# SpaceX is now half an AI company, and Starlink is paying for it

> Super Intelligence passed half of revenue and swung to its first reported operating profit, $431 million, in a quarter that consumed $16.4 billion of segment capex. The AI buildout is being carried by Starlink's subscription cash and a post-IPO balance sheet, while each subscriber pays less than a year ago.

## The beat changed what SpaceX is

[SpaceX](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/spacex)'s [second earnings report](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1181412/000162828026066482/0001628280-26-066482-index.htm) as a public company beat every line that matters, and it moved the company's center of gravity. Revenue was $14.6 billion, up 161%, with net income of $4.4 billion [1]. The $0.35 a share earned beat a $0.16 consensus, and the stock added 1.5% in extended trading [2].

More than half of that revenue, $7.6 billion, came from Super Intelligence, the segment renamed from Artificial Intelligence, which swung to its first reported operating profit, $431 million, even after absorbing $1.2 billion of Cursor share compensation [1]. Nameplate compute reached 1.7 gigawatts [1]. This is the report [our October 20 preview](https://theinference.org/article/spacex-s-ai-revenue-is-set-to-more-than-double-to-6-47-billion-on-turbines-a-clean-air-act-suit-could-shut) set up.

*Chart: **Super Intelligence is now more than half of SpaceX's revenue** Pie chart of SpaceX's third-quarter revenue by segment: Super Intelligence 7.6 billion dollars, Connectivity 5.2 billion dollars, all other segments 1.8 billion dollars*

*Revenue by segment in Q3 2026, in billions of dollars. Super Intelligence and Connectivity as reported in the Q3 2026 earnings release; all other segments is the remainder of the $14.6 billion total. [1]*

## The profit arrived inside a construction site

The same tables price the inflection. SI capex was $16.4 billion in the quarter, and across nine months it ran 3.6 times the segment's own revenue [1]. Whole-company capex, $19.6 billion, was more than twice the quarter's $8.8 billion of adjusted EBITDA [1].

What converts that spend into sales is specific: newly activated cloud services agreements, [Cursor](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/anysphere)'s $608 million of revenue since the August 14 close, and Grok adoption among enterprise customers and consumers [1]. The Google and [Anthropic](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/anthropic) cloud deals were set to start ramping late in the quarter or in October [3]. Grok Bot, the always-on agentic system, is the application layer the compute is being bought for [1].

## Starlink is the printer, and each subscriber pays less

Connectivity, the Starlink segment, is the printer: the subscription business whose cash funds the AI build, the furnace. Its operating income reached $2.4 billion, up 99%, on revenue of $5.2 billion [1].

It earned that on 13.6 million consumer subscribers, nearly double a year ago, each paying $69 a month against $83 [1]. The base grows while the price per subscriber falls. Add $85.7 billion of net IPO proceeds and tens of billions in fresh debt [1], and a subscription franchise plus a post-IPO balance sheet are funding a buildout that does not yet fund itself.

## What the beat leaves unpriced

The [800 MHz spectrum agreement signed on October 8](https://satnews.com/2026/10/11/spacex-acquires-grain-managements-800-mhz-spectrum-portfolio-to-launch-standalone-starlink-mobile-carrier/), a nationwide low-band portfolio of up to 14 megahertz paired, carries no price in the release and is expected to close in the first half of 2027 [1]. [Reporting put the deal near $8 billion in cash](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/t-mobile-tmus-faces-spacex-153114542.html), for airwaves T-Mobile swapped to Grain Management in August, and it knocked 13.2% off [T-Mobile](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/t-mobile-us) the day it surfaced [4][5]. [We weighed that price on October 15](https://theinference.org/article/spacex-agreed-to-pay-a-reported-8-billion-for-spectrum-t-mobile-sold-for-2-9-billion-in-august).

## The bears' case, and the metric that answers it

The soft spots the beat does not touch are the ones bears had already named: Starlink's falling ARPU and the capital consumption of the AI build [6]. Those concerns had held the stock 7.7% below its June IPO price into the print [7]. CFO Bret Johnsen's answer is what the release calls building "the infrastructure of the future with discipline" [1].

The deciding number next quarter is revenue per gigawatt, the metric analysts flagged going in [3]. If the compute added beyond these 1.7 gigawatts [1] earns more revenue per gigawatt than the first tranche did, Starlink can stop carrying the buildout.

## Takeaway

Super Intelligence is now more than half of SpaceX's revenue and posted its first reported operating profit, but the segment's $16.4 billion of quarterly capex shows the build is still being paid for elsewhere. Revenue per gigawatt next quarter decides whether Starlink has to keep carrying the AI buildout.
