# Salesforce paid $3.6 billion for Fin, and $200 million of its August guidance raise came from acquisitions

> Salesforce closed a $3.6 billion purchase of Fin, the Irish agent startup that claims 12,000 paying customers, against $15.2 billion of trailing free cash flow. Two thirds of its August guidance raise came from acquisitions it had not yet closed.

Eoghan McCabe kept his CEO title and, in his words, "literally magnitudes more resources," when [Salesforce](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/salesforce) completed its [$3.6 billion purchase of Fin, signed June 15](https://techcrunch.com/2026/06/15/salesforce-acquires-ai-customer-service-platform-fin-for-3-6b/) and closed September 10, 2026 [1][2][3]. Fin, formerly Intercom, is the Irish customer-agent maker now inside Salesforce's AI Labs, complementing the Agentforce platform; Marc Benioff did the ranking himself, ["The #1 customer agent meets the #1 CRM"](https://diginomica.com/are-you-ready-fully-agentic-world-ready-or-not-its-just-around-corner-according-salesforces-latest) [2][4]. The bill lands on the shareholders funding it, down 14.7 percent this year on the fear that AI agents eat software seats [5].

## The check barely dents the cash machine

The price is about a quarter of the $15.2 billion in free cash flow Salesforce generated over the trailing twelve months, a pool that has grown from $7.6 billion three years ago, against net debt of $30.3 billion at 1.8 times EBITDA [5].

[Sierra](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/sierra), another AI agent startup, says it is raising at a valuation above $15 billion, a round mark, not a price paid [7]. Benioff paid under a quarter of that number for Fin, which claims 12,000 paying agent customers, 30,000 customer companies overall and a 76 percent average resolution rate, all company-claimed [1][4].

## Two thirds of the guidance raise is bought

At signing, Salesforce said it [expected no change to fiscal 2027 guidance](https://www.marketscreener.com/news/salesforce-inc-completed-the-acquisition-of-fin-ce785bded080f021) and no impact on capital returns [3]. On August 26 it [raised that guidance to $46.1–46.4 billion](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/salesforce-q2-earnings-call-focuses-140000568.html) anyway: a $300 million constant-currency lift, $100 million organic and $200 million from Contentful and Fin, neither deal closed that day, offset by a $100 million FX headwind [6].

No public filing separates Fin's share of that $200 million, and Fin's own revenue has never been disclosed [3]. [Listen Labs](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/listen-labs), a customer-research agent startup, [followed on September 29 at a reported $2 billion](https://thenextweb.com/news/salesforce-fin-acquisition-closed-listen-labs-2bn-talks), after Contentful and m3ter in June [3][4].

*Chart: **Acquisitions supply two thirds of the guidance raise** Bar chart of the fiscal 2027 guidance raise: organic 0.1, Contentful plus Fin 0.2, FX headwind minus 0.1 billion dollars.*

*Components of the August 26, 2026, raise to fiscal 2027 revenue guidance, stated by president and CFO Robin Washington: the $300 million constant-currency lift ($100 million organic plus $200 million from Contentful and Fin) offset by a $100 million FX headwind nets to the $200 million headline raise; guided figures, not reported results. ## The bear case has not reached the results

CRM is down 14.7 percent this year against the S&P 500's 14.6 percent gain, priced on the fear that AI leaves companies needing less software [5]. The August call argued the opposite: seats up across Sales, Service and Slack, attrition near record lows, net-new order growth the strongest in four years, Agentforce ARR above $1.5 billion [6]. Trefis calls the worry one that ["has yet to materialize in the financial results"](https://www.trefis.com/stock/crm/articles/617812/should-you-buy-salesforce-stock-for-its-cash/2026-10-07) [5].

## The first clean reading is the Q3 print

[Fiscal Q3 closes on October 31](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001108524) [8], and the print lands in early December: coverage of last year's fiscal Q3 report ran on December 5 [3]. The quarter is guided to $11.42–11.5 billion in revenue [6].

If organic growth does the accelerating, the $3.6 billion was optionality bought cheap. If the acquired $200 million does it, Salesforce is renting its reacceleration, and Fin's sellers got the better end of a check the balance sheet will never notice [6].

## Takeaway

Salesforce's $3.6 billion Fin buy is small against $15.2 billion of trailing free cash flow, but two thirds of its August guidance raise came from acquisitions not yet closed, so the fiscal Q3 print in December is the first clean test of whether the reacceleration is organic or bought.
