# SAP's first €10 billion quarter shows the AI agent adds to the seat instead of replacing it

> SAP's first-ever €10 billion quarter looks like a rebuttal of the AI-disruption trade, but the fine print shows the agent is still a migration sweetener and an internal cost line, not a priced product.

[SAP](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/sap) crossed €10 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time and current cloud backlog rose 26% at constant currencies to €24.1 billion, and the quarter answers the question our "Seat" piece set up: so far, [the agent adds to the seat instead of replacing it](https://theinference.org/article/atlassian-s-human-owner-rule-for-ai-agents-is-also-how-the-seat-bill-survives) [1]. But the answer is hidden in the fine print, and it is not the one either camp wants [2].

## What actually drove the record was ERP migration, not priced agents

Cloud ERP Suite grew 28% at constant currencies and is now 89% of cloud revenue [2]. SAP itself discloses that cloud growth got a lift from "[a multi-quarter revenue catch-up from customers returning from financial distress](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/sap-quarterly-statement-q3-2026-302915956.html)," plus €49 million from recent acquisitions [1].

And where is the AI? Nine of SAP's fifty largest deals included AI and Business Data Cloud, not a priced agent product [2]. Joule, SAP's agent platform, is a migration sweetener that makes the RISE business case better, as Klein puts it, not a separate revenue line [1].

The most revealing number is internal: [Joule Desktop is live for more than 110,000 SAP employees](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/sap-sap-said-q3-earnings-010300971.html) with 20% productivity gains in central functions, and SAP books the payoff as up to €3 billion of efficiency gains over two years [2]. The agent's biggest customer so far is SAP itself, and the value shows up as costs avoided, not revenue billed [2].

*Chart: **The cloud line grows 25% while every legacy seat line shrinks** Bars showing constant-currency year-over-year revenue growth by line in SAP's Q3 2026: cloud up 25%, services down 5%, software support down 6%, software licenses down 9%.*

*Year-over-year growth at constant currencies, Q3 2026 vs Q3 2025, per SAP's quarterly statement. Negative bars are the legacy seat lines eroding as customers migrate to cloud. [1]*

## The erosion is real, and SAP is pricing it in slowly

Software support revenue fell 6% at constant currencies, licenses fell 9%, and SAP guides the support decline to accelerate as customers transform to the cloud [1]. That is the seat model shrinking on SAP's own schedule, through RISE contracts rather than cent-per-task displacement.

So the money, for now, comes from ERP customers committing to RISE migrations, which is what the €24.1 billion backlog actually is [1]. Q4 holds roughly half of annual bookings, and Asam calls it decisive [2].

The print supports staying long the seat incumbents near term, and hands the short camp a watch list: a separately priced Joule, and the guided acceleration of the support decline [2]. I remain firmly pro-AI, and agents will change how work gets done; the open question is who prices the agent, and SAP has so far chosen to keep it inside the seat.

## Takeaway

SAP's record quarter was built on RISE migration economics, not priced AI: Joule sweetens the seat and cuts SAP's own costs, while the legacy support line erodes on schedule.
