# Snowflake shipped AI spending caps as a 13% drop priced in Amazon's and Oracle's capex

> The company that bills customers by consumption published its first agent counts and shipped the caps that stop runaway agent bills. Investors spooked by other people's AI capex took the stock down 13% in a week, three weeks before a December 2 report.

## A 13% drop with no bad news of its own

[Snowflake](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/snowflake)'s stock [fell 13% in the week to November 2](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/snowflake-just-dropped-13-week-090718818.html), and every piece of the bad news belonged to somebody else: [Amazon](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amazon)'s trailing free cash flow swung to a $42.4 billion outflow as AI pushed its capital spending up $94.8 billion, and [Oracle](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/oracle) filed to raise $20 billion for its buildout [3]. Snowflake rents its computing rather than building it. Capex took just 2.2% of revenue in the fiscal year to January 2026 [3]. Its next report lands [after the close on December 2](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/snowflake-announce-financial-results-third-140000170.html), covering the quarter ended October 31 [7].

## The first hard agent counts

At Expedition 2026 on November 3, Snowflake [published adoption numbers for its agents](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/snowflake-coco-cowork-power-agentic-140600084.html) for the first time: CoCo, the coding agent for data teams, runs in more than 9,100 accounts; CoWork, the work agent for knowledge workers, in more than 5,800; inside a customer base above 14,500 enterprises [1]. Product revenue hit $1.49 billion in the July quarter, up 37% [3], and total revenue growth has sped up three quarters in a row after bottoming a year ago [6].

*Chart: **Snowflake's growth slowed through 2025, then sped up three quarters running** Line chart of year-over-year total revenue growth for Snowflake across six fiscal quarters, rising from 25.7% in Q1 fiscal 2025 to 35.1% in Q2 fiscal 2026 with the last three quarters each higher than the one before.*

## The complication: it sells the brake too

Snowflake bills by consumption, so every agent minute rings its meter. At the same event it [shipped the cap on that meter](https://www.snowflake.com/en/news/press-releases/expedition-2026-business-ontology-ai-gateway/). The Cortex AI Gateway attributes AI spend to each user, team and agent, and enforces hard limits that stop runaway agents before they break budgets [2]. The release names the fear directly: a single ungoverned connection or unexpected bill can pause an entire AI program [2].

Always-on Bots, still in private preview, and generally available Automations feed the meter [1]. Dynamic model routing sends routine work to cheaper models [2]. The gateway is built to cap what agents burn, and Snowflake profits either way.

## What the numbers say

The selloff cut the stock to 121 times forward earnings against a three-year average of 165 [3]. Contracted backlog slipped from $9.77 billion in January to $9.00 billion in July, still 30% up on the year [3]. Management trimmed the product gross margin guide to 74% from 75%, so the AI bill reaches Snowflake through costs, not capex [3].

*Chart: **The selloff pushed Snowflake's forward P/E below its three-year average** Bars chart of Snowflake's forward P/E: 165x three-year average, 134x on October 27 and 121x on November 2, with the November 2 bar highlighted.*

## The counterpoint: credible design, thin proof

Independent analysts [called the architecture credible but short on proof at production scale](https://www.techtarget.com/news/latest-snowflake-blast-targets-trust-in-ai-and-efficient-development/873518/), and noted [Databricks](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/databricks), [Microsoft](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/microsoft), [SAP](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/sap) and [Salesforce](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/salesforce) are racing for the same control plane [4] [5]. A Snowflake-sponsored survey of 400 executives puts missing business context first, at 55%, among causes of low-quality agent insights [2]. One analyst caution cuts against the whole pitch: sandboxing limits the damage a faulty agent can do, it does not check that the agent's output is right [8].

## December 2 decides

The guide implies about $1.65 billion of January-quarter product revenue, a bar Snowflake has cleared by more than 5% above the top of its guide for two straight quarters [3] ([The Inference framed this guide as the test in October](https://theinference.org/article/snowflake-s-coco-agent-passed-9-100-accounts-and-its-cfo-says-counting-it-in-guidance-would-be-reckless)). The question now is whether governed agents convert those 9,100 accounts into consumption faster than the caps and cheap-model routing shrink each bill [3]. An enterprise that can cap an agent's bill lets more agents run. That is Snowflake's bet, and December 2 is the reading [3].

## Takeaway

Snowflake's 13% drop was priced off Amazon's and Oracle's capex, not its own: it rents compute and capex is 2.2% of revenue, and it just shipped the AI spending caps that make agent consumption bankable. December 2's report tests whether governed agents grow the bill faster than the caps shrink it.
