# Tesla counts 300 Cybercabs in Austin. The independent tracker counts 105.

> The first official fleet count, plus a named second city, lands 10 days before Q3 earnings and 19 days before Tesla owes NHTSA sworn answers on Cybercab certification.

On Saturday, [Tesla](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/tesla)'s Robotaxi account put [the first official number on the fleet](https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-cybercab-dallas/): "300+ Cybercabs serving Austin," an 8x increase in 30 days [1]. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's head of AI software, quoted the post and added the headline: "Dallas soon," the first city Tesla has named for public Cybercab rides [1]. The count is company-claimed and self-published, and it is the number the bull case now leans on [6].

## Three counts of one fleet

The paper record is clean. [The Texas automated vehicle registry](https://www.techtimes.com/articles/326094/20260831/tesla-registers-first-cybercabs-texas-expands-dallas-robotaxi-zone-50-percent-fsd-v15-builds.htm) shows 7 Cybercabs on August 31 [2], 45 by the September 4 public launch [3], 169 authorized for commercial use by October 3 [5], and 319 after a 150-filing jump on Thursday [1][6]. But [registration is not service](https://theinference.org/article/tesla-s-robotaxi-math-476-registered-8-carrying-riders-one-sworn-deadline) [2]. RobotaxiTracker, which counts vehicles from sightings and state records, [listed 275 in unsupervised service in Austin on Saturday](https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2026/10/tesla-has-over-300-cybercabs-in-austin-and-500-robotaxi-in-austin.html), 105 of them Cybercabs [1][7]. For scale, Waymo has 1,154 autonomous vehicles authorized in Texas and runs more than 500,000 paid rides a week [5].

*Chart: **Tesla posted 300 Cybercabs. The independent tracker sees 105.** Bars comparing three Cybercab counts in Austin on October 10, 2026: 319 registered with Texas DMV, 300 posted by Tesla, 105 counted in unsupervised service by RobotaxiTracker.*

*Cybercab counts in Austin, October 10, 2026. Tesla's figure is a self-published X post, shown at 300 of '300+' and marked as a company claim; the Texas DMV count is registrations, not service; RobotaxiTracker counts vehicles in unsupervised service from sightings and state records. Units: vehicles. [1][6][7]*

*Chart: **Registered Cybercabs grew 45-fold in under six weeks** Line chart of Cybercabs registered in the Texas automated vehicle registry rising from 7 on August 31 to 45 on September 4, 169 on October 3 and 319 on October 8, 2026.*

*Cybercabs in the Texas automated vehicle registry: 7 on August 31, 45 by the September 4 public launch, 169 authorized for commercial use by October 3, and 319 after the 150-filing jump on Thursday, October 8. Registrations, not vehicles in service. Units: vehicles. [1][2][3][5][6]*

## The defense of 300

Tracker counts can lag official numbers, and the demand evidence cuts the other way: Cybercab wait times stayed short Saturday evening even with more than 2,000 fans in town for X Takeover [1]. [Availability jumped from 58 to 125 cabs in a single week in late September](https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-cybercab-fleet-doubles-well-over-100-units/) [4]. The count matters to money, not pride. Tigress Financial's $550 target lists Cybercab robotaxis among five growth drivers [6], and [Goldman Sachs](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/goldman-sachs) argues the robotaxi and FSD outlook will move TSLA more than Q3 earnings per share [9].

## Sworn answers, 19 days out

[NHTSA's Special Order of September 10](https://electrek.co/2026/09/15/nhtsa-tesla-cybercab-special-order-fmvss-certification/) demands sworn answers to 21 requests on how a car with no steering wheel, pedals or mirrors complies with federal standards, including a brake rule written around a foot control [6][8]. The original September 30 deadline slid 30 days, not the November 20 Tesla requested [6]. [Amazon](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amazon)'s Zoox, selling the same no-controls concept, took the Part 555 exemption route, capped at 2,500 vehicles a year through 2028 [8]. Texas asked no such questions: the state lets Tesla self-certify the Cybercab as Level 4 [2].

## The calendar is the verdict

Q3 earnings on October 21 give Tesla a venue to define its fleet numbers and put a date on Dallas [1]. Nine days later, [the sworn answers land](https://theinference.org/article/tesla-must-swear-by-tuesday-why-a-car-with-no-steering-wheel-is-legal) [1][6]. The number underwriting the robotaxi multiple is one only Tesla can see, and October 30 is the first deadline at which anyone can hold it to a standard of proof.

## Takeaway

Tesla's 300 is a self-published claim: the Texas registry shows 319 paper filings and RobotaxiTracker counts 105 Cybercabs in unsupervised service. Earnings on October 21 force Tesla to define the fleet, and NHTSA's sworn answers are due October 30.
