# Verisk's fastest organic growth of the year, 7.4%, as a top-five retailer left in-house AI for Verisk

> A top-five US retailer ran AI on its own fraud data, found the lift worse than Verisk's industry-wide datasets, and re-signed a multi-year contract. The data vendor the market wrote off as AI-obsolete just posted its fastest organic growth of the year, with one caveat: cash.

The most-cited argument of 2026 says artificial intelligence makes data middlemen obsolete: why buy someone else's data when your own, run through a model, will do [1][7]? On November 5, [Verisk Analytics](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/verisk-analytics), the data and analytics provider to the insurance industry, put that theory to a live test and it lost [1][7].

CEO [Lee Shavel](https://theinference.org/markets/people/lee-shavel) [told analysts](https://stockanalysis.com/stocks/vrsk/transcripts/718291-q3-2026/) a self-insured top-five US retailer had moved workers' compensation claims management in-house, expecting AI to do the work. It found the lift on its own internal datasets "was not as good and as impactful" as on Verisk's industry-wide data, returned to the company's Anti-Fraud Analytics solution, and [signed a large multi-year agreement](https://www.bullished.co/verisk-ceo-says-a-top-five-retailer-tried-ai-on-fraud-itself-then-signed-a-multi-year-deal-916d5598/) [1][7].

Shavel explained the why: Verisk's data is broader and better integrated, organized with a semantic layer and MCP connectors that let AI use it efficiently, and if a model works on that industry-wide set, it works for every client [7].

## The moat grew while the market priced it away

The evidence in the quarter backs the retailer's retreat. Subscription revenue, 84% of the total, grew 8.2% organically; overall organic constant-currency growth hit 7.4% and adjusted EPS rose 14% to $1.96, [beating the $1.92 consensus](https://www.tradingview.com/news/zacks:2e9cf1822094b:0-verisk-analytics-q3-earnings-beat-estimates-revenues-jump-5-y-y/) [2][4].

The data assets themselves are compounding. The fraud-detection image library passed 800 million images, up from 600 million in March, and the excess-and-surplus dataset doubled to $36 billion of premium from 21 contributors since July [7]. The stock closed November 5 at $211.47, up 6.88%, and [Jefferies](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/jefferies) [lifted its target to $245 from $235](https://rallies.ai/news/verisk-analytics-jefferies-raises-target-price-to-245-from-235-2fb9e8e61f11b429) the next day [7][6].

*Chart: **Q3 2026: growth and EPS up sharply, cash flow down 40.5%** Bar chart of year-over-year percent change for Q3 2026: adjusted EPS +14.0, subscription OCC +8.2, organic revenue +7.4, transactional OCC +3.2, free cash flow -40.5*

*Q3 2026: growth and EPS up sharply, cash flow down 40.5% [2][3]*

## The counterpoint is cash, not competition

The caveat sits in the same filing. [Free cash flow fell 40.5% to $200 million](https://www.stocktitan.net/sec-filings/VRSK/8-k-verisk-analytics-inc-reports-material-event-0d63b72eb3b5.html) on collection timing and higher interest and tax payments, and net income slipped 2.8% [3]. CFO [Elizabeth Mann](https://theinference.org/markets/people/elizabeth-mann) steered full-year results [toward the midpoint of the $7.45 to $7.75 adjusted EPS range](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/verisk-analytics-inc-vrsk-q3-231754056.html) on elongated enterprise-AI sales cycles; that midpoint, $7.60, sits below the $7.71 consensus [2][4]. Verisk monetizes its Claude, [Microsoft](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/microsoft) and [Amazon](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/amazon) connectors only through price increases for now, reserving the right to bill separately later [7].

The December review of Verisk's agentic-AI partnership with a specialty insurer is the next checkpoint [1][7]. One retailer's failed experiment does not settle build-versus-buy, but it points to where the lift comes from: broad industry-wide datasets, not private data alone, are what make AI fraud models work, and that is why the client re-signed.

## Takeaway

A top-five retailer's return from in-house AI to Verisk's fraud data anchors the fastest organic growth of Verisk's year, but free cash flow fell 40.5% and guidance sits below consensus.
