# Raytheon radar and a Qatar deal land on Shield AI's unflown $12.7 billion X-BAT

> Raytheon will build the radar and electronic warfare for Shield AI's X-BAT, and a Rheinmetall joint venture will take its Hivemind software to Qatari naval drones. Both arrived within 48 hours for a $12.7 billion valuation that still waits on the aircraft's first flight.

## Two signatures in 48 hours

[Shield AI](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/shield-ai) spent the week collecting other people's logos. On October 27, Raytheon's Advanced Technology arm, part of the NYSE-listed RTX, [agreed to supply the radar and electronic warfare systems](https://aviationweek.com/defense/aircraft-propulsion/shield-ai-taps-rtx-x-bat-radar-electronic-warfare-systems) for the X-BAT, Shield AI's autonomous, vertical-takeoff combat aircraft [1].

A day later at the Milipol Qatar show, the company [signed a memorandum of understanding](https://www.prnewswire.co.uk/news-releases/barzan-holdings-joint-venture-with-rheinmetall-ag-rheinmetal-barzan-advanced-technologies-rbat-and-shield-ai-to-advance-autonomy-on-qatari-unmanned-surface-vessels-usv-302920788.html) with RBAT, the joint venture between Germany's Rheinmetall and Qatar's Barzan Holdings, to explore running its Hivemind autonomy software on Qatari unmanned surface vessels [2]. Hivemind, the software both deals point at, has already piloted more than 40 platforms, from F-16 fighters to a satellite in low Earth orbit [2].

## What the logos lean on

The endorsements land on a $12.7 billion valuation from a $2 billion March raise [3], part of the venture wave that [doubled Mach Industries to $3.7 billion](https://theinference.org/article/mach-industries-unveils-pike-its-1-000-mile-missile-as-the-army-pays-lockheed-1-2-billion). President and co-founder Ryan Tseng projects a fully missionized X-BAT at about $30 million apiece, a tenth of an F-35's life-cycle cost, at 150 aircraft a year; those are company targets, not orders [4].

US Navy commitments behind the jet total $400 million, counting [a $150 million award](https://www.geekwire.com/2026/shield-ai-lands-150m-navy-contract-to-advance-ai-piloted-fighter-jet-that-will-be-built-south-of-seattle/) matched dollar-for-dollar by Shield AI [5]. What delivers revenue today is the smaller, combat-proven V-BAT: Taiwan alone is due 280 of them by 2029, with 150 in service by the end of 2027 [6].

## Validation without an invoice

Neither new deal carries a number. The Raytheon terms are undisclosed [1], and the Qatar memorandum states no value [2]. Both names landed in a week when the X-BAT still has not performed its defining maneuver, taking off vertically: [the first full-scale prototype was due around the end of October](https://www.msn.com/en-us/technology/aviation/us-navy-could-see-first-vtol-x-bat-uav-by-end-of-this-month/ar-AA2elgrT), with flight testing slated for late 2026 in Kansas [7][5]. Believers read the primes as diligence done on their behalf; skeptics count two unsigned-price deals and one unflown jet.

*Chart: **Shield AI's $12.7B mark runs a distant second to Anduril's $61B** Bar chart of 2026 defense-tech venture valuations: Anduril $61B, Shield AI $12.7B, Saronic $9.25B, Mach $3.7B*

*Post-money valuations from reported 2026 rounds, in billions of US dollars: Shield AI and Saronic in March, Anduril in May, Mach in September. [3]*

## The gate in Kansas

The tell is scheduled, not promised. [New Zealand's polar patrol tender](https://www.janes.com/defence-intelligence-insights/defence-news/air/shield-ai-and-insitu-pacific-weigh-new-zealand-polar-patrol-uav-bids) closes on November 8, names a preferred bidder in late January and signs in early May 2027, with Shield AI weighing a V-BAT bid [8]. The X-BAT's first flight, targeted since the GE F110 engine choice in late 2025 [9], is the gate that reprices everything behind it. Until it opens, the only marks moving are private ones.

## Takeaway

Shield AI collected Raytheon radar and a Qatar autonomy memorandum within 48 hours, but neither carries a price, and the $12.7 billion valuation still waits on the X-BAT's first vertical takeoff.
