# SK hynix hands Onto Innovation its sole technology award as RBC sizes $30 billion of equipment spending

> SK hynix's chief executive gave Onto Innovation the sole technology prize at his Partners Day for the inspection tool that catches hidden cracks in HBM stacks before bonding destroys them. RBC puts the tool spending behind that position at about $30 billion, mostly arriving in late 2027 and 2028; Onto's December 17 analyst event is the first date that can price the gap.

[SK hynix](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/sk-hynix) chief executive Noh-Jung Kwak handed one supplier, [Onto Innovation](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/onto-innovation), the sole technology award at his Partners Day on September 28: the Massachusetts process-control company's Dragonfly G5 finds hidden cracks in high-bandwidth memory stacks before bonding turns a 16-die package into scrap [1][2]. [Onto announced it on October 12](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20261012570961/en/) with no contract value, and SK hynix has posted no notice of its own [2]. The prize establishes that SK hynix depends on the tool, not what it has bought.

## Why the yield fight moved to the inspection line

Every generation of high-bandwidth memory, the stacked DRAM that feeds AI accelerators, grinds its dies thinner and stacks more of them. Wafer thinning and thermocompression bonding leave micro-cracks that ordinary surface scans miss, and by the time a defect shows at [final electrical test](https://theinference.org/article/advantest-and-teradyne-test-the-world-s-ai-memory-three-rivals-just-tested-them), sixteen premium dies are already scrap [2].

SK hynix, [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia)'s primary HBM supplier, is ramping 12-high stacks now with 16-high in design verification [2]. TrendForce, a market-research firm, expects HBM demand to grow by more than 50 percent by 2027 [1]. Onto launched the G5 in March and ran the joint engineering SK hynix credited to its product teams [1]; [Dragonfly inspection revenue rose 30 percent sequentially in the June quarter](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/onto-stock-126-more-upside-114300233.html) [3].

## The spending is sized, the order book is not

Analysts at RBC size the next leg. The bank expects memory makers to move the HBM base die, the logic wafer a DRAM stack sits on, onto advanced nodes for speed and lower power; Samsung has already switched, and SK hynix and [Micron](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/micron), the other two big HBM makers, are expected to follow [4]. That shift needs [about $30 billion of added wafer-equipment spending, mostly in late 2027 and 2028](https://goldesel.de/aktien/news/kla-aktie-rbc-sieht-starkes-wfe-wachstum-bleibt-aber-bei-sector-perform) [4].

Within that view RBC still splits the field, rating Onto Outperform, a buy, while holding [KLA](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/kla), Onto's larger rival in process-control tools, at Sector Perform, a hold [4]. KLA has already raised its forecast for packaging process-control revenue to about $1.1 billion this calendar year, up more than 70 percent [5].

## A record quarter, a first billion in backlog

Onto's own evidence is thinner but real: a record June quarter, [a backlog above $1 billion for the first time in its history](https://www.nasdaq.com/press-release/innovation-reports-2026-second-quarter-results-2026-08-06) [6], and more than $200 million of Dragonfly orders from a single packaging contractor, mostly for 2027 delivery, under an HBM volume purchase agreement [3].

*Chart: **Onto's revenue turned sharply higher through 2026 to a record June quarter** Line chart of Onto Innovation quarterly revenue from Q3 2023 to Q2 2026, showing a dip through 2025 and a sharp rise to a record in the June 2026 quarter.*

*Quarterly revenue, US$ billions, as reported in Onto Innovation's SEC filings. [9]*

## December 17 is the date that prices the gap

Onto holds about $1.9 billion of cash and short-term investments after [selling zero-coupon convertible notes due 2031](https://www.tradingview.com/news/zacks:36e97e961094b:0-will-onto-innovation-s-cash-balance-fuel-its-next-growth-phase/) [7]. It spent about $720 million of that firepower on a 27 percent stake in Rigaku, the X-ray metrology company [7]. That cushion is what lets Onto keep developing tools while most of the new spending is still more than a year away.

The chain has a missing middle between a proven tool and an order book sized to the spending, and Onto's [analyst event on December 17 at the New York Stock Exchange](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/onto-innovation-opens-registration-december-123000615.html) is the next date that can close it with numbers [8]. Making 16-high stacks manufacturable at volume is the work that earns this money. SK hynix has now said publicly that Onto is doing that work; the orders are what December has to show [1].

## Takeaway

An award from SK hynix proves Onto's inspection tool sits inside the HBM yield fight; the $30 billion RBC sizes behind that position mostly arrives in late 2027 and 2028, and Onto's December 17 analyst event is the first date that can turn the prize into orders.
