# Taiwan's president weighs into Micron's union strike threat as the stock falls 16% in five days

> The president's public call for \"sincere\" negotiation turns a bonus dispute into a national supply risk, landing on a stock down 16% in five days, with the new Taichung facility's 2027 capacity already sold out.

Taiwan's president has publicly waded into [Micron](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/micron)'s labor dispute, [urging the company and its unions to negotiate "sincerely" ahead of a possible strike](https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/taiwan-president-calls-for-micron-workers-to-negotiate-sincerely-ahead-of-possible-strike/ar-AA2egxYb) [1]. A head of state treating a chipmaker's bonus dispute as national business tells you where the leverage sits: Taiwan is a crucial production hub for the DRAM (the standard memory in servers and PCs) and HBM (high-bandwidth memory, the stacked DRAM in AI accelerators) that AI servers run on [1]. At Thursday's opening of Micron's new Taichung assembly-and-test plant, the company's president and chief operating officer, Manish Bhatia, said the 2027 capacity that factory will build is already sold out [1]. The roughly 15,000 people Micron employs in Taiwan keep that output flowing, and they are the ones threatening to stop it [1]. The warning lands on Micron stock (MU) down 16% over five straight days [3].

## The workers want a share of record profits

Micron runs separate plant-level unions at Taoyuan and Taichung. The Taoyuan union has [secured the legal right to strike with 88.3% member support](https://www.trendforce.com/news/2026/10/08/news-micron-taiwans-taoyuan-union-secures-right-to-strike-with-88-3-support-taichung-mediation-set-for-oct-22/), and Taoyuan's fab primarily makes DRAM, so TrendForce warns that even a short stoppage could disrupt equipment maintenance and process monitoring enough to degrade yields [2]. The Taichung union returns to mediation on October 22 and could move to a strike vote without an agreement [2].

The demand is explicit: profit-sharing tied to 15% of operating profit, plus a one-time bonus the unions estimate at about 83 months of pay per Taiwan employee [2]. That claim is priced off numbers Micron itself reports, with revenue up more than 250% over the past year and an operating margin near 75% [3]. The unions are encouraging members to take a day off on October 19 for a rally in Taipei, which they say will not be a strike [1][2].

## The dip-buyers now have a date to clear

The five-day selloff, which erased about $196 billion from a company still worth about $1 trillion, was mostly about something else: cooling AI sentiment and [Elon Musk's warning that China's ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), already about 8% of global DRAM revenue, will make "a LOT of RAM" in 2028](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/korea-memory-chip-boom-ending-095714374.html) [3][4][5]. Micron slid again on Thursday [4]. Bernstein analyst Mark Newman called the pullback an attractive entry [4], but that call now has to clear the October 19 rally and the October 22 mediation [1][2]. Memory demand is the least of Micron's worries this month; whether it settles with its unions is what sets the stock's near-term path.

The AI demand under this stock is real, and the workers who convert it into chips are claiming the share their record output earned; that is the buildout working as it should, not breaking. Labor is also the one risk in the stack Micron can actually settle, and the dates to watch are already on the calendar.

## Takeaway

Taiwan's president has made Micron's bonus dispute a national issue: the Taoyuan union holds a strike mandate, Taichung mediation resumes October 22, and the dates now set the path for a stock still up 375% in a year.
