# The Pentagon has laser money to spend; nLIGHT is waiting on Chinese optics

> nLIGHT reports on Thursday, November 5 with a record defense quarter behind it and about $17 million of shipments pushed out by late Chinese optics. The print tests whether the Pentagon's laser ramp can outrun its supply chain.

The Pentagon has moved laser weapons from experiment to production budget, and [nLIGHT](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nlight)'s [results on Thursday, November 5](https://news.futunn.com/en/post/1000894265/press-release-nlight-to-announce-third-quarter-2026-financial-results) will show whether the factory that makes the light can keep pace [1][2]. The Camas, Washington laser maker posted record second-quarter revenue of $82.6 million, with aerospace and defense at a record $57.3 million [2].

It then [guided the third quarter down to a range of $63 million to $73 million](https://seekingalpha.com/news/4628833-nlight-forecasts-q3-2026-revenue-of-63m-73m-as-17m-of-product-shipments-shift-amid-china), because Chinese suppliers, mostly optics makers, are late on parts [2]. About $17 million of product revenue due this quarter slipped into later periods, roughly a quarter of the guided quarter [2]. Demand is not the open question anymore. Supply is.

## The buyers moved from prototype to production money

The demand link in this chain is closed. In September the US Army awarded [AeroVironment](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/aerovironment), the defense prime, $464.8 million to produce its LOCUST X3 laser under the Enduring-High Energy Laser program, [the first directed-energy production contract in American history](https://theinference.org/article/the-army-s-first-production-laser-pays-aerovironment-464-8-million-and-keeps-the-profit-contestable) [3]. The 30-kilowatt system's first units are expected in operation by early 2028, tracking and engaging drones with AeroVironment's Halo Pinpoint AI [4].

The company puts the cost of each engagement below $10, which is the economics that turned prototypes into a procurement line [4]. nLIGHT sits inside the Pentagon's bigger laser bet as well: its HADES platform won [the Joint Laser Weapon System program](https://theinference.org/article/pentagon-puts-44-million-on-contract-with-nlight-under-a-627-million-laser-ceiling), [a $627 million ceiling on a $44 million initial award](https://investors.nlight.net/news-releases/news-details/2026/nLIGHT-Awarded-627-Million-Joint-Laser-Weapon-System-JLWS-Contract/default.aspx) [5].

*Chart: **The Pentagon put $1.09 billion behind laser weapons in two 2026 awards** Bar chart of three 2026 directed-energy award values in US dollar millions: the Joint Laser Weapon System ceiling at 627, the Army's E-HEL award to AeroVironment for the LOCUST X3 at 464.8, and the JLWS initial funded award at 44.*

*US dollar millions. nLIGHT's Joint Laser Weapon System award of July 2026 carries a $627 million ceiling on a $44 million initial award [5]; the Army's Enduring-High Energy Laser award to AeroVironment for the LOCUST X3 in September 2026 is worth $464.8 million [3][4]. Management said initial funded work starts contributing revenue this quarter and ramps in 2027, and its separate HELSI 2 contract delivers a one-megawatt laser late this year [2]. Chief executive Scott Keeney expects the technology to scale to that megawatt class, a level the Navy has also discussed [4].

## The bottleneck moved to the factory floor

The weak link in nLIGHT's own arithmetic is the input. Chief financial officer Joseph Corso said the Chinese delays "primarily affect our commercial products" and that fourth-quarter execution on the backlog is "a little bit of a question mark" [2]. Some defense products use commercial components, so the exposure is small but real [6]. Management is qualifying new suppliers and redesigning products around the missing optics [2].

The Army pays, AeroVironment books the prime contract, and nLIGHT carries the factory risk on the input both programs wait on [2][3]. The capability exists, the buyer exists, and what stands between is requalification and shipment timing.

*Chart: **Q2 revenue hit a record $82.6M; the third-quarter guide sits below it** Column chart of nLIGHT quarterly revenue from Q1 2024 through Q2 2026 in USD millions, rising to a record 82.59 in Q2 2026; the third-quarter guidance range of 63 to 73 million is not plotted and is stated in the caption.*

*nLIGHT quarterly revenue, USD millions, from its SEC filings [8]. The second quarter of 2026 was the record; management's third-quarter guidance of $63 million to $73 million [2] sits below it, and that guided range is not drawn here. [8][2]*

## What the November 5 print has to answer

The market has priced the doubt. LASR closed October 30 at $37.13 [7]. Its 52-week high is $86.95 [7], and the shares carried a market capitalization near $2.1 billion at late October pricing [7]. Polen Capital, which owns the stock, named the guidance shortfall as the driver of its quarter's underperformance and is still watching the defense position [7].

The print answers three things: whether the $17 million shows up in the fourth quarter or becomes a hole; how much of the revenue base is defense; and whether JLWS converts funded work into booked revenue, since a ceiling is potential funding, not backlog, and management does not expect a JLWS program of record within a year [2].

## One factory, one queue in China

A laser is only a weapon on the day its parts arrive, and nLIGHT owns that day in both programs, as the prime on JLWS and the light source behind the Army's buy [2][5]. The trade from here is not about whether the Pentagon buys lasers; it is about whether one factory in Camas, Washington can get its optics out of a queue in China. On Thursday, November 5, the print says how well that middle is going [2][5].

## Takeaway

The Pentagon's laser ramp is funded; the open question is whether nLIGHT's Camas factory gets its optics out of the Chinese queue, with $17 million of shipments pushed into later quarters.
