# Talen Energy's $1.5 billion buyback meets a 68% jump in short interest as EBITDA nearly doubled

> Talen's quarterly EBITDA nearly doubled and its $1.5 billion accelerated buyback runs into a short position that grew 68% in two weeks, with PJM capacity prices holding both sides of the trade.

[Talen Energy](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/talen-energy), the Houston independent power producer whose Susquehanna nuclear plant in Pennsylvania is central to its operations as it pursues projects for large-scale electricity users including data centers, [reported third-quarter results on November 3, 2026](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/11/03/3394050/0/en/talen-energy-reports-third-quarter-2026-results-reaffirms-2026-guidance-and-introduces-2027-guidance.html), that read like two companies [1][2][3]. Adjusted EBITDA, the cash proxy management runs on, hit $669 million, up $306 million from $363 million a year earlier, and Adjusted Free Cash Flow rose $210 million to $433 million. [1][2][3]

[GAAP net income went the other way, down $69 million to $138 million](https://www.streetinsider.com/Earnings/Talen+Energy+%28TLN%29+Reports+Q3+EPS+of+%242.88/27277233.html), as unrealized mark-to-market losses on hedges and interest on acquisition debt ate the operating gains. [1][3]

## The growth is partly bought, and the market knows it

Talen's Cornerstone acquisition lifted generation to 23.9 terawatt-hours in the quarter from 11.1 a year ago, and capacity revenues more than doubled to $323 million in PJM, the Mid-Atlantic power market where [data-center demand is setting prices](https://theinference.org/article/talen-s-1-920-mw-amazon-headline-meets-a-240-mw-floor-on-november-3). [1] Management introduced 2027 guidance of $2,500 million to $2,850 million in Adjusted EBITDA, about 26% growth at the midpoint versus 2026. [1]

The market is not buying it yet. [Short interest jumped 68.2% between September 30 and October 15](https://www.marketbeat.com/instant-alerts/options-talen-energy-corporation-nasdaq-tln-sees-significant-increase-in-short-interest-2026-11-02/), from 2.50 million to 4.21 million shares, now 8.9% of the company, and shares opened November 2 at $343.12, well below the $458.69 consensus target. ## The buyback is the squeeze, if PJM holds

Here is the collision. On October 1, Talen took delivery of about 3.8 million retired shares under a $1.5 billion accelerated share repurchase, funded by selling rights to roughly $1.5 billion of future PJM capacity cash flows for $1.3 billion in cash, about 87 cents on the dollar. [1] A further $1.5 billion remains authorized through 2028. [1]

At the November 2 open of $343.12, that remaining authorization covers roughly 4.4 million shares, more than the entire short position of 4.21 million. [1][2] The bear's best fact cuts against the bear: management is monetizing capacity upside at a discount to retire stock today, with more than a third of shares outstanding at emergence already repurchased for about $4.0 billion since 2024. [1][2]

## Both camps are betting on one document

The squeeze reading assumes the shorts are wrong on direction; nothing in the record says whether the 68% build is a hedge against long exposure or an outright bet against PJM prices, and that question stays open. [2] What both camps share is the risk: PJM capacity auction prices set the buyback funding and the 2027 numbers alike. [1] Final ASR settlement lands by the end of the first quarter of 2027, 3.1 days to cover sits against it. [1][2] Watch it. [1][2]

## Takeaway

Talen's doubled EBITDA and its PJM-funded buyback are squeezing toward a 4.21 million-share short position that grew 68% in two weeks; both sides are really betting on PJM capacity prices, which set the 2027 guidance and the buyback funding alike.
