# Tesla will end Cybertruck production in mid-2027 to make room for Cybercab at Giga Texas

> Musk confirmed the wind-down on Friday: the stainless pickup dies at mid-2027 and its floor goes to Cybercab output, while the Texas plant runs around the clock and the robotaxi's federal safety file stays sealed.

## The stainless truck gets its date

[Elon Musk](https://theinference.org/markets/people/elon-musk) posted on X on Friday that [Tesla](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/tesla) will [wind down Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of 2027](https://www.theverge.com/transportation/1028542/tesla-cybertruck-winding-down-production-2027), "to make room for increased Cybercab production," the two-seat robotaxi the company assembles at the same plant [1]. Giga Texas is the only plant that builds the pickup, and its specialized tooling does not move cheaply [1]. The truck unveiled in 2019 with a 250,000-a-year promise, on sale since late 2023, is being retired before its fourth year [2].

## The arithmetic that killed it

The gap is the story. At Tesla's May 2023 shareholder meeting, Musk estimated the company could eventually sell 250,000 to 500,000 trucks a year [4]. Analyst estimates put total deliveries since the launch at roughly 70,000 [1]. Cox Automotive counted [4,323 Cybertruck sales in the third quarter](https://insideevs.com/news/814618/tesla-cybertruck-production-ending-official/) and 11,586 from January through September [2]. Annualized, that is a run rate near 15,000 to 17,000 trucks a year, a fraction of the promise [2]. Ford already ran this experiment with the F-150 Lightning and buried it last year [2].

*Chart: **The 250,000-a-year promise against the truck's 2026 run rate** Bar chart comparing Musk's promised 250,000 Cybertrucks per year with the 2026 sales pace annualized to roughly 15,400 trucks a year from the January through September figure and about 17,300 from the third-quarter figure.*

*Trucks per year. Promise per Musk at Tesla's May 2023 shareholder meeting [4]. The 2026 bars annualize Cox Automotive sales figures: 11,586 units January through September (12-month equivalent of about 15,400) and 4,323 in the third quarter (about 17,300). Both 2026 bars are estimates. Total deliveries since 2023, roughly 70,000, are analyst estimates [1]; Tesla does not break out the model [2]. [4][2][1]*

## The plant converts at full speed

The floor the pickup vacates will not sit idle. Giga Texas has added a night shift, running two 12-hour shifts and [skipping its usual Thanksgiving and Christmas shutdowns through year-end](https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-giga-texas-reportedly-moves-24-7-production/), per the plant's most reliable independent tracker, Joe Tegtmeyer [3]. Tesla has not confirmed the shift change or which lines get the extra output [3]. The timing is clean: the pickup's floor space converts to robotaxi output at maximum intensity, right as the autonomy thesis carries the stock.

## The sealed file next door

Tesla shares fell 10.77% on Thursday to close at $343.69, down from $385.19 and 31.1% below the 52-week high of $498.83 [5]. The disclosures behind the drop: the company [asked federal regulators to keep its sworn Cybercab compliance answers entirely confidential](https://news.jkn.co.kr/editions/english/post/1073356), in a one-page letter dated October 30 that called the file confidential business information [5]. The wind-down is confirmation data for the robotaxi bet and a demand datapoint against the top of Tesla's consumer lineup, all at once.

## The defense of the truck

Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill called it "an incredible technology development platform" that "[lives on through Cybercab](https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/musk-says-tesla-will-wind-down-cybertruck-production-next-year/ar-AA2gRSR9)" [4]. Fair: the truck brought steer-by-wire and a 48-volt architecture to the market, and Tesla raised prices twice since August rather than discount, with the Premium AWD now at $92,490 and the Cyberbeast at $102,490 [2]. But the entry Dual-Motor trim is already gone from the order page [2], and Tesla is discounting used units as sales fall [2]. The owners paid the sticker. The shareholders now fund the pivot.

## What to watch

The federal safety docket on the Cybercab is the tell: whether NHTSA rules Tesla's sealed answers complete, with civil penalties of up to $139 million in play [5]. The night shift at Giga Texas keeps rolling in the meantime, most likely feeding the Model Y backlog while the robotaxi line grows [3]. The floor space and the capital are already committed to Cybercab; owners and shareholders learned about it from an X post, and the regulator's ruling on that sealed file comes next.

## Takeaway

Musk confirmed the Cybertruck dies at mid-2027: 250,000 a year promised, about 15,000 selling, and its Giga Texas floor goes to Cybercab while NHTSA weighs Tesla's sealed safety file.
