# Nvidia prepays $1.4 billion for a chip-testing plant that doesn't exist yet

> Nvidia is paying a Taiwanese test house about $1.4 billion up front for a plant that does not exist yet, its second supplier prepayment since July. The same day, Barclays told clients the AI hardware boom is mostly memory inflation.

## The tester gets paid before the plant exists

[Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) has agreed to pay King Yuan Electronics (KYEC), one of Taiwan's largest independent chip testers, up to NT$45 billion, about $1.4 billion, in advance for capacity at a US test facility that does not yet exist, [trade press reported on October 14](https://daily.semidoped.com/p/daily-update-october-14th-2026) [1]. The likely site is concrete: a 23-acre lot at 273 W. Everman Parkway in Fort Worth, Texas, where a KYEC subsidiary plans at least $1 billion of buildings plus $300 million of equipment, with [a city council vote on a tax abatement set for October 27](https://hoodline.com/2026/10/taiwan-chip-tester-eyes-1-3b-fort-worth-plant-council-vote-set-for-oct-27/) [5]. KYEC's board cleared up to $1.4 billion of US investment on July 10 [5]. The cash lands before a single machine is installed.

## The second prepayment in three months

On July 23, [Amkor](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amkor-technology), the Arizona packaging house, [announced a $1.5 billion multi-year packaging-and-test partnership with Nvidia](https://ir.amkor.com/news-releases/news-release-details/amkor-technology-announces-strategic-partnership-nvidia-expand) that [includes a prepayment for US capacity](https://theinference.org/article/amkor-s-2-5-3-billion-ai-packaging-bet-partly-prepaid-by-nvidia-gets-its-first-test-october-26) [4]. The same day the test deal surfaced, [ASML](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/asml) [posted third-quarter sales of €11.7 billion](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/asml-reports-11-7-billion-050000954.html), lifted 2026 guidance to between €44 billion and €45 billion, and said its planned supply for 2027 and 2028 "will not fully meet the demand of our customers" [3]. Lithography is capped. Packaging was prepaid. Now test is prepaid.

## Nvidia's filing shows who carries the risk

Nvidia's [10-Q, filed August 26](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1045810/000104581026000075/nvda-20260726.htm), shows supply-and-capacity commitments of $279 billion, up from $119 billion one quarter earlier, aimed "primarily" at "memory and manufacturing facilities" [8]. The same filing carries $51.2 billion of non-marketable equity investments, double January's level, $63.1 billion of receivables, and $15.6 billion of customer advances taken in six months [8]. Nvidia lends to its suppliers, guarantees AI-cloud partners' leases and collects its customers' cash up front, all on one balance sheet. No filing can prove the demand curve holds, only that Nvidia is paying as if it does.

*Chart: **Nvidia's supply commitments are 2.4 times its receivables and equity stakes combined** Bar chart of three balances on Nvidia's July 2026 balance sheet: $279 billion of supply-and-capacity commitments, $63.1 billion of receivables and $51.2 billion of non-marketable equity investments*

*Period-end balances from Nvidia's Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 26, 2026, in billions of dollars. The $15.6 billion of customer advances taken in the six months to July is a flow, not a balance, so it is left off the chart. [8]*

## Barclays called it a memory cycle the same morning

The other camp spoke on October 14. Barclays downgraded Dell, [HPE](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/hewlett-packard-enterprise) and [NetApp](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/netapp), arguing hardware revenue growth "stems largely from price hikes driven by the global memory chip shortage", not enterprise AI adoption, and fades as memory prices normalize [6]. [Dell fell 11.6%](https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/general/dell-stock-dips-by-11-on-barclays-downgrade-data-center-sell-off-fears-mount/ar-AA2efAly) [7]. The test layer prints differently: [Camtek](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/camtek), whose inspection tools check packaged AI chips, [pre-announced record third-quarter revenue of $160 million to $161 million](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/camtek-pre-announces-record-q3-130000907.html), up 27%, guided the fourth quarter to about $180 million, up 40%, and booked over $800 million of orders since January [2]. Michael Dell's position runs opposite his bank's: AI infrastructure demand should outpace supply through 2030 [7].

*Chart: **Camtek's growth went flat in 2025, then AI test demand broke the slope** Column chart of Camtek's quarterly revenue from Q1 2024 to Q4 2026, rising from about $97 million to a guided $180 million, with the last two quarters marked as company estimates*

*Reported quarterly revenue from Camtek's SEC filings through Q2 2026; Q3 '26 is the midpoint of the company's preliminary range and Q4 '26 is its guidance, both from its October 14, 2026, pre-announcement. [2][9]*

## Fort Worth, Camtek and memory prices will settle it

Watch the Fort Worth vote on October 27 and Camtek's full results in early November, then memory prices against $279 billion of already-signed commitments [5][2][8]. A customer who prepays is voting for shortage, with his own capital.

## Takeaway

Nvidia has now prepaid two suppliers since July, and the $1.4 billion to KYEC lands before the Fort Worth test plant exists; Barclays reads the same hardware boom as memory price inflation, while ASML's guidance and Camtek's order book argue the shortage is real.
