# Short sellers hold 32.18% of SailPoint's float as insiders sell $18.1 million and buy nothing

> Short interest reached 32.18% of SailPoint's float on September 30, days after Cantor, Baird and Oppenheimer lifted their targets to $25 and above. The insider ledger runs the other way: 52 open-market sales in six months, zero purchases, and Dragoneer and Millennium out entirely.

Short sellers held 26,195,871 [SailPoint](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/sailpoint) shares on September 30, 32.18% of the float and a 26.65% build in two weeks, with 5.01 days of trading volume needed to unwind the position [1][2]. Days later the sell side moved the other way: [Cantor Fitzgerald lifted its target to $27 on October 9](https://www.benzinga.com/quote/SAIL/price-targets), Baird to $25 a day earlier, and Oppenheimer started coverage at $30 on October 7 [3]. The October 9 close of $20.77 sits about 10% below the street's $23 average target [2][3].

## A crowded short meets a raising street

Two camps now hold the same facts and opposite conclusions. On one side, 26.2 million borrowed shares against an $11.4 billion market cap [1][2]. On the other, a ratings board where 17 of 24 analysts say Buy and the average target sits at $23 [3].

## Every agent needs a gatekeeper, say the bulls

The bull case now has a mechanism. "Every AI agent ultimately requires authentication, authorization, monitoring, and heightened governance," Bank of America analyst [Tal Liani wrote on September 18](https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/every-ai-agent-needs-a-gatekeeper-3-cybersecurity-stocks-to-watch/ar-AA2cvuXw), raising his [SailPoint](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0002030781) target to $22 while keeping a Neutral rating [4]. CEO Mark McClain argues the point in public: autonomous agents "[capable of attacking at unprecedented speeds](https://www.crn.com/news/security/2026/sailpoint-ceo-mark-mcclain-when-ai-can-move-thousands-of-times-faster-than-humans-identity-security-is-key)" should mean "a completely different calculus" for identity and security teams [5]. The July quarter gives it numbers: ARR of $1.231 billion, up 25%, with AI-driven products over 30% of net new ARR [6].

## The ledger the targets never address

[Insiders filed 52 open-market sales in six months and zero purchases](https://www.quiverquant.com/news/SailPoint+Stock+Short+Interest+Rises+to+32.18%25) [1]. McClain alone sold 430,703 shares for an estimated $7.75 million; the seven officers who filed took out about $18.1 million combined [1]. A price target is an opinion; a Form 4 is a receipt.

Alongside them, 13F filings show Dragoneer sold all 8,000,000 shares and Millennium all 2,848,360 in the second quarter, both 100% exits [1]. The economics lean the same way: [July-quarter revenue of $308.8 million grew 16.8%, against 33.1% a year earlier](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0002030781) [8], the GAAP net loss widened to $50.36 million from $10.55 million [7], and free cash flow fell to $37.4 million from $46.0 million [6].

## Institutions leaned in while insiders leaned out

The selling was not unanimous. Filings show 161 institutions added shares in the latest quarter while 87 trimmed [1], and 31 hedge funds held the stock at the end of Q2, up from 25 three months earlier [6]. Nothing on file says why any insider sold; taxes and diversification fit the same filings doubt does.

## Two prints settle it: October's short interest and the cash test

The mid-October short-interest print is one; SailPoint's own cash test is the other, roughly $130 million of second-half free cash flow implied by its $200 million guide [6]. If [agents make identity the control plane](https://theinference.org/article/okta-more-than-tripled-on-the-agent-boom-its-ceo-calls-that-revenue-too-small-to-show-up), shorts owe the market five days of buying [1]. If the loss keeps widening, the buyers near $23 pay instead [3].

## Takeaway

Short interest reached 32.18% of SailPoint's float on September 30 while seven officers filed 52 sales and no buys, and three brokers lifted targets to $25 or more; the October short-interest print and the second-half cash test decide who pays.
