# SoundHound grew revenue 48.5% to $62.4 million, but December must show $80 million of cuts

> SoundHound's record quarter hid the real news: it is trading upfront license accounting for hosted revenue while widening losses, and the December quarter must show the first $80 million of cost cuts and roughly $81.5 million of revenue to keep the story alive.

[SoundHound AI](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/soundhound-ai) (NASDAQ: SOUN), the voice-AI software maker, just posted record third-quarter revenue of $62.4 million, up 48.5% year over year, and the stock fell 7-8% anyway [1][4]. The market is no longer paying for revenue booked at signing; it is pricing revenue that is actually earned, and SoundHound's own accounting change is the reason. The company is doing the right thing, but the December quarter is the first test of whether the change holds. [1][4]

Here is the mechanic. An upfront license deal books years of a contract's revenue on day one, while the customer pays over time. SoundHound is moving those customers into hosted contracts that bill as the service runs, [which CFO John Collins calls "improving our quality of earnings"](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/soundhound-sinks-8-gives-upfront-183556785.html) [1][4].

## The cost shows up in what is booked but not billed

The cost shows in the pile of revenue booked but not yet billable: $47.9 million at September 30, up from $29.9 million at the end of 2025 [1][4]. That is why [Q3 revenue of $62.4 million](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001840856) barely topped Q2's $61.9 million even with four weeks of LivePerson, the conversational-software company it bought on September 4, inside the results [1][2]. The 2027 guide of $350-400 million sits below the $390 million analysts wanted, and the TIKR piece expects those estimates to come down [1].

*Chart: **Revenue growth stalled in the record quarter** Line chart of SoundHound's quarterly revenue from Q4 2025 through Q3 2026: $55.1 million, $44.2 million, $61.9 million and $62.4 million, showing growth stalling in Q3 despite four weeks of LivePerson.*

*SoundHound AI quarterly revenue, $ millions, Q4 2025 to Q3 2026, from its SEC filings [5] and Q3 2026 results coverage [1]. Q3 2026 includes about four weeks of LivePerson, acquired September 4, 2026. [1][5]*

## The quarter got worse underneath

[Adjusted EBITDA loss widened to $20.7 million from $14.5 million](https://www.tradingview.com/news/gurufocus:0e7a393d2094b:0-soundhound-ai-s-record-quarter-comes-with-a-big-catch/), and non-GAAP gross margin fell to 50.3% from 59.3% [4]. The company used [$96 million of operating cash in nine months](https://sg.finance.yahoo.com/news/soundhound-ai-soun-stock-price-011914901.html) [3][4]. It holds $207.6 million, so the cushion is real but not open-ended. [3][4]

The case now compresses into one testable claim. Of $120 million in annualized cost cuts, [more than $80 million must be effective before January 1](https://www.tradingview.com/news/zacks:af16f0497094b:0-soundhound-s-liveperson-deal-could-reshape-its-path-to-profitability/) [2]. And Q4 revenue needs about $81.5 million to reach the 2026 guide of $250-260 million: $250 million minus $168.5 million booked in the first nine months, so this figure is computed from the quarterly reports, not reported [2]. If the cuts do not show up in the December results, the cash starts funding the gap instead of the transition. [2]

## Who wins while SoundHound cleans house

The contracts SoundHound exits for losing money need a home, and NiCE (NASDAQ: NICE), its rival in customer-service software, is the obvious one: NiCE's AI annual recurring revenue climbed 46% to $392 million last quarter [1]. Watch NiCE's next customer calls for SoundHound castoffs. If the first $80 million of cuts lands on schedule, last week's sellers punished an honest restatement; if it does not, the cash burn becomes the story. [1]

## Takeaway

SoundHound's record Q3 hides an accounting shift toward earned revenue and widening losses; December must show $80 million of cost cuts and about $81.5 million of revenue, or the $207.6 million cash pile starts funding the gap.
