# Two PS6 parts now cost more than a whole PS5, by one leaker's count

> Sony says it will not absorb the memory cost spike or sell its next console at a significant loss, and it has set neither a price nor a date. The memory makers selling to AI datacenters have no reason to blink, and the buyers Ampere Analysis says stay home at $1,000 are the install base.

[Sony](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/sony) has not announced the PlayStation 6, a launch date or a price, and Chief Executive [Hiroki Totoki](https://theinference.org/markets/people/hiroki-totoki) has said why. "We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console or at what prices," he told investors, in remarks reported by the Wall Street Journal. [At a June 5 investor meeting](https://rollingout.com/2026/10/17/ps6-price-sony-memory-costs-1000/), Sony added that absorbing all component cost increases is "not realistic," that it does not intend to sell hardware at significant losses, and that memory prices should stay very high through its fiscal 2027 [1][5].

## The chips went to the datacenters first

The other side of that trade has no reason to blink. Samsung, [SK hynix](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/sk-hynix) and [Micron](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/micron) hold roughly 95% of the DRAM market and have reportedly [sold their 2026 high-bandwidth memory output to AI datacenter buyers months ahead](https://theinference.org/article/bull-builds-europe-s-supercomputers-at-home-then-pays-samsung-sk-hynix-and-micron-for-the-memory); TrendForce puts AI workloads in line for about 20% of global DRAM wafer capacity this year [4][8]. Bernstein measured [contract memory prices up nearly 20% quarter over quarter in Q3 2026, with another rise expected in Q4](https://shattered.io/memory-chip-shortage-pc-prices-up-17-percent-2026/) [4]. [Gartner](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/gartner) now counts memory as 23% of a PC's bill of materials, up from 16% in 2025, and [Q3 PC shipments fell 22.4% year over year to 55.4 million units](https://www.itvoice.in/gartner-says-worldwide-pc-shipments-declined-22-4-in-third-quarter-of-2026-as-component-cost-inflation-raised-asps) [4][6].

## The subsidy math stopped working

PlayStation was built on the opposite model: lose $100 to $200 on the box, then collect software and services revenue on the install base [1]. For the PS6, hardware leaker KeplerL2 prices the expected GDDR7 graphics memory at roughly $20 to $23 per gigabyte, against about $3 when the console's silicon was being planned, and counts [RAM and storage alone at more than $680 a unit](https://www.techpowerup.com/353834/ps6-ram-and-storage-alone-reportedly-cost-sony-over-usd-680-claims-leaker), above the $649.99 sticker on a whole PS5 [2][3]. His full parts estimate, the bill of materials before assembly, shipping and retail margin, climbed from about $760 in March to about $960 in late June, and implies a $1,100 to $1,200 launch price if Sony refuses any loss [1][5].

## The install base is the asset at risk

[Ampere Analysis estimated in August](https://finance.yahoo.com/media-advertising/articles/1-000-ps6-xbox-helix-174819299.html) that $1,000 consoles launching in 2028 would leave combined PS6 and [Microsoft](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/microsoft)'s next Xbox, code-named Helix, as much as 38% lower in sales over five years, and the console games and services market $3.4 billion smaller by 2031 than in a $700-launch scenario [1][7]. Every wafer the memory makers commit to a datacenter is a wafer that never becomes a PlayStation.

## The caveats, and the exits

These are unverified leak figures, not Sony numbers, and a parts estimate is not a retail price; console makers buy components well below retail, and "significant" leaves room for small losses, a delay or a cheaper design [1][3][5]. Ampere's own exits are to push the generation past 2028, subsidize deeper through subscription financing, or build a less conventional box [7]. Microsoft's Xbox chief [Asha Sharma](https://theinference.org/markets/people/asha-sharma) said in June it is "hard to imagine that mass audiences can afford thousands of dollars" for a console generation [7].

## What decides it

Two readings settle the direction: [Bernstein's Q4 memory contract print, expected up again](https://theinference.org/article/barclays-cuts-dell-hpe-and-netapp-calling-the-ai-hardware-boom-a-memory-price-cycle), and Totoki's fiscal 2027 window, the stretch he says memory stays very high [1][4]. The undecided number on the PS6 is a question about who funds the install base, Sony's hardware margin or the buyers Ampere says stay home at $1,000 [6][7].

## Takeaway

Leaked PS6 parts estimates put RAM and storage alone above $680, more than a whole PS5, and Sony says it will not sell the console at a significant loss, so the launch price, timing or both stay undecided while memory costs rise.
