# The Navy pays about $450,000 a round for Castelion's hypersonic missile against a $13 billion mark

> The Navy's top officer inspected Castelion's Blackbeard at Patuxent River on October 28. The order trail under that visit, up to $200 million for 444 rounds, is the demand a $13 billion private valuation is underwriting.

## The Navy's top officer came to see it

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle examined Blackbeard, an air-launched missile built to fly above five times the speed of sound and maneuver inside the atmosphere, at Naval Air Station Patuxent River on October 28, at the squadron that flight-tests weapons for Navy fighters [1]. [Castelion](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/castelion), a Torrance, California startup founded in 2022 by three former [SpaceX](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/spacex) executives, greeted the visit with two words: "meet Blackbeard" [4]. A Super Hornet first carried two of the missiles on [a developmental flight on September 18](https://news.usni.org/2026/10/07/super-hornets-sortie-with-blackbeard-missiles-in-latest-test); the Navy wants four per jet [2][3].

## The order trail behind the visit

Awards have climbed all year: a $50 million prototype order in February, per Defense Department contract notices, $105 million in April to finish Super Hornet integration, 50 pre-production rounds for $23.4 million in June, and up to $200 million for 444 missiles in September [5][3][2].

That works out to about $468,000 a round in June and roughly $450,000 in September, arithmetic on the order values rather than a published unit price; [company documents put the build cost below $500,000](https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/the-13-billion-startup-racing-to-close-america-s-hypersonic-gap/ar-AA2gtz67) [7]. A Mach 5 missile at that price costs the Navy less than a Tomahawk cruise missile, at millions apiece [7]. Above the orders, [a Department of War framework sets a minimum of 500 Blackbeards a year](https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/general/pentagon-signed-a-deal-to-buy-at-least-500-castelion-blackbeard-hypersonic-missiles-a-year-with-plans-for-12-000-over-five-years/ar-AA23hKBd) once testing completes and seeks funding for more than 12,000 over five years [4].

## A $13 billion mark on a $500 million book

[The August Series C raised $1 billion](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/20/castelion-hits-13b-valuation-to-mass-produce-hypersonic-missiles/), $800 million of equity plus a $250 million revolving credit line, at a $13 billion valuation, co-led by Andreessen Horowitz, Carlyle and [JPMorgan Chase](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/jpmorgan-chase) [6]. The disclosed contract book beneath it: more than $500 million [6].

Headcount has grown from 159 at the end of 2025 past 400, and Project Ranger, the 1,000-acre plant in Rio Rancho, New Mexico meant to turn out thousands of missiles a year, has not opened [7]. The verified floor of the multiyear plan is 1,000 rounds over two years; the road to 12,000 runs through contract options and congressional appropriations [5].

## Lockheed's delay opened the door

The Army said on October 14 that Dark Eagle, [Lockheed Martin](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/lockheed-martin)'s hypersonic system in work since 2017, is [still not fully fielded, more than three years past plan](https://www.msn.com/en-us/technology/aviation/army-s-dark-eagle-hypersonic-weapon-is-not-fully-deployed-three-years-late/ar-AA2fz0f6) [8]. The Army's answer: Dark Eagle deployed for Indo-Pacific exercises and has passed multiple flight tests, and the Pentagon says it needs both premium and low-cost hypersonics, leaving Lockheed the high end [7]. The Inference has covered the collision, from the [Army fly-off](https://theinference.org/article/the-army-s-five-way-missile-fly-off-pits-13-billion-castelion-against-lockheed-and-rtx-for-a-1-000-km-round) pitting Castelion against Lockheed and RTX to [JPMorgan's defense bets](https://theinference.org/article/jpmorgan-put-5-billion-into-defense-startups-and-one-castelion-is-challenging-lockheed-s-missile) [7].

## What moves the number next

On October 26, Castelion announced [a contract modification under existing Air Force Research Laboratory work](https://www.armyrecognition.com/news/aerospace-news/2026/u-s-air-force-expands-f-16-long-range-strike-potential-with-castelion-blackbeard-hypersonic-missile) to start integrating Blackbeard with the F-16; value and schedule were not disclosed [9][10]. The Navy has not dated the first live launch from a Super Hornet [4]. Three readings move a $13 billion mark: the F-16 contract's value, Project Ranger's opening day, and the first live fire [4].

## Takeaway

The Navy's climbing Blackbeard order book, about $450,000 a round, is the demand a $13 billion valuation rests on; the 12,000-round plan still runs through options and appropriations.
