# One SpaceX share per kid: Musk's $10.5 billion answer to Anthropic's fund

> Elon Musk pledged one of his own SpaceX shares to every American child in 2027, about $10.5 billion at Friday's close, hours after Anthropic committed 5% of its shares to a public-benefit fund. Musk's gift moves stock he already owns; Anthropic's moves company equity into a limited liability company it controls.

Just before 4 a.m. ET on Monday, [Elon Musk](https://theinference.org/markets/people/elon-musk) [posted on X](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/19/elon-musk-spacex-shares-giveaway-kids.html): "Next year, I will give one of my [SpaceX](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/spacex) shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many." [1][2] Who counts as a kid, how a share reaches a newborn and what "many" means all went unanswered [2]. He is giving stock he already owns, so no new SpaceX shares are issued and no other holder is diluted; [Anthropic](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/anthropic)'s weekend answer moves company equity into a limited liability company it controls [5][6].

## Half a percent of SpaceX, 1.5 percent of Musk

The Census Bureau counted 72 million Americans under 18 as of July 1, 2025; at Friday's $146.03 close, one share each costs about $10.5 billion [1]. An August SEC filing credits Musk with 4.8 billion SpaceX shares, rising to 6.4 billion with unvested awards and options, a 48.4% beneficial stake [1]. Those 6.4 billion set against 48.4% imply roughly 13 billion shares outstanding, which [squares with the $1.9 trillion valuation the stock carries near $146](https://www.theadvocate.com.au/story/9371492/musk-pledges-to-give-spacex-share-for-every-us-child/) [3]. The gift is about 1.5% of his 4.8 billion shares and roughly half a percent of the company [1]. The stock, listed at $135 in June, [sits well below its post-debut peak](https://coincentral.com/elon-musk-says-every-kid-in-america-will-get-a-spacex-share-next-year/) [3][4].

## Anthropic's version moves a fifth of the company

The pledge answered Anthropic, whose Claude competes with [xAI](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/xai), the AI business SpaceX absorbed in February [3][4]. On Sunday the IPO-bound company [said it would commit 5% of its shares to a wholly owned LLC](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/doing-elon-musk-says-ll-034646779.html), the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, adding 2% for every 50% rise in valuation above an undisclosed baseline, subject to shareholder approval [1][5][6]. Co-founders Dario and Daniela Amodei have pledged 80% of their equity, pointing roughly 20% of the company at public purposes [5][6]. Musk had already replied: "I recommend giving the shares directly to the public." [5][6] Former Trump technology adviser [David Sacks](https://theinference.org/markets/people/david-sacks): whether it serves the public good "remains to be seen." Software investor Vijar Kohli: "pre-emptively diluting voting rights." [5]

*Chart: **Anthropic points roughly $300 billion of equity at public purposes; Musk's pledge is $10.5 billion** Bar chart comparing pledged public-purpose equity in dollars: Anthropic's total including founder pledges, Anthropic's launch fund, Musk's giveaway and Gwynne Shotwell's earlier pledge*

*Pledged, not delivered, in billions of dollars. Musk's $10.5 billion as printed by CNBC at Friday's $146.03 close; Shotwell's $320 million as reported by CoinCentral; the Anthropic bars apply its 5% launch commitment and the roughly 20% total dedication to the $1.5 trillion IPO valuation investors discussed at the October 14 meeting. [1][2][5][6]*

## A fifth of a company being marked down

At a October 14 investor day, Anthropic said third-quarter revenue rose 45% to $16.8 billion, a slower pace than the prior quarter's doubling; investors at the meeting [discussed a $1.5 trillion valuation for the November listing, down from about $2 trillion](https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/other/investors-temper-anthropic-ipo-valuation-expectations-over-revenue-growth-slowdown-sources-say/ar-AA2ekDWW) [5][7]. A fifth of that is roughly $300 billion of equity, and the terms are at least written: the fund will not lobby or fund political campaigns [6]. Musk's pledge is a 4 a.m. post with no terms at all [1][2].

## December decides which shares exist

SpaceX reports third-quarter results on Tuesday, [Tesla](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/tesla) on Wednesday [4]. Tesla has set its annual meeting for December 3, and [Barclays expects an all-stock merger to be announced before it](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/barclays-expects-tesla-spacex-merger-102050206.html) [8], leaving Musk about 37% of the combined equity and 56% of the votes [4]. Seeking Alpha's [four-analyst panel splits one to three](https://seekingalpha.com/news/4654076-sa-asks-should-tesla-merge-with-spacex): Mike Zaccardi backs the merger; the other three warn Tesla holders would inherit SpaceX's loss-making AI projects [9]. An all-stock deal would convert every SpaceX share into combined-company stock before any 2027 delivery. The pledge's real deadline is not next year; it is December 3.

## Takeaway

Musk's $10.5 billion kid giveaway is a post, not a plan: the shares he would hand out may not even exist in their current form after the December 3 Tesla-SpaceX merger window, while Anthropic's rival fund has actual terms.
