# RS Technologies abandons car cameras for AI wafers, booking an unsized loss; results land November 12

> RS Technologies will dissolve the Huizhou plant it inherited from Sony, cancel its automotive camera-module entry and book an extraordinary loss it has not yet sized. The resources go to the prime-wafer businesses that AI chip demand runs on.

[RS Technologies](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/rs-technologies) has concluded that its plan to enter China's car-camera business cannot reach the returns it requires, and the market has spent the days since the vote repricing the company [1]. On October 9 the board of the Tokyo-listed wafer reclaimer, which also makes new [prime wafers](https://theinference.org/article/globalwafers-raised-1-43-billion-for-a-shortage-its-own-accounts-do-not-show), [resolved to dissolve RS Precision Devices (Huizhou)](https://www.marketscreener.com/news/rs-precision-devices-co-ltd-dissolves-and-discontinues-automotive-camera-module-business-ce785ddddf88f02c), or RSPDH, the plant taken over from [Sony](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/sony) in December 2024, and cancel the camera-module entry built around it [1].

The shares closed at ¥6,120 on the day of the vote and at ¥5,170 on October 20, roughly 15 percent lower [3][4]. Closing the unit is the right call, and the reason is not that it loses money.

## A profitable unit is being closed anyway

RSPDH kept making optical pickup modules, the laser assemblies that read discs, in a market RS itself describes as contracting, and it was to become the base for camera modules in Chinese cars [1].

RS spent 2025 negotiating to buy the optics maker Jiangxi Shinetech Precision Optical through a subscription for new shares, ended those talks on July 24, and reviewed several other targets; none met its investment criteria [1]. After roughly two years of assessment it judged competition keener, prices worse than modeled, and the profitability it wanted over the medium term unreachable [1].

The unit being dissolved still makes money. It [booked ¥15.2 billion of net sales](https://japanir.jp/en/company/company-3445/ir/3445-20261009-01_wp_corporate_restructuring/) [2]. Ordinary income was ¥1.3 billion, and net income ¥850 million [2]. What RS is closing is a business whose profits rest on a disc market that keeps shrinking, with the camera growth meant to replace it now abandoned [1].

## The capital now follows the wafer chain

AI chips are cut from silicon wafers, and RS has spent 2026 buying more of the chain that turns that demand into revenue [4]. In September it [resolved to take GRITEK](https://japanir.jp/en/company/company-3445/), its Shanghai-listed [prime-wafer subsidiary](https://theinference.org/article/wafer-prices-are-set-to-jump-40-in-2027-and-sumco-s-president-isn-t-selling), toward full ownership together with large stakes in two Shandong Yuken wafer-materials companies, with completion planned for 2027 [4]. The deal is financed with newly issued shares, so existing shareholders fund the expansion through dilution rather than cash [4].

The year's other moves point the same way: a 60 percent [stake in Anhui Jinglong Semiconductor](https://www.marketscreener.com/news/rs-technologies-to-dissolve-indirect-china-unit-scrap-entry-to-automotive-camera-module-entry-ce785ddfde8efe22) in July, and a prime-wafer plant in Inner Mongolia announced in March [3]. First-half ordinary income rose 26 percent, ahead of sales [4]. AI demand reaches RS only as fast as the company can supply wafers, and capacity is what these purchases address.

## The write-off still has no number

Shareholders hold an extraordinary loss with no figure attached yet [2]. Operations stop at the end of December, liquidation completes in May 2027, and third-quarter results on November 12 give the first chance to size it [2][3]. The fall has landed on shares that were up 62 percent for the year on the day of the vote [3].

The size of that fall suggests investors are charging for the lost years and the unsized write-off rather than for the pivot itself, since wafer earnings were strong in the first half and the news since the vote is the exit and the loss it triggers [4].

The redirect is right: every model trained and every datacenter built pulls demand down the chain to purified silicon, and RS now sits across more of it. Holders pay at both ends, a write-off on the way out and newly issued shares on the way in. Whether AI demand absorbs the new capacity is the projection still standing; the exit is fact, and its price lands on November 12.

## Takeaway

RS Technologies sacrificed a profitable legacy optical plant and absorbed a share selloff to concentrate every yen of capital and equity dilution on the prime silicon wafers driving AI hardware.
