# Neuberger's $700 million Crusoe loan is secured by gas turbines, the new collateral of AI

> The October 22 facility is secured by the generators themselves, not by data centers or GPUs, and was announced alongside a 106 MW hydro partnership at Itaipú Dam. How many megawatts $700 million buys, neither company will say.

On October 22, 2026, Neuberger Specialty Finance, the asset-based lending arm of Neuberger, [agreed to lend Crusoe $700 million](https://www.crusoe.ai/resources/newsroom/neuberger-and-crusoe-announce-700-million-facility) [1][2]. [Crusoe](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/crusoe) is a Denver-based company that builds and owns the data centers it rents out, what it calls AI factories, to tenants including [Microsoft](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/microsoft), Google, [Oracle](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/oracle) and [OpenAI](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/openai)'s Stargate data-center initiative [1]. What NBSF took as security is the gas generators Crusoe recently ordered: turbines and engines that sit on site, behind the meter, meaning the power is produced next to the data center instead of being drawn from the grid [1][2].

## Turbines have become bankable collateral

A facility secured on generators, rather than on data centers or GPU clusters, treats power equipment as an asset class in its own right. As [TSN's analysis](https://tsnmedia.org/crusoe-neuberger-power-financing/) reads it, the structure works like an aircraft lease: the lender believes the kit can be moved and resold even if a given AI project slips [2]. TSN's reporting also suggests lenders can only price it this way because [power, not chips, has become the long-lead item in data center construction](https://theinference.org/article/vertiv-bets-up-to-2-6-billion-that-ai-s-bottleneck-is-the-wire) [2].

The queue numbers back that reading. Interconnection timelines now average more than 2,100 days for projects that targeted first power in 2025, and gas turbines carry lead times of up to six years, per [Wood Mackenzie data cited by Forbes](https://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffsteele/2026/10/16/grid-no-longer-among-data-center-builders-biggest-problems/) [5]. Crusoe's own capital markets team called the financed assets "long-lead" in the announcement [2].

*Crusoe's capital raises in millions of dollars: the $3.9 billion Series F at a $30.9 billion post-money valuation (September 2026), the $750 million Brookfield credit facility (June 2025) and the $700 million Neuberger Specialty Finance equipment facility (October 2026). ## The debt stacks onto a $30.9 billion valuation

The facility lands on a balance sheet that just absorbed a $3.9 billion Series F, closed in September 2026 at a $30.9 billion post-money valuation, with more than 6 gigawatts of gross capacity under contract [1]. For Crusoe's equityholders, equipment-secured debt is a way to pay for long-lead generators without diluting a fresh, richly priced round. For the lender, the bet is on collateral that outlives any single project.

NBSF is not improvising. The group, led by Peter Sterling, has cumulatively invested more than $16 billion through 80 origination partners since 2018 and now manages over $5 billion across more than 50 portfolio companies, per the release [1]. Neuberger Private Markets, the parent division, manages over $170 billion of investor commitments as of June 30, 2026 [1].

## Same day, a hydro hedge in Paraguay

Crusoe also announced its first Latin America deployment that day: a [partnership with Paraguayan energy and infrastructure developer Araico at the Itaipú Hydroelectric Dam](https://www.crusoe.ai/resources/newsroom/crusoe-araico-hydroelectric-ai-infrastructure-partnership), with a first phase targeted for mid-2027, a path to 106 MW of IT capacity and long-term options to roughly 280 MW [3][4]. Araico, which launched out of stealth this month, is developing a 1.3 GW campus called Iguazu AI City, a $12 billion project its backers, including Founders Fund and the US International Development Finance Corporation, call the largest private investment in Paraguay's history [4].

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, signing on with a US business delegation, said the project "has the potential to be the largest private foreign investment in Paraguayan history" [3].

Read together, the two moves show a neocloud, one of the startups renting AI compute from infrastructure they own rather than [AWS](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amazon) or Azure, hedging power risk in both directions at once: buy off-grid gas hardware at home, ship load abroad to stranded hydro. That is what it takes to keep uptime promises to Microsoft, [Google](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/alphabet) and Stargate while the grid cannot connect a new campus in under six years [1][2][5].

## What decides the trade

Two disclosures will tell whether the structure works. The first is the megawatts: neither company has said how much generating capacity $700 million buys, and that number decides whether the facility covers a meaningful share of Crusoe's contracted 6 GW [1][2]. The second is resale: if AI compute demand cools and Crusoe's factories slip, watch whether NBSF can actually redeploy the generators, the assumption the whole aircraft-lease logic rests on [2].

## Takeaway

Neuberger's $700 million loan to Crusoe treats gas turbines as bankable collateral, a sign that power equipment, not chips, is now the long-lead asset in AI infrastructure.
