# Super Micro raised guidance to $82 billion while Dell's $21.3 billion inventory tests the memory shortage

> Super Micro's $19.9 billion quarter and raised $72 billion to $82 billion outlook say components, power and shells bind AI growth; Dell's balance sheet says the parts were for sale. Dell's November 24 report settles which reading pays.

On November 3 the market heard two accounts of the same memory market [1]. [Super Micro](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/super-micro), the AI server maker, [reported $19.9 billion of quarterly revenue](https://www.tradingkey.com/news/transcripts/262272593-) [1]. It raised its fiscal 2027 outlook to $72 billion to $82 billion, from $65 billion to $72 billion a quarter earlier [1]. Dell's balance sheet, laid out in its July quarter filing, says the parts were available to anyone willing to pay [2]. Both readings can be true if the shortage allocates by balance sheet, and Dell's November 24 report decides which one the trade should believe [1][2].

*Chart: **Super Micro lifted its fiscal 2027 outlook by $7 billion at both ends** Column chart of Super Micro's fiscal 2027 revenue outlook, showing the raised range of 72 to 82 billion dollars against the prior range of 65 to 72 billion dollars.*

## Super Micro says the parts, the power and the shells bind

Gross margin came in at 12.8%, diluted by the mix of large AI deployments [1]. The quarter was profitable on paper and cash-hungry in fact: free cash flow was negative $481 million [1]. Customer prepayments added roughly $3.1 billion to deferred revenue, so the customers largely funded the parts themselves [1]. Management was explicit that demand is not the constraint; orders outrun what components and customer facilities can absorb [1]. The stock had already [fallen 7% on Friday](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/super-micro-fell-7-memory-181041954.html) after [Intel warned that memory prices](https://theinference.org/article/intel-beats-and-guides-december-down-on-memory-costs-and-the-stock-falls-more-than-20-after-hours) and availability are slowing PC demand [3].

*Super Micro's gross margin, percent of revenue, by calendar quarter, from its SEC filings [4]. Customer mix, not component cost, drove the swings. [4]*

## Dell's shelf says the parts were for sale

Dan Niles of the Satori Fund made the glut case from Dell's own filing: [inventory of $21.3 billion at the July quarter-end](https://www.tikr.com/blog/memory-trade-warnings-pile-up-dells-tripled-inventory-says-chip-supply-is-a-lot-closer-to-demand), nearly triple a year earlier, most of it production materials [2]. Suppliers financed the buy, with payables up $16.2 billion in the first half [2].

His point is simple: you cannot shelve $15.9 billion of components if they are truly sold out [2]. Dell's product gross margin rose to 17.3% from 12.1% as it repriced scarce parts, and on Niles's reading that lift fades if supply catches up [2]. Michael Dell still says the memory shortage could run about four years [2].

*Chart: **Both AI server makers now hold roughly triple the inventory of a year ago** Bars chart of inventory in US dollars: Dell 7.2 billion in July 2025 and 21.3 billion in July 2026; Super Micro 4.7 billion in June 2025 and 15.1 billion in September 2026.*

*Inventory, US dollars, billions. Dell: quarter ended July 31, 2026, versus a year earlier. Super Micro: quarter ended September 30, 2026, versus June 30, 2025. Sources: TIKR [2], Super Micro earnings call [1], Yahoo Finance [3]. [1][2][3]*

## Both can be true, because the shortage queues by balance sheet

Nothing in either filing says silicon disappeared. What the pair shows is a shortage that allocates: Dell bought early on supplier credit, Super Micro's creditworthy customers paid in advance, and everyone else waits. Super Micro still reports demand far outstripping component availability [1], so the difference is not whether parts exist but who can pay to stand at the front of the line. The constraint has also moved past chips, to shells, power and land [1]; the builders turning shipped racks into running data centers are earning the value in this build-out.

## November 24 decides which reading pays

If Dell's inventory falls as its $95 billion AI backlog ships, the stockpile was a disciplined hedge and the scarcity camp holds [2]. If it keeps climbing past $21.3 billion, the glut read hardens, and the shortage pricing that has held [NVIDIA](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia)'s gross margin near 75% starts to erode [2]. One line on [Dell's balance sheet](https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0001375365) settles it on November 24 [2].

## Takeaway

Super Micro's raised $72-82 billion outlook and Dell's tripled inventory test whether the memory shortage allocates by balance sheet; Dell's November 24 report settles which reading pays.
