# Spotify's $5 AI remix tier is behind schedule as Sony and Warner stay unsigned, the FT reports

> The Financial Times says the AI remix add-on, $4 to $5 a month from early 2027, is behind schedule because artists will not opt in, and producer Jermaine Dupri is telling musicians to set the fee themselves. Investors are paying 37.5 times forward earnings for a product with no first dollar until 2027.

[Spotify](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/spotify) wants a second monthly fee for music its subscribers already rent. From the first quarter of 2027, [a $4 to $5 add-on to Premium](https://www.ecoustics.com/news/spotify-ai-remix-price-2027/) would let fans use generative AI to remix songs or generate covers in another artist's style, with an announcement possibly timed to the February Grammys [1][2]. Some outlets priced the optional add-on as making Premium [up to 39 percent more expensive](https://www.notebookcheck.net/Spotify-reportedly-plans-up-to-39-price-increase-in-big-AI-push.1440112.0.html) [3].

The complication: the launch is slipping, and the reason is consent. [The Financial Times reports](https://www.heise.de/en/news/AI-generated-remixes-Spotify-plans-reportedly-delayed-by-artists-11507502.html) progress is slower than planned because major contemporary artists are resisting, even as some established acts agree; Olivia Rodrigo said in October she would never use AI in her music [2]. [Sony](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/sony) Music and Warner Music remain unsigned; [Universal, Merlin, Kobalt and Believe have signed](https://routenote.com/blog/spotifys-ai-remix-tool/), and even a label deal leaves each artist a second opt-in [1][4].

## Jermaine Dupri tells artists to name their own price

On October 31, producer Jermaine Dupri [called on musicians to set their own fee and choose which records are used](https://allhiphop.com/news/jermaine-dupri-demands-spotify-pay-artists-for-ai-remixes-cut-us-in/), pointing to Spotify's $21.85 billion in scheduled revenue this year: "THEY GOTTA CUT US IN" [5].

## The cost of consent is already in the numbers

[Third-quarter operating expenses rose 26% to €967 million](https://theinference.org/article/spotify-raised-prices-and-subscribers-stayed-arpu-up-9-3-with-december-churn-as-the-real-test), partly on AI computing, and free cash flow fell 9% to €735 million, even as gross margin hit a record 33.0% and operating income reached €672 million [6][7]. Bernstein analyst Ian Moore estimates only 7% to 8% of paying US subscribers would take the tier by end-2028 [2], so none of it lands in the February 2 report, which [demands 316 million subscribers, €5.2 billion of revenue and €820 million of operating income](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/spotify-33-six-months-profits-232203892.html) [6].

*Chart: **Spotify's February 2 bar: Q4 guidance asks for more than Q3 delivered** Grouped columns comparing Spotify's Q3 2026 actual revenue of €4.97 billion and operating income of €672 million with Q4 2026 guidance of €5.2 billion and €820 million, showing the step-up investors must see on February 2.*

*€ billions, Spotify Technology (SPOT), Q3 2026 actuals reported October 22, 2026; Q4 2026 figures are company guidance, shown dashed as estimates. Sources: [6][7]. [6][7]*

*Chart: **Revenue kept climbing through 2026 while operating income stalled** Line chart of Spotify's quarterly revenue and operating income from Q4 2023 through Q3 2026 in US dollars: revenue climbs from $4.1 billion to $5.6 billion while operating income falls from $828 million in Q1 2026 to $761 million in Q3 2026.*

*US dollars, Spotify's quarterly figures from its SEC filings, retrieved November 2, 2026. Free cash flow fell 12% year over year in Q3 2026. Source: [8]. [8]*

The bull case says AI remixes widen what a subscription is worth; the bears note shareholders pay 37.5 times forward earnings for a product with no first dollar until 2027, whose margin is GPU cost against a $5 fee the artists now want to divide [6]. Watch the February 2 print [6].

## Takeaway

The $4 to $5 AI remix add-on has no firm launch because artists, not labels, hold the opt-in: Sony and Warner are unsigned and Jermaine Dupri wants each artist to name their own fee. Q3 already shows the cost of AI computing, and the tier adds no revenue until 2027 while the stock trades at 37.5 times forward earnings.
