# Volta sold a $5 billion AI loan at 95 cents as CoreWeave and Oracle default insurance hits records

> AI-cloud startup Volta sold its $5 billion loan on October 15, 2026, at 95 cents on the dollar and a yield above 11%, below the terms JPMorgan and Goldman pitched a week earlier. The buyers who forced the discount did so as CoreWeave's default insurance crossed the distress line and Oracle's hit a record.

## A debut borrower pays the market's new price

Volta Infrastructure Holdings, an AI cloud startup founded this year by two former Brookfield infrastructure executives, [sold its $5 billion leveraged loan on October 15, 2026](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/options/articles/jpmorgan-goldman-boost-yield-volta-232556640.html), at 6.5 percentage points over the benchmark rate and 95 cents on the dollar [1]. The yield runs past 11%, rivaling the highest borrowing cost paid anywhere in the AI buildout [1]. JPMorgan and [Goldman Sachs](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/goldman-sachs) had pitched 97 to 98 cents a week earlier [1]. Buyers also took a penalty if Volta repays the debt early, and a rate that steps up if the company is ever rated [1].

## What the holdouts won

The holdouts were managers of collateralized loan obligations, the biggest buyers of leveraged loans, and [unrated paper](https://theinference.org/article/moody-s-stamps-926-million-of-neocloud-gpus-investment-grade-and-the-shorts-are-not-buying-it) normally locks them out of a deal entirely [1][3]. The final structure shows who kept the risk: [the banks underwrote only the $1.3 billion term loan behind the Bitdeer data-center lease](https://seekingalpha.com/news/4652223-jpmorgan-goldman-sachs-tread-carefully-in-5b-volta-ai-loan-offering---report), leaving the $3.7 billion chip loan, which buys about 36,000 [Nvidia](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/nvidia) GPUs, with investors [2]. [Anthropic](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/anthropic), the AI lab, has signed a six-year compute agreement at the Norway site [1]. Volta's equity cushion is $300 million against $5 billion of debt, [first shopped in August at roughly 500 basis points over the benchmark](https://cryptobriefing.com/jpmorgan-goldman-volta-5b-ai-loan/) [4].

## The price list behind the repricing

Companies have borrowed about $625 billion for data centers and AI in two years, and credit markets now price doubt on it to the basis point [3]. [CoreWeave](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/coreweave), the listed neocloud that rents out GPU computing power, carries more than $51 billion of debt and obligations; [its five-year credit default swaps, insurance against default, peaked above 1,140 basis points on October 15](https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/coreweave-credit-default-swaps-hit-distress-levels-as-investors-sour-on-ai-debt/ar-AA2ejDri) and settled near 1,038, up 164% in a year [5]. [Anything above 1,000 reads as distress](https://theinference.org/article/legrand-promised-50-more-ai-tokens-per-watt-data-center-debt-just-went-distressed) [5]. [Oracle](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/oracle)'s insurance hit a record 288 basis points, SoftBank's 424 [6]. CoreWeave's own filings explain the flinch: second-quarter revenue of $2.58 billion against capital spending of $6.42 billion [7].

*Chart: **Default insurance on CoreWeave runs about four times Oracle's record spread** Bar chart of five-year credit default swap spreads: Oracle at 288 basis points, SoftBank at 424, CoreWeave near 1,038*

*Five-year credit default swap spreads in basis points, the annual cost per $100 of debt insured. Oracle and SoftBank as of October 15, 2026, per S&P Global Market Intelligence and LSEG data; CoreWeave last near 1,038 after peaking above 1,140 that day. [5][6]*

*Chart: **CoreWeave's capital spending has topped its revenue every quarter since early 2024** Line chart of CoreWeave quarterly revenue and capital expenditure from Q1 2024 to Q2 2026, capex above revenue in every quarter*

*Quarterly revenue and capital expenditures in billions of dollars, from CoreWeave's SEC filings. Capital spending has exceeded revenue in every quarter since Q1 2024; the company's Q2 2026 free cash flow worked out to about minus $5.7 billion. [7]*

## The revenue math, and what to watch

CoreWeave chief executive Mike Intrator calls the selloff irrational, citing a backlog above $100 billion, about two-thirds of it with investment-grade customers such as [Microsoft](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/microsoft) and [Meta](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/meta) [5]. [Gartner](https://theinference.org/markets/companies/gartner)'s arithmetic sits on the other side: data-center owners need $8.5 trillion of cumulative revenue through 2030 to cover capital spending, financing and a 12% return, against at most $3.6 trillion the firm forecasts, [leaving more than $3.5 trillion exposed to write-downs](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/ai-race-puts-3-5-083625846.html) [8][9]. Volta just paid 11 percent for money, and every neocloud that follows will likely be marked off that print. Watch the ratings step-up trigger, and whether the next GPU-backed loan prices better than 95.

## Takeaway

Volta's $5 billion loan sold at 95 cents and an 11%-plus yield after CLO holdouts forced better terms, as default insurance on CoreWeave crossed the 1,000-basis-point distress line and Oracle's hit a record.
