# Sam Kovacs sold Nvidia short at $211; a weekly close below $200 is his line for the whole market

> Sam Kovacs of the Babylon Burns letter sold Nvidia short at about $211 into Friday's close, betting the last leaders of the AI trade fall next. His line is a weekly close below $200, and Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon report this week.

Sam Kovacs, who writes the Babylon Burns investing letter, sold [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) short minutes before Friday's October 23 close at about $211, and the trade is not really about Nvidia. [1] It is a bet that the last leaders of the AI trade fall next, and that the indexes they hold up fall with them.

His trigger had just tripped: a weekly close below $212 broke a rising wedge, a pattern of ever-weaker rallies, inside a longer one. [1] He expects $205 or $204 inside a week; the line that matters is a weekly close below $200, Nvidia's first outside the long-term wedge. [1] The short is small, "very low conviction" in his words, with "a good chance it doesn't work". [1]

## The buildout broke first, and the leaders held

His evidence is a sequence, not a forecast, and he has called one of these turns before: [Broadcom](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/broadcom) ran nine times in his book after ChatGPT shipped, and he sold the last piece near $350. [1] [Micron](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/micron), [AMD](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amd), [Cisco](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/cisco) and [Intel](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/intel) sit well below their highs too, and by his count [Lam Research](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/lam-research) and [Applied Materials](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/applied-materials) are down about half. [1]

The month's tape agrees, with [semiconductor stocks down more than 15 percent in October](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/23/next-week-brings-major-risks-for-the-stock-market-just-as-the-ai-trade-keeps-faltering.html). [4] Nvidia, [Amazon](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amazon), [Apple](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/apple) and [Microsoft](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/microsoft) "haven't done much", in his words, so they now carry the indexes, and Microsoft, [Alphabet](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/alphabet) and Amazon alone are [about 15 percent of the S&P 500](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/25/microsoft-alphabet-and-amazon-make-up-about-15-of-the-s-and-p-500-all-3-report-earnings-within-2-days/). [1] [5]

*Chart: **The AI buildout names already sit far below their peaks** Paired bars from peak to October 23 close for five AI buildout names: Micron falls from $1,255 to $877, Broadcom from $495 to $320, AMD from $658 to $516, Intel from $142 to $86, Cisco from $130 to $106.*

*Peak and October 23, 2026, closing levels, in dollars, as Sam Kovacs cited them on Babylon Burns; he also puts Lam Research and Applied Materials down about half. Nvidia closed near $211, the leader he says falls last. [1]*

By his count the seven biggest stocks added nearly as much market cap since the October 2022 low as the other 493 index members combined. [1] When the leaders are the index, the leader's chart is the market's chart, which is why he calls Nvidia the most important chart in markets. [1]

## Capital spending guidance tests the thesis, not the trendlines

[Meta](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/meta) showed what turns a leader last week: its first negative free cash flow since going public, and a record cost to insure its debt. [4] The fear into this week, by [Evercore](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/evercore) analyst Mark Mahaney's estimate, is that the three leaders lift capital spending by as much as $100 billion, after Alphabet sank on a spending forecast hike last quarter. [4] [3]

Kovacs's claim that AI capital spending comes in below projections over the next two or three years is exactly the link a wedge cannot settle. [1] His industrial tell agrees: [GE Aerospace](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/ge-aerospace) beat earnings and guidance forecasts and fell anyway. [1]

The backdrop is his squeeze. [Brent settled near $117 a barrel on Friday](https://financefeeds.com/brent-crude-oil-price-116-72-saturday-week-ahead-houthi-saudi-fed-28-october-bull-120-bear-108/), its highest since April, and the Fed, widely expected to hold on Wednesday, has a December increase priced on energy inflation. [1] [6] [4] Microsoft and Alphabet report on Wednesday October 28, and Amazon on Thursday, the report that also carries the custom-chip challenge to Nvidia we laid out in [Amazon's Trainium can now train AI models, not just run them](https://theinference.org/article/amazon-s-trainium-can-now-train-ai-models-not-just-run-them-testing-nvidia-before-amazon-s-october-29-report). [5]

## Whose money moves if Nvidia loses $200

If that close comes, it is his line for the whole market turning lower by the end of the first quarter. [1] That hop is projection, priced honestly as low conviction. Who pays is plainer: late buyers of the leaders, and index holders, which on his reading is most invested money now that passive accounts hold the majority of assets. [1] Who benefits: shorts, and his energy longs, the biggest bet in his book. [1]

Investor's Business Daily counts [many non-AI stocks flashing buy signals while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq sit below key levels](https://finance.yahoo.com/m/cdb9c13b-db57-3551-acd0-7507e9d69b5a/dow-jones-futures-rise-with.html), a market weighted toward the part that is falling. [2]

What to watch this week is plain: Nvidia's weekly close against $200, and the capital spending guidance from Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon. If the leaders lift spending and their stocks still fall, good news is being sold at the top of the market too, and his sequence is running. That would reprice who funds the AI buildout and at what cost, not whether the models are worth learning to use.

## Takeaway

Kovacs's short is small and self-described as low conviction, but its claim is large: the AI trade's last leaders turn next, and this week's capex guidance from Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon is the test a trendline cannot settle.
