# Pixelworks sold the unit that carried its revenue to VeriSilicon; it trades 40% below cash before November 11

> VeriSilicon bought the unit that produced Pixelworks' revenue in January, leaving $52.9 million of cash and a pre-revenue motion-grading platform. The stock trades near $32 million; Q3 results on November 11 and a device-licensee reveal due by year-end decide whether that discount is right.

[Pixelworks](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/pixelworks) has engineered itself into a cash fund with a licensing bet attached, and the market prices that bet below zero. On January 6, 2026, the company [closed the sale of Pixelworks Shanghai](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1040161/000104016126000002/pxlw-20260106.htm), the subsidiary whose display-processing chips carried its smartphone revenue, to a special-purpose buyer led by the Chinese chip firm VeriSilicon, collecting about $51 million after Chinese taxes [1][2].

What remains is TrueCut Motion, a platform that grades a film's motion shot by shot so high-frame-rate footage plays without judder, supported by $52.9 million of June 30 cash and no debt [3][4]. The 6.294 million basic shares from the June quarter, at the November 2 close of $5.00, value the whole company near $32 million, about 40% below the cash pile [3][6]. Strip the cash out and the market is paying roughly minus $21 million for TrueCut and everything around it [3][6].

*Chart: **The Shanghai sale refilled the cash pile; the equity still trades below it** Line chart of Pixelworks' cash and cash equivalents from Q3 2024 to Q2 2026, falling from about $29 million to $11 million, jumping to about $58 million the quarter the Shanghai sale closed, then easing to $52.9 million, with a derived reference line at the company's market value of about $31.5 million.*

*Cash and cash equivalents at quarter end, US$ millions, from Pixelworks' SEC filings. The reference line is derived: 6.294 million June-quarter basic shares at the November 2, 2026, close of $5.00. [1][2][3][6][7]*

## Cinema validates the technology, and pays nothing for it

The demand case for the format is real. [On the August 11 call](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1040161/000104016126000042/q22026conferencecallscript.htm), Chief Executive Todd DeBonis, relaying results that exhibitors including AMC and Dolby had reported, said premium formats have taken almost a fifth of 2026 domestic box office from about 4% of screens [4]. Kinepolis, a European cinema operator, has agreed to support the expanded exhibition of TrueCut-enhanced versions of new releases on its Laser Ultra large-format screens [8], and China Film's CINITY premium circuit says it is prioritizing those versions of tentpole movies [9].

None of that pays. DeBonis told analysts that theatrical releases bring Pixelworks no revenue today [5]. All of 2025 delivered about $690,000 [4]; the second quarter delivered $64,000 against $3.4 million of operating expenses [3].

## The burn is slow, and the reveal is scheduled

The operating model gives the bet years of runway. Management [guided cash operating expenses below $2.5 million a quarter](https://seekingalpha.com/news/4631188-pixelworks-expects-cash-operating-expenses-below-2_5m-per-quarter-in-2026-while-adding-a-new) through 2026, with $400,000 to $500,000 of interest income arriving against that each quarter [4][5]. The net burn is therefore at most about $2.1 million a quarter, roughly six years of cash at the June 30 balance, and the second quarter's actual cash use from operations was $1.7 million [4][5]. A $5 million buyback authorized in the first quarter is more than half spent [3][5].

*Chart: **Quarterly cash use fell to $1.7 million, the smallest of the last eight quarters** Column chart of Pixelworks' cash used in operations by quarter from Q3 2024 to Q2 2026, net outflows falling from $7.8 million to $1.7 million, with the heaviest uses in the quarters before the Shanghai sale closed and the lightest in the latest quarter.*

*Cash used in operating activities by quarter, US$ millions, negative is a net outflow, from Pixelworks' SEC filings. Q2 2026 was the smallest cash use of the stretch, against management guidance of cash operating expenses below $2.5 million a quarter. [11]*

The nearest money is an unnamed large device maker, signed to a multi-year certification agreement covering a family of devices and described by DeBonis as the first major device licensee, to be named alongside the partner's product plans before year-end [4][5].

## The discount goes on trial November 11

The 40% discount is the market pricing the chance that the licensee never pays [6][10][4][5]. November 11, after the close, brings the second full quarter as a licensing company and puts two numbers on trial: [revenue against the $300,000 consensus](https://www.marketbeat.com/earnings/reports/2026-11-11-pixelworks-inc-stock/) [6][10], and cash operating expenses against the $2.5 million guide [4][5]. The device reveal promised by year-end then decides whether the equity is worth more than the cash.

## Takeaway

Pixelworks holds $52.9 million of cash with no debt and burned only $1.7 million of cash in Q2, yet the equity trades near $32 million; the November 11 report and the device-licensee reveal promised by year-end decide whether the 40% discount stands.
