# PDF Solutions beat estimates, fell 13%, and its backlog shrank for the first time since 2024

> PDF Solutions beat on earnings and reaffirmed its 20% growth target, but its backlog fell for the first time since 2024 and the stock dropped 13%. The fourth-quarter bookings number now decides both sides.

[PDF Solutions](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/pdf-solutions), a Santa Clara company whose software helps chipmakers analyze factory data, reported [record third-quarter revenue of $68.3 million](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1120914/000143774926035288/0001437749-26-035288-index.htm) on November 5, up 20% year on year, and beat earnings estimates: non-GAAP EPS of $0.40 against [the $0.34 Zacks consensus](https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/pdf-solutions-pdfs-tops-q3-214513183.html), a 17.65% surprise [1][3]. The stock fell 13.24% to $34.52 anyway [6]. The number the headline ignored is the backlog: $247.2 million at September 30, down from $270.7 million in Q2 and $292.0 million a year earlier, its first sequential decline since 2024 [1][4].

## The order book must grow, and the deals have not landed

Getting year-end backlog back above $271 million implies roughly $100 million of net bookings in the fourth quarter [5]. What management has actually disclosed is one eight-figure eProbe contract and several seven-figure deals [5].

CEO John Kibarian says enough of a handful of large contracts will close in Q4 to grow backlog, with the rest spilling into Q1 2027; [the call summary](https://www.marketbeat.com/instant-alerts/transcript-what-pdf-solutions-pdfs-said-on-its-q3-earnings-call-2026-11-06/) puts Q4 revenue growth near 17%, below the reaffirmed 20% annual target [1][4]. CFO [Adnan Raza](https://theinference.org/markets/people/adnan-raza) blamed bookings and deal timing, and committed only that year-end backlog will exceed the Q2 level [4].

## The other side of the ledger

Sellers also point to Exensio Aurora, the AI-native architecture unveiled in September, which has no revenue yet and no measured uplift; Kibarian called feedback "mostly demo-related" [4][5]. Q3 capex of $15.1 million outran operating cash flow of $13.8 million, and Q4 gross margin is guided to 75% to 77% against the 77% model [5].

At $34.52 the stock trades at 138 times trailing GAAP earnings, though 23 times forward, and is still up 39.5% this year [3][6]. Buyers of the dip own a record quarter, 28% non-GAAP operating margin and a real equipment-cycle proxy: Cimetrix and secureWISE are about 20% of revenue, growing faster than the company, and [Intel](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/intel) standardized on secureWISE across front-end, test and assembly [4][5].

Sellers bet the bookings do not come. The evidence arrives in Q4 bookings, with [Onto Innovation](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/onto-innovation)'s November 9 report, [consensus $392.03 million of revenue](https://www.tradingview.com/news/tradingview:800004afdc155:0-onto-q3-26-earnings-revenue-estimate-is-392-03m-usd/), the next outside read on the same capex cycle [7]. This comes amid [a sector-wide selloff](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/markets/stocks/NVDA/pressreleases/8679733/kulicke-and-soffa-amtech-photronics-broadcom-and-nvidia-stocks-trade-down-what-you-need-to-know/) after senators called for brakes on AI data center construction, which knocked [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) down 7.5% the same day [8].

*Chart: **Revenue rose to a record $68.3M as backlog slid to $247.2M** Grouped columns for Q3 2025, Q2 2026 and Q3 2026: revenue of $57.1M, $61.5M and $68.3M against ending backlog of $292.0M, $270.7M and $247.2M, with backlog falling for two straight quarters while revenue sets a record.*

## Takeaway

A record revenue quarter could not offset the first sequential backlog decline since 2024; whether year-end backlog tops $271 million hinges on Q4 net bookings of roughly $100 million against one disclosed eight-figure contract.
