# Nvidia's $3.5 billion sits behind China's compute wall

> ByteDance is in advanced talks to buy bespoke MediaTek data-center chips, a deal that would hand the Taiwanese phone-chip designer its second major custom-silicon customer after Google. Nvidia cannot sell its best chips into China; it has $3.5 billion invested in the company that can.

ByteDance, TikTok's owner, is in advanced talks to buy bespoke data-center chips from [MediaTek](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/mediatek), the Taiwanese designer best known for phone processors, [Bloomberg reported on October 14](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/bytedance-talks-secure-mediatek-ai-023911406.html) [1]. The deal says as much about Washington as about Taipei: [US export curbs bar Chinese buyers from Nvidia's cutting-edge accelerators](https://theinference.org/article/beijing-is-not-reopening-nvidia-s-china-spigot-it-is-installing-a-meter) but allow custom designs below a computing-power threshold, and [Huawei](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/huawei), China's main domestic AI-chip maker, cannot cover the shortfall [1]. ByteDance would become only MediaTek's second major custom-silicon customer after [Alphabet](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/alphabet)'s Google [1]. [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia), barred from selling its best parts into China, has $3.5 billion invested in the designer that can [1] [2].

## The export rule wrote the product

Nvidia's share of China's data-center AI chip market [fell to 34% in the first half of this year](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/nvidia-ai-chip-share-china-061558719.html) [3]. Huawei, at 28%, [is now the largest local supplier](https://theinference.org/article/huawei-declares-victory-over-nvidia-in-china-on-evidence-it-will-not-show), with a string of smaller Chinese designers behind it [3]. The demand never left; it rerouted into silicon the rules permit. ByteDance signed [Qualcomm](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/qualcomm), the US chip designer, for millions of custom AI chips earlier this year [1]. In June it sought 50,000 accelerators from China's Iluvatar CoreX for its Doubao assistant [4].

## MediaTek is racing out of phones

The seller needs this deal as much as the buyer does. Phone revenue, still the largest slice of MediaTek's business, fell 20% year over year last quarter [6]. Its first AI accelerator is set to enter production in the fourth quarter, and the company [expects more than $2 billion of data-center revenue this year](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/mediatek-inc-tpe-2454-q2-010316865.html) [6]. For 2027 it sizes that market at $80 billion, and it has just raised its share target to 15–20% [6]. The buyer is borrowing to build: capital spending of as much as $70 billion this year, possibly $100 billion in 2027, after a $30 billion loan in September [1]. The scarcity behind that borrowing reached [Elon Musk](https://theinference.org/markets/people/elon-musk), who amplified a compute-scarcity chart from [a16z](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/a16z), the venture firm Andreessen Horowitz, quoting researcher Nathan Lambert of Trillium Labs: Chinese labs have "a comparable talent pool" and are "more compute-starved" [5].

*Chart: **MediaTek's AI line is small next to the money chasing it** Bar chart comparing ByteDance's 2026 capex ceiling, its September loan, Nvidia's stake in MediaTek, and MediaTek's expected 2026 data-center revenue, in billions of dollars.*

## The threshold owns the order book

The limiting link on this chain is no longer design talent or fabrication. It is a number in the US export code. The same threshold that admits MediaTek's chips is the one Washington can tighten, and [Tencent](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/tencent), the Chinese tech giant behind WeChat, shows what buyers do when purchase is barred outright: it [signed a five-year Oracle lease for roughly 100,000 chips](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/tencent-leases-100-000-ai-111016337.html) it can only rent, at a bill of about $7 billion [7]. ByteDance's spread of orders across three suppliers is insurance against exactly that kind of policy change [4].

## Who gains, and who pays

MediaTek gains a second anchor customer and a route out of handsets [1]. Qualcomm defends the supply deal it signed with ByteDance in May [4]. Nvidia [loses the direct China sale](https://theinference.org/article/cambricon-s-39-margin-is-a-toll-on-nvidia-s-exile-and-beijing-may-lift-it) but keeps its stake in the winner, whose custom chips are built to plug into Nvidia racks through NVLink Fusion, its interconnect standard [2]. [Oracle](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/oracle) collects rent where ownership is impossible [7].

## Three decisions decide this trade

MediaTek's accelerator has to reach production on schedule this quarter [6]. ByteDance's 2027 budget call lands with results early next year [1]. And Washington can reprice every order in this story at once by moving the compute threshold, the one number that decides which chips a Chinese buyer may own [1]. Either way the compute reaches Chinese labs; what the three decisions settle is who gets paid for delivering it.

## Takeaway

US export rules, not demand, now decide who sells AI compute to China: ByteDance's talks with MediaTek would pay out Nvidia's $3.5 billion bet, and the compute threshold lets Washington reprice the whole order book at once.
