# Spotify's QR check can turn a $3.67 family seat into a $12.99 subscription

> A rotating QR code on the payer's phone now guards Premium Family: seven days to scan it, then a 12-month lockout from Family and Duo plans. Spotify reports third-quarter results on October 22 and has never said how many seats face the check.

## A code on the payer's phone

[Spotify](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/spotify) now requires some Premium Family members to prove they live with the plan manager, the person who pays for the plan, by scanning a QR code on that person's phone. Both must be in the same place, the code changes every few seconds, and the member has 7 days from the notification [1][2]. Miss it, and no other Family or Duo plan for 12 months [2].

One parent, commenting under [9to5Google](https://9to5google.com/2026/10/19/spotify-qr-code-verification-family-sharing/)'s October 19 report, put the edge case in one line: "This sucks for when my kid goes to college [1]. His legal address is my home but he wont be able to make it back within a week." [1]

## $3.67 a seat, until the check asks $12.99

[US Premium Family costs $21.99 a month for up to six accounts](https://www.spotify.com/us/premium/), about $3.67 a seat at full occupancy, against $12.99 for one Individual plan [3][4]. A sharer who buys Individual pays $9.32 more per listener a month, arithmetic on those two prices [5]. A member pushed to the ad-supported tier earns Spotify about 90 euro cents a quarter, on Q2 advertising revenue of €446 million across 494 million ad-supported listeners [5].

The cash caveat matters: the family keeps paying $21.99 whether it holds five members or six, so a member lost to free costs Spotify no subscription cash. The $9.32 is the list-price value of a converted listener, not a booked delta, and Spotify has never said how many seats are shared.

## The page never says what failure costs

[Spotify's QR section lists two consequences](https://support.spotify.com/us/article/family-address-verification/): the 12-month lockout, and "choose a different plan [2]." It never says the member loses Premium [2]. 9to5Google reports missed windows leave members "[automatically pushed down to the free plan](https://9to5google.com/2026/10/19/spotify-qr-code-verification-family-sharing/)," wording that matches the address-verification rules elsewhere on the same support page, not the QR text [1][2]. Enforcement stays porous either way: users clear the scan over a video call using a second device [1][4]. And the page that promises of address checks "We don't track your location" says nothing about what the scan itself records [2].

## What to count on October 22

Third-quarter results land before the open. [Consensus is $3.15 of non-GAAP earnings per share on $5.59 billion of revenue](https://seekingalpha.com/news/4655166-spotify-q3-preview-can-monetization-magic-outweigh-valuation-risks) [6]. Guidance implies 305 million Premium subscribers, about 5 million net additions in the quarter [7]. The line to watch is ARPU, average revenue per user: Spotify has never said how many members get the check, so its effect cannot be modeled from the documents. Gross margin, at a record 33.4% in Q2, is guided down to 32.9%; [Jefferies](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/jefferies) models 33.1% [8][10].

*Chart: **Gross margin is up more than four points in two years; guidance calls Q3 down a notch** Line chart of Spotify's quarterly gross margin from Q2 2024 to Q2 2026 as reported, rising from 29.2% to a record 33.4%, with the final point showing Q3 2026 guidance of 32.9% marked as an estimate.*

*Reported quarterly gross margin, percent of revenue, from Spotify's SEC filings; the final point is company guidance for Q3 2026, marked as an estimate. [8][10]*

[A fresh $1.5 billion of buyback authorization](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/spotify-renewed-joe-rogan-added-140740564.html), about $2.22 billion in total, sits under a stock down 9% this year [6][7]. The other lever, a paid AI remix add-on licensed with Universal in May, Merlin and Kobalt in August, and [Believe on October 20](https://allhiphop.com/news/spotifys-ai-remix-push-gives-indie-artists-two-chances-to-say-no/), still carries no price and no launch date, and Jefferies puts no AI revenue in its forecast [8][9]. The QR check has a seven-day fuse; the remix tool has no price at all.

## Takeaway

Spotify's QR check can convert a $3.67 family seat into a $12.99 subscription, but with no disclosure of how many seats face the scan, Q3 ARPU is the only line that will show whether it moved the money.
