floor on Friday, Sony's $17 a screen, while the company buys a $400 million studio lot against falling viewing hours and a trimmed ad guide.
