# Snowflake named Glean a Cortex AI Gateway customer; Glean launched a rival context layer the same day

> On November 3, Snowflake named Glean a customer of its new agent-governance gateway while Glean launched the independent context layer outside it, and Glean's own private shares sit 36% below where they were a year ago. The question is who collects the enterprise spend on making agents understand the business.

[Glean](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/glean), the private enterprise-search and agent company, spent November 3 being called a customer by its biggest potential rival [1]. [Snowflake's launch release for Cortex AI Gateway](https://www.morningstar.com/news/business-wire/20261103628258/snowflake-helps-enterprises-deploy-ai-agents-with-trusted-business-context-and-built-in-controls), its new control layer for AI agents, names Glean, alongside Kargo, as a company that "relies on Cortex AI Gateway to govern every AI agent across its business" [1].

Hours later, Glean announced it is a launch partner in [Fireworks AI's Frontier Ecosystem](https://www.unite.ai/glean-brings-enterprise-context-to-fireworks-ais-frontier-ecosystem/), the independent path where Fireworks serves the models and Glean supplies the company knowledge, permissions and governance [2]. Customer and competitor, in the same news cycle.

## One governed answer, or a layer above every tool

[Snowflake](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/snowflake)'s pitch at its Expedition 2026 event is that agent failures come from fractured context, not weak models [1]. Its new Business Ontology lets an enterprise approve one official definition of, say, net revenue, assign it an owner, and force every agent to return it [1].

A Snowflake-sponsored MIT Technology Review survey of 400 senior executives puts numbers on the pain: 55% cite lack of business context as the primary cause of low-quality agent insights, 45% cite fragmented data [1]. That context layer is exactly the business Glean sells, which is why Glean's answer landed the same day: model choice revisable per workload, context and permissions held above any single platform [2].

## The market is already voting on the standalone layer

Glean's last primary round was a [$150 million Series F at a $7.2 billion valuation](https://www.securities.io/buy-glean/) in June 2025, up from $4.6 billion in September 2024 and $2.2 billion in February 2024 [3]. It reports $200 million-plus in annual recurring revenue, 27 billion documents indexed across more than 100 connectors, and 20 trillion annualized tokens, all company-reported figures [3].

But [its private-market shares have fallen 36% in a year](https://biztoc.com/x/d8db798111dfa8ea) while public search rival [Elastic](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/elastic) gained 18% [4]. Public buyers are paying up for platform-bundled search and marking down the standalone vendor's paper.

## Where Glean goes from here

The exit math narrows too. Legal AI consolidation is running hot: [Harvey made its fifth acquisition of 2026 this week](https://www.nonbillable.co.uk/news/harveys-latest-legal-ai-buy-adds-to-acquisition-wave), buying search startup Aida, co-founded by a Glean co-founder, and rival [Legora](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/legora) also completed five deals [5].

[Harvey](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/harvey) raised $550 million at a $15.5 billion valuation in September [5]. Glean was not the prize; a small Glean-adjacent search team was. Snowflake bundles context and governance into a platform more than 14,500 customers already pay for [1]; Glean must prove its layer is worth a separate subscription in every tool [3]. The tell to watch: whether Glean's next disclosure shows agent deployments and net retention strong enough to reprice that 36% discount, or pushes it toward a sale [1][3].

Deep dive below for the full funding history and the Snowflake release text.

## Takeaway

Snowflake named Glean a customer of Cortex AI Gateway on November 3; hours later Glean launched an independent context layer with Fireworks AI, and its private shares trade 36% below a year ago as the market bets platform-bundled context beats the standalone layer.
